Like many facets of life, video games are not the place to learn about sexuality. Games offer an escape from reality, while the real world is the place where people should make their decisions about stuff.

Also, given the stereotypical demographic, its isn't the best interest of game companies to pander to the gay community. What tiny fraction of gamers are actually homosexual anyway? Also: why does it matter? Sexual preferences of the protagonist don't matter in most situations.

No, ignorant people in ignorant settings cause ignorance.
Someone give him a cookie he has earned it.
I have to ask this seeing as how the internet cannot properly show sarcasm. Are you being sarcastic?
NO no i seriously agree with your point LOL I really like the idea that if the environment is full of open minded people then ignorance cant be introduced no matter how.

There's barely any non white male lead characters, I think homosexuality is pretty far down on the list of barriers to break in terms of popular lead characters.

On the other hand, you can just pretend every man in a Final Fantasy game is gay. They sure look like it.

Lol, but that send the wrong message, because not all gay people look like that......

????

the point of VIDEO GAMES is to entertain... not "teach values" to people, it is silly to assume that people will think "if it is not in a video game, it doesn´t exist"

you are talking about things that have Aliens and GIANT WORMS and SPARTANS and HALOS and SPORES and ZOMBIES

how could someone believe there are no gay people in the real world just from the video games???

so does that mean people will believe there are "everything stated before" in real life!?!?

Yea, I guess that's true, but when kids are playing games like InFamous and stuff like that ( I mean like 8 or 9 or younger by the way), they will pick stuff up and then think that being gay is a bad thing..... And just to put this out there so no one asks, I'm not gay, 100% straight..
does the game inFAMOUS make you kill a gay person??

no seriously, i have never played that game

if it does, well, sucks to be the dev team, they are going to burn in media

if it doen´t then what could posibly make the kids think that gay people are bad!?!? they are not even mentioned!! "Ignored" is much better than "Praised" or "Killed" why?? because it makes people form their oun ideas, you cant think "haha i killed the gay man" if it is not even mentioned that he is gay so you cant think it´s ok to kill gay people, you kill a bad guy and think "haha, i killed the bad guy"

ignoring an issue in the video games, movies and books one makes is the best way not to impose your way of thinking into others and allow them to make their own mind.

I agree with you that there is a definite lack of homosexual characters in games. Its probably because it may be hardrer for most gamers to identify with a charcter who is so different from them. About the only time you see or hear about homosexuality in games, aside from a select few games, is when idiots throw out slurs like they're candy when playing mulitplayer, especially halo. However, if kids are learning about the real world primarily through games, there is no hope for them anyways.

PS, this my first ever post, How'd I do?

I find it easy to identify with a mute twelve (more often than not) year old who wears a green outfit and nightcap who kills everything that is not humanoid or immediately talkative, enjoys sailing, horse riding, archery and even dables in explosives.

Shaping views? Nah, there's hardly any homosexuals in gaming. Sex is a lesson for another media, leave games out of it. Personally I've not really met many gay folks. Or rather, I probably have but they are not the glaring stereotypes that TV, film and everything that ISN'T gaming portray.

Jullian Clairy = Stereotype
Paul O' Grady = Perfectly normal and cool guy who simply has a different preference.

To the utterly uniformed (me) what is the norm among homosexuals? Do they all immediately become camp, high voiced fashionistas, or *shock* *horror* has TV LIED TO US?!

I think there could be many successful homosexual characters in video games.. we just don't know. it isn't like everyone who's gay has a g floating over their head.

Who knows... G-Man could be homosexual... there's a g in his name.
Master Chief could be too!

On topic though, people aren't so shallow that video games influence them about such things.

Allot of gay topics now days... any way i remember this JRPG with this REALLY REALLY gay character, it was embarrassing to me as a gay male but to other guys it was HILARIOUS. I just think it is sort of a mockery. EXCEPT FOR LESBIANS let me tell you i bet after banging the blue chick on mass effect people where much more accepting to lesbians. Seriously >.>
are you talking about Makoto from Enchanted Arms?
cause if you are-- LMAO I AGREEEE!
being a gay, i had the same reaction of embarrassment and amusement.
but i eventually switched the language to japanese cause for some reason his voice was more bearable.

but i hear that a man on man relationship will be allowed in mass effect 2..!
cause i was pissed off when i figured out that mr. shepard's relationship will kaidan wouldn't be going anywhere.
