If a game is just enough awesome from trailers etc I don't bother with demos. But if I'm not 100% sure about a game i usually try to get a demo, if there are none I pirate or don't bother buying it at all.

I'll usually just buy something if it looks interesting or is recommended by a friend. If i'm really worried about it I may wiki it before hand.

-I'll pirate it if it's a game with mixed reviews, so that it can earn my money first before I consider getting it.
-If it's a sequel to a game I've already played I'll trust the developers to not cock it up.
-If it's a game that is made by a developer I trust a lot, I wont bother trying before I buy.
-If it's a game that is really old, I wont bother looking for it in stores and I'll just torrent it.

I do some research if it's interesting, listen to testimonials from friends if they have it, then I buy it. I never try it beforehand. It's worked out very well so far.

I always try them out and read reviews and general opinions. If there is a demo, I'll check out the demo. If there isn't (Far Cry 2) I pirate the game to check it out. Sorry developers, I'm very keen on knowing enough about the game before buying it and I don't have any gamer friends where I life. Gaming isn't a cheap hobby and I buy only 1 game a month max, so I make sure I do my research before buying a game. I'm not so strict on sequels from games I like though. I know I'll get Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect 2, TESV and BioShock 2 without playing any demo or even reading reviews.

Reviews (IGN and Escapist) and nowadays also demos (PS Store is great sometimes).
And yes, I only play on console (PS3).

I research the game from the ground up if there isn't a demo of it. The only games that I regret buying right now are Burnout: Paradise and Bioshock.

Depends, if it's something I don't normally play or a new franchise, I research it and check the Metascores. Furthermore, listening to several podcasts helps with forming a general idea about the quality of a game. But if it's something like Bioshock 2 or Diablo 3, insta-purchase.

A demo can make me buy a game though. Like Red Faction's did recently. Otherwise it would never have shown up on my radar. Mainly because of poor experiences with old iterations.

Other then that, I never try before I buy. Like, in the shop.

I will play a demo if one comes with my gaming magazine, but if there isn't, and I look of the game, I will likely just buy the game and return it if I don't like it.

I'm amazed that you didnt like those games, I mean Burnout ok, because it takes ages to get to new levels. But Bioshock? I cant think of anything that would make me hate it in any way.

The setting and combat - it wasn't my thing.
The setting because of Fallout 3, after a two months of playing that, it got really boring with the 50s theme. I'm going to finish Bioshock one day, but that day is when I finish all the games I have. That's thirteen games away.

I generally download PC games before I buy them. Since they are usually quite expensive ( 50 Euro's ) and most stores have a no-return policy on PC games, I really don't want to risk wasting that amount of money. If a game is good, I'll buy it shortly after I try it. If it doesn't grab my attention, I throw it off my PC and save the money.

Sometimes i do, but far more often i don't. I do read reviews, and specially non-reviewers (players) comments about the game. Thats usually enough for me to get an idea of what the game is about and how it works.

I've rarely been disapointet

I used to, when demos were avaliable to me, now I just have to hit and miss with games sadly...

though I have plenty of friends to ask first, and I usually enjoy what they do.

I normally read a lot of reviews, mainly user ones, then I watch gameplay videos for a while before deciding.
