Looking at the next round of fall preorder listings and various angry discussion threads, I've noticed just as much exclusive preorder bonuses this year as the last. The most common preorder bonus (except maybe for alternate costumes) are weapons and weapon packs. The thing is, even when I get these for free, I almost never use them. I feel like looking for new weapons and managing inventory is an essential part of games that have these systems in place. So why would I want to take a "exclusive uzi pack" or whatever and use that all the time? It wouldn't be as fun or challenging.

If it's a extra level, I'll definitely play it. Extra gun? Never. Extra level you have to beat in order to get special gun? Maybe.

I used the ones from pre-ordering Borderlands 2...until they became useless at level 5. Otherwise, I might check them out to see if they're any good.

I don't. I care more about a game's story then anything else, and DLC weapons tend to not mesh well with, or make sense in the context of, a game's story. Though I will admit that I fell head-over-heels in love with the Arc Projector in Mass Effect 2.

Most of that kind of gear usually doesn't end up being useful for long, but is better than starting gear. Borderlands 2 was like that with the Gearbox guns for example.

So I tend to use them a little.

I use the best weapons available to me, if that happens to be a pre-order weapon sure, I'll use it, but I don't go out of my way to either use or not use it.

No, I find that a ton of weapon variety is stupid in games, and don't care for weapon packs either. Lets use BF3 as an example, tens upon tens of 5.56x45mm NATO assault rifles with 30 round magazines and only tiny non-cosmetic differences. Do we really need so much time and money spent on re-creating essentially the same thing with a different look?

If it's free then yes i may use it at the start of a game until I find a combo that works for me

Only if it's something completely different from what you could normally get. For example, in Fallout: New Vegas, the preorder gear was just normal weapons and armor with different stats. I sold it immediately and used the money for ammo, which was probably more use to me. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any preorder bonuses that I did use, but I know that I have used them at least once.

Depends on how good they are.

If they're good guns that are better than the majority of what you find, I'll use them until I find something better.

If they're average or sub average, I'll use something better.

Success > Style of gun, where it came from, or how long I've had it - unless its one of the few times I play multiplayer. In those cases I'll play by the server rules and try to keep it fair so the game is interesting rather than a one sided affair [Which is boring for both sides].

No. It sucks that most of those items have unique looks and stats, but instead of being an awesome reward somewhere down the line, they're plopped into your inventory at the start, breaking the flow of the game.

One of my favorite things about J.E. Sawyer's NV mod is that he moves the pre-order pack items to secret locations.

I don't pre-order a game to get a weapon pack, but if i pre-order a game and it comes with a weapon pack it would be a bit silly to not use it.
