Well, I agree with everything I say and think. Therefore, I'm a genius.

I don't really know. I would like to think I'm more intelligent, but so does everybody else.

I was in the gifted program in most of my schools, frequently also on the academic team or in debate club as well. I pick up concepts quickly, and am generally good at anything I put my mind to. I have no problem believing I am smarter than average.

Me ? I'm thick. I know a LOT of stuff, but its almost all things i was taught, I probably wouldn't have been able to work the majority of them out by myself. Why exactly does E=mc squared, (see i don't even know how to put a little number two above and to the right of the c ) I can't even remember if its supposed to be a subscript or a superscript so einstein can go self harm for all i care... oh wait its superscript because its above isn't it...

Yeah i'll stick with I'm dumb

I am knowledgeable in my areas of interest in study, but take me outside of my places of interest and I consider myself pretty useless. I can pick things up reasonably fast, I think very fast if I'm interested, but my problem is I'm very picky.

I'd say I'm below average intelligent in that way. I can formulate a good argument, read people pretty well, and I know a lot about animals - take me outside of those areas and try to ask me what makes a battery work or how to stop my shower leaking and I'll curl into a corner and start screaming for a real man to help.

EDIT - Actually, last time I did an IQ test I scored about average - so I'll go for that. I'm average, just particular. =D

I have no idea.
I think of myself as pretty average not knowing if I'm a bit under or above.
I'll answer as a bit below average since I am pretty sure I am not among the smartest persons.

nope.
I'd say I'm about average. My only difference is I'm curious, and I'm never lazy about something I'm interested in...otherwise, I'm told I'm 'wise'...but I don't understand what defines that.

Am I more intelligent? Definitely.

Am I more capable? More adept at life? A stronger, or better person? Nah.

There's more to life than intelligence. It's extremely overrated.

I'm above average but i'm to apathetic and understimulated to be able to utilize it and slowly but surely over the last half a decade i've noticed a decline in my applied intelligence.

I'm pretty sure though if I spent a month doing brain teasers and sudodu I would polish up a bit and get some of that retaining, problem solving and learning back up to where they use to be. I've still got my intensely analytical mind to maintain good pattern recognition and reasoning and all the other good stuff that comes from observation.

Just a little experiment I thought up. Obviously only 50% of people can be above average in anything. My real goal here is to see just how strongly we are affected by personal bias.
So which 50% do you personally think you fall into, the upper or the lower?
This is for the general population...the escapist could be more intelligent on average or less intelligent on average. It'd be interesting to see what percentages thought they were amongst the intelligent members of this community, and which think they're below the 50% mark.

OT: Probably, but it certainly doesn't feel like it most of the time.

Ok, I've seen and heard this a hundred times and it's pissing me off that no one ever corrects it. That's not average, that's median. Only 50% of people can be above the median. If you have a hypothetical group of 90 people of nearly equal intelligence, then add 10 really stupid ones then 90% of the group will be above average. If you want to split them into the top 50% and the bottom 50% then you'd compare them to the median (which would be in between the 50th and 51st smartest).
This is only true if you assume that average means the arithmetic mean.
In this particular case I meant median. Both are perfectly acceptable methods of measuring the average of a dataset. Sorry about not being perfectly clear on that though.

It's just that unintelligent people are less likely to spend their time answering polls like this, because they wouldn't come to a site like this. So the poll checks out fine I guess.

NO..not at all....however I also know that we tend to overestimate ourselfs..alot

but no.....and how would you measure that?...

years ago I took all kinds of IQ tests onlne..ranging from 99 to 120 so theres really no way of knowing
most online iq tests dont work ive tried 3 first one was 60 second was 150 third 130
exactally..and even more reliable IQ tests..what do they really tell us?

Im a little unsre on the IQ thing..if the average is 100 then does that mean having an IQ of 100 makes you rather dumb? (kind of like gamescores..now a 7/10 is considered terrible?) then again has the average gone up or down?

I also read an article on the Idea of child geniouses...having IQ's of 130+ who got to go to special schools...yet most of them didnt go on to be brilliant minds that changed the world

mabye IQ alone isnt going to spell sucess or failure?...I dont know

This. I think it's entirely feasible that pretty much everyone who would contribute to this website by posting is in the top 50% intelligence wise.

Edit: Read more posts and saw we're going for a range of averages, not above or below a median average person. (So there really should be an average option, but I see the point of that being overwhelmed)

I think I'm above average. I may not have much book learning. I have quite decent common sense. I like to learn new things. If I don't know how to do something I can usually figure it out. I'm pretty good at solving problems. I enjoy reading (granted I'm not sure if that makes me intelligent.) I also think I'm creative.

Really I have no way of telling if I'm above or below average. The only way I could see doing to that is by coming up with a list of questions and asking people to detail what they would do in said situation and comparing my answer with every one (else's I genuinely cant seem to find a word that looks and sounds good here.). Barring that I see no way to actually figuring out if I'm above or below. Frankly that's too much work for me to even think about doing.

I also learn from mistakes, both mine and other peoples. If I see someone do something I'm going to try to do, and fail. I will look at what they did, and either change it so I think it might work or completely avoid it.

Remember that the poll doesn't necessarily give an accurate value for personal bias. It may also be that the Escapist mainly attracts people who are above average, or that below average people aren't voting for some reason. Also, saying that you're doing this to test personal bias is likely to skew results.

I'm above average. At GCSE level I received close to maximum marks in almost every subject without so much as glancing at a textbook to revise. I also beat my entire year group (in the school, not at national level) in an IQ/problem solving test.

My current college grades kind of suck. But that's more because I spend every second of college dying to get home and write music than because the work is particularly difficult. I'm even feeling a lack of motivation in the subjects I usually enjoy. Things have naturally gone downhill.

So overall I'd say I'm above average in everything but don't put the effort in. Also, I suck at team sports.
