Personally, I think that it wouldn't make sense if you didn't try it before buying it, but how do you do it?

It was actually the "Rate the last game you brought" topic that made me think about this, a friend of mine often whines because he usually buys bad games, where as the ones I pick are usually diamonds.

How about a demo? The most obvious of solutions?
I mean, that is the whole point of them after all.

D'oh, I missed that out, thanks for noticing rather then just flaming me on it.

I tend to find demos aren't a fair judgement of the game, and most modern games don't seem to bother with them at all :(

I rent my games from Gamefly; if i like them i keep them. Unless, I know they will be awesome,(Assassins Creed 2, BioShock 2, and Mass Effect 2), then I'll just buy them.

I tend to read reviews on a game before buying. I don't just use the obligatory score though. I've turned down games that got a 9.5 simply because the way they describe it is not to my liking. It usually has a very nice return, because I've only regretted one game purchase since I began buying them with my own money.

I read a variety of user and professional reviews; play the demo if there is one and watch gameplay footage before making a decision.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not *twitches*.
I didn't mean to sound rude if I did, I just thought it was odd that pirating came into someone's head before demo's.

True, not enough games offer them. I think it depends on the game, and what it is your not sure about.

I have found more games that have put me off because of the demo than made me want to buy, so I suppose they've saved me money.

Demos aren't a full representation. Remember all the spore game play movies? All of its biased and the final products in recent years have been tasteless and lacking.

I normaly try a game out before I buy it.
And I hate it, when the game does not make that possible.
Luckly most online games have a trial account to test the game before buying it.
I also play demos if they are available, even if very often they are much to short or badly programmed to get an impression of the game.
There are a few game series (like all games from total war) I can buy without checking first, since I know I like them, but there are to many games who look cool, but aren`t.

I use a combination of reviews, renting, borrowing, demos and the occasional pirating to preview games. I rarely buy anything I haven't tried.

I rarely buy games but if I do then I always make sure that I did my research and played the demo. And these days it gets more and more easy to get into closed betas and to participate in the open beta.

I always read reviews both of buyers on places like Amazon/Play.com and of actual reviewers. If it's an expensive game, I'll also watch some videos on it (I rarely buy games dead on release day because of costs).

If the gameplay looks good, and if customers who talk about similar gaming interests to my own have enjoyed the game, I'll buy it.

I try them before I buy them. Unfortunately, not an option in the polls (I mean, dude, what the fuck?)

If you must know, I rent them.

Sometimes I try them before I get them. More often not, so I usually go by what other people think about a game.

Depends if i know the developer or not and/or am already a HUGE fan of a series or franchise. Even then i'll turn a brief eye towards a random review or two jsut to make sure i'm not completely wasting my money and know what im getting into.
