Poll: Do you think you're more intelligent than the average person? (Be honest)

There are so many people in Africa, South America, and other areas who have zero education, farm for a living (and while this may not be inherent of unintelligence, strongly correlates to it for lack of education) and they outnumber the educated population. I'd hope that everyone on this site for the most part is on the over.

Average compared to what? The rest of the United States? I'm probably above average.

But compared to people whose prerogative it is to obsessively catalogue and sort through vast amounts of information, programming computers, memorizing fictional lore, pouring countless hours into purely intellectual activities? You know, people who tend to go to sites like the Escapist and XKCD and things like that?

I go through moods. Sometimes I think I'm absolutely stupid, but most of the time I think I'm above average. I was even put into a special school program for gifted students.

Well I score pretty high on standardized tests, am good at every subject, and can out argue most people. I would say above average. On the other hand I am often too stupid to do something that I know is good for me. Or maybe that is just a lack of willpower. Eh, either way I still would say I am probably above average, even if for no other reason than the average seems to be pretty bad.

You too huh? I guess I'm above average but I just don't know considering my little life experience I have enough to measure my intelligence against all that many people. Praise from others with self doubt doesn't help me either concerning intelligence.

Well I'm about to graduate a Bachelor in Business with an IT major, getting between credit and distinction on average without much study, between D and HD in the IT units, and getting multiple awards in the process. I'm now in the process of starting a PC repair (and sales, in future) business, turning what was essentially a 30+ year old severely termite damaged shed into a fully furnished office with plenty of Ethernet and power sockets despite no formal carpentry, construction or electrician training. I assume that makes me qualify as above average.

...I feel I should also mention that I consider myself socially retarded. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Seriously though, my 2 closest friends are vastly more intelligent then me (and way above average in my opinion) and are very humble about it. Though I do find myself looking at things and going "Fuck, what is wrong with everyone?", I try not to get egotistical about it. I have my moments of very sobering stupidity and my friends are good for perspective.

Ego has a place, it's just not very useful when I'm sitting in my room with no job and no prospects.

Depends on what you mean by average. If you are averaging it out as the median, I would say I'm below average. If you are calculating the mean I'd say I'm above since there are so many stupid people they drag down the bar. If you think a lot of escapist are lying, they're not. The Escapist community seems to have an above average IQ. Go on youtube or facebook and read some comments. That's what the average is.

I know some of the likes are laughing at it, but there are probably just as many serious ones too.

Yeah, but they might actually be retarded.

Honestly though, people can surprise you. There is no minimum requirement in grammar or biology for someone to excel elsewhere in life. A person who can't grasp maths or science, might shine in abstract thought and creative expression... which is another side to intelligence.

I'm making a great living as a programmer, so I guess that means I'm above average intelligence...

However, there's lots of different types of intelligence and there are many situations in life where I can appear borderline retarded and do completely stupid things out of a lack of common sense.

Well, there comes an inherent flaw here of what is intelligence?
Dependent on who you ask, it can come in almost any form, and there is no true way to measure it.
Even then, there is not enough data to compare to the rest of the world to see if I am above average.

When i was younger (Years 3-7 in school) I thought i was pretty above average. And i was. Higher distinctions in the optional exams/tests that i took. It was good.

Now, i'm in year 12, and i feel... dumb....

So now, i'd say, just a bit below average

I was identified as gifted in grade one, and I taught myself to read before I even started school. I'd say I'm well above average.

I suppose I consider myself above average, but not by much. I don't think I am even close to a genius or anything. I am smart (I have to be, considering what I am studying and the field I want to enter), but not incredibly so.

I feel this poll should have had a middle option 'I'm just average' so its not 'Hey I'm really great' or 'Hey I'm really self deprecating' honestly I don't know having never taken an IQ test or anything like that. Plus you can very knowledgeable about one topic but not another, so it's really hard to say what an average would be, for example I know quite a bit about video games but almost nothing about history.
