On consoles, sure, I leave it on. I am not too great with an analogue stick when it comes to shooters.

On a PC though, no.

Nope... don't need aim assist...
I have a mouse for precise aiming control...

What do you mean there are joysticks on controllers...?

You mean I can use consoles for more than Smash Brothers and Mario Kart?

Nah, a mouse will do me just fine...

I'm purely a console player and if I have the option, I will turn it off in a heart beat.

It's not some pride thing or anything like that; I just find that it gets me killed as often as it helps me. Before I figured out what was causing it, I would be killed in CoD constantly when facing two people because I would aim at someone, someone else would run across, and my gun would drag towards the person running, causing me to miss both my targets.

Aim assist is nice when you have a clear target who's just standing out in the open waiting for me to shoot but for some reason, the enemy is constantly trying to not get shot. Selfish bastards.

As to how I do, as well as anyone else. I'd say I used to be above average but I've basically stopped playing shooters online like that (got bored with it). When I do go online, I usually have a positive kill/death ratio but I'm not nearly as good as I used to be.

i have played for a long time without aim assist. i learned to shoot with IGI and CS. and nowadays when i play a game with aim assist it just feels wrong and it even hinders my ability to shoot and aim. call of juarez: gunslinger had this and it was really irritating for me. so no aim assist for me

might want to specify if your talking about consoles or pc , aim assist was created for and exists almost exclusively for consoles to help out with the controller issues. it only ever really appears on PC games that are ports, and on the pc its pretty much reviled

What the hell is going on? What's with the whole ignoring actual irrefutable history here?

Erm...we've had that options for ages. Here is 1999

OK, true, that's not the initial version of HL, however, I assure you - the option was there as well. I just couldn't find a screenshot of this screen from the previous version, so I downloaded it on Steam and screencapped that.

You'd notice these are not ports.

In my experience, aim assist destroys my aim more than it helps. I see why it might be useful, but I avoid it if I can.

Nope, on PC it's called aimbot for multi-player games that gets you banned and called many colourful expletives. Console requires it due to the clunky control system. Played some CoD on a friends PS3 once on split screen. Once I got used to not over compensating, the game pretty much plays itself, last time I ever played a console FPS multi-player.

If I'm playing a single player shooter where my goal is just to enjoy myself and get through the campaign, yes. However, only when I'm using a controller, PC ports included.

If I'm using a mouse, no way. Aim assist with a mouse just fucks up my movement.

I recall I made a thread about aim assist a while ago though. It was when Titanfall came out. I asked how people felt competitively on PC using a controller with aim assist. Most people seemed to agree that it did kind of ruin the whole point of competition. That was before I started playing the game so much with a mouse that the muscle memory finally kicked in and I was topping just about any match.

Of course, when I play Battlefield 4 on PS4 I use aim assist. I'm pretty sure most players are. It's actually not that strong on Battlefield as far as I can tell. Not like Call of Duty where once you locked on, it continued to accurately track the player you were aiming at with no effort of your own.

Since I'm a PC player first and I'm HARRRRRRRRRDCORRRRRRRE up the butt (not really), whenever I play on my PS3 I turn it off most of the time. Notable exception is The Darkness 1 because actual aiming in that game is fucking horrible and takes away all of the enjoyment.

I'm a console gamer and I always turn it off when I can. I don't get why people say it's harder to aim on console, I've never had trouble with it. Granted I'm not exactly the Headshot King of Shooter-land but I get by. Games like Farcry and stuff, I don't know why you'd leave it on, it just means the game requires less skill which I never find as fun.

If I'm using a controller, yes. Analog sticks are far too imprecise.

On a PC with mouse and keyboard? No way.

This. Dear gods, this.

It's not even that it feels "dirty" to me. It's primarily because turning on aim assist actually makes my aiming accuracy worse. It becomes unnecessarily hard for me to make my usual quick, twitchy accuracy shots. And in many cases, landing close or long-range headshots is a futile endeavor entirely.

So no. I don't use aim-assist. I think it's a worthless feature when it comes to keyboard and mouse setups, but I do find it useful for controller-based shooters. It can help compensate for the inaccuracy and latency issues inherent in dual analog stick configurations.

To be fair, that was around the time shooters were making the full-on transition from keyboard only controls to keyboard and mouse. Quite a lot of players (especially those who'd never played a first-person shooter) were absolutely terrible with a mouse. So an aim-assist helped both the new mouse-players and the old keyboard-players.

Granted, some PC devs still include this feature today, but it's less prevalent than it was back then.

While true, I find the claims that it has (apparently) never ever been there aside from the last few years, to be wrong. Same goes for the claims that (apparently) auto aim and aimbots are the same thing.

But moreover, I may be overestimating how popular Counter-Strike is, but the option is there in CS. Sure, it's coming from the HL engine, but CS has had more popularity and was played mainstream for longer than HL or UT. I thought it has been one of the iconic shooters on PC for a long while - well past 1999. It was still popular when I quit it, which was around 2007. And while it's not like nobody is playing it now (heck, seems the 1.6 servers are plentiful) it's not the dominant leader. It's just one thing to prove that auto aim options were not seemingly invented that recently.

Me... aim assist? Are you... are you insulting me? Why, i oughta!

But seriously: Nope. I may be old, but i still have enough control - maybe in 40 years or so... (Also i don't have a console, where i play shooters with a pad)

I see it as a help i don't need or want to be able to play a "fair" game. I also don't check easy mode, i don't take more damage or health. Medium difficulty, no cheating.

I usually don't on PC, and I try to avoid it on console. Console shooters already have minor auto aim functions so I think it becomes obnoxious to add on the "proper" aim assist with it. Of course in games like Call of Duty that means I need to inject my veins with Monster energy drink to keep up with everyone else, but I'm already contrarian enough in those games for such a fact to be negligible.

So I saw the thread title and I immediately wondered why a thread about the Weaver Stance was in the gaming forum. I don't know whether to be disappointed or not...

Who said it was never there? For multi-play it's not even an option, single player it may be there, off by default unless it's a bad console developer. I know you are pushing your own little agenda, but do read the posts before you quote yourself a few more times.

Oh, I actually agree. If anything, you beat me to the punch in correcting some of the claims made in this thread. I just had to add a bit of info to your correction on why aim-assists were included so often in shooters back then.

As for Counter-Strike 1.6, aim-assist's inclusion was more a hold-over from Half-Life than it was a conscious design choice. Doesn't change the fact that it was in there, of course.

And yes, 1.6 is still hugely popular. Perhaps not on the level of CS:GO, Dota, LoL, etc, but it's still popular.
