You are forgetting that The Escapist is more of an intelligent gathering than the standard affair.
I'm sure IGN is 90% below lol

"I can't help but look at everyone calling themselves above average intelligence and begin to wonder that perhaps average intelligence is higher than they believe it to be, therefore making them average"

I get your point, but then, this isn't 'everyone'. This is just the 500 or so people who voted on the Escapist poll. For all we know, most of these people could very well be more intelligent than the average person...

Technically if you were to line up all 7+ billion people in the world and arrange them from highest IQ to lowest IQ, only one of them could be perfectly in the middle and therefore average. Everyone else is either above or below, even if only slightly.

Besides, declaring oneself average is essentially just a way to avoid the question. If I made it an option most people would choose it just to avoid seeming either stupid or self-rightous.
..or maybe people just feel that they're of generally pretty average intelligence? I know I certainly do.

As for only one being perfectly in the middle or 'average'... I was more referring to a poll option that would be there for those who felt in the 'middle 10%' or so.

So which 50% do you personally think you fall into, the upper or the lower?
I'd say that I'm good at some things and bad at others. I'm not really in a position to make judgements purely on my own intelligence, no one can judge themselves in an objective manner.

For what it's worth, I could come up with fairly convincing arguments suggesting that I'm really smart, or incredibly stupid. I don't know which one is right! :D

As an aside, this poll could have an "average" option too for balance - you might be forcing people who generally consider themselves average to pick a side depending on their current mood!

Technically, there wouldn't necessarily be only one person in the middle, or even anyone at all. It's just an average - there isn't any limit on whether a person actually has that exact IQ. You'd need an IQ test accurate to about 3 decimal places in order for this to be done with any meaning anyway! It gets worse when you remember that intelligence variation is a Gaussian spread from what I remember (meaning that there would a proportionally A LOT of people around the average point).

Well, I'm doing my A-levels, and I choose 3 of the hardest ones (biology, chemistry and physics), and I'm getting B's, so yeah I'd say I'm above average. Even if we're not talking academic knowledge, I still think I know a lot more than your everyday guy.
Word. Same here.

A simple question requires a damn essay. Curse you Biology!

OT: Same as Jack boyo. I'm know more than your average mortal citizen. So yeah, more intelligent than the average person.

I've got no idea. I'm definately getting above average grades (I got the 3rd or 4th best GCSE results in my year, in quite a large school, don't know how I'll do in A levels but I'm guessing I'll do allright.)

But what correlation is there between grades and intelligence? I'm pretty shitty at social interaction. I do stupid things all the time, allthough it's more likely while I'm talking to someone, rather than while I'm doing a maths problem. So yeah I can pass exams. But I don't know how inteligent I am. What does 'intelligent' even mean?

But it's funny how over 90% of the people on here think they're above average. Some of you are probably not, to be honest.

I refuse to vote in the poll, anyway. If I did I think I would put 'above average', but I'm very, very biased.

honestly I think I am, Yes, a lot more intelligent.
In fact I don't think I've ever met anyone as intelligent as me.
But I am also aware that this is probably due to perception bias

Stay classy escapist, stay classy :D

There's also a difference between being smart academically and then actually putting that into real world practice.

I'm not a great academic. I'm actually pretty bad at it, I barely scraped through university, but I loved the practical side of it all, the debates, the conversations, the sharing of ideas.

Just don't ask me to get it down on paper :D

IQ of 148 last time I took the national IQ test, which was a few years ago, so it may of lowered or raised.

Straight A's in my GCSE's pretty much, and A levels. With the exception of a C grade in RE.

I want to either be an architect or work at CERN, I am currently undecided. I have also been accepted to be a student at Cambridge University.

So most things point toward me being intelligent. My downfall is my stubbornness, my arrogance, and i'm very judgmental.

If I have these to options to choose from, I suppose I'll go with Above average. I'm fairly sure my view on my own intelligence is biased, so right now mostly trying to base this on my level of education and my grades. I do not trust National IQ tests, seeing as it last told me that I have an IQ of 140 and I'm pretty damn sure I do NOT deserve such a score.

Are you in AS or A2 right now?
Despite the fact you didn't ask me, I'm in my AS levels!

I'd say I'm intelligent. Not sure if I'm above average or not. Various doctors have told me I have a quick analytical mind. I definitely know people who would seem to be more intelligent than myself though. Beyond that, I do have an alright level of general knowledge, and I like to think I'm one of the more mature people in my age bracket.

Edit: Oh yes, before the government pulled its funding, I was on the British register for gifted and talented children. That said, I did extremely average in my GCSEs (Cs, Bs, and the odd A) due to extreme laziness and a dislike of exams...

On the flipside, I almost published a book.

I'll tell you when I figure out how to get into other peoples' minds. I really couldn't say, I have no idea how smart other people are. I've met some people who come across as ditzy but actually turned out to be rather brilliant (and the opposite), so it's hard to judge.

I don't care what my intelligence tests say, I consider myself a grand idiot and will act as such. However, I consider intellect useless so it isn't a bad thing.

Considering the pool this is being drawn from, the huge differential isn't exactly all that surprising.

Personally, I went with "above average." Probably not that far above, but tests I've taken have consistently placed me firmly above the accepted average from a young age. As for IQ tests? I've taken plenty, mostly due to boredom, and had scoring ranges anywhere from 120 in a more math/pattern-centric test to a 138 in a more language/word/logic oriented test. I suppose the true number may lie somewhere between those two, but is in all likelihood lower than I'd like it to be. :p

Am I above average intelligence. Slightly but I would imagine no more. I got a degree in engineering but it did take work.
Am I "street smart" .... yes. I have a fair bit of cop on and can judge a situation quickly, this I know from experience and how I grew up.
but its like anything else - I am much more intelligent than others in certain areas and completely incompetent in others.

For instance

I did a test to see what you are good at and what you are not a few years ago (cant remember the name). Turns out I am in the top 2% in the country for mechanical reasoning.

I can also get lost going to the shops. I have a very bad sense of direction.

Does this make me an idiot or clever.. both and I think everyone is the same. We all have different areas of expertise.
