Not usually but have been getting into it a bit more with dead island. Kinda hard to help people when you can't talk to them.

Sometimes.

Also, how annoying is it when somebody in your game has a full-volume coversation with somebody IRL without muting their mic first? I don't care what you're having for dinner, talk about the game or not at all.

Reminds me of a video..

I use my mic on public servers, but only after i get a bit used to the community, i'm a bit shy.

When I had and used XBL-Gold I did. I liked talking to team members and whatnot but since I dropped back to silver I've retired my mic. The other times I play multiplayer it's split-screen so no mic required.

It depends on the game. I use a mic to communicate with teammates in co-op, or in a team-based game. Other than that, no.

I do, but I found making any noise, cough or sneeze leaves me open for insult and scorn. I would say the mute button and simply not using the damn thing would be the best course of action but If I did that I would of missed out on the rare times I meet some cool and interesting people online, woman and men.

On TF2 it's pretty much necessary, but yeah, I shut it off in public servers...no one is listening. Spiral Knights has a lot of "open mic", and you don't know if you've been muted, so I learned to run tactics without speech after a few tries.

On Team Fortress 2, yes. The people are usually nice, and it can be helpful to tell the medic to uber now, or warn someone of a spy.
