When I was younger I did use it as I didn't know any better. Stopped using it halfway through high school.

This still makes me chuckle occasionally though:

Once I realized the movie was Brokeback Mountain, this picture made me Rolfcopter really hard.

And this ^^^ ladies and gents is an asshat.
Good job being insulting.

I give all curse words 0 meaning. I use as much vocabulary as possible and none of it gets to me. Racist terms are 100 times better.
Go fuck your cousin you inbred redneck son of a whore.
Don't you dare insult my nationality. You have no idea who I am and it is horrible that you feed the stereotype of inbreeding and through a racist term as well.

I'm Hispanic, so shoot at the right race this time coward.
Go drown some kittens you bigoted ************. And guess what... if it talks like a redneck, its a fucking redneck. You're a disgrace to Hispanic people (my godfather is from Madrid, Spain).
Holy shit, you're a horrible person.

EDIT: I guess, perhaps, I should elaborate.

Do you think he means it as an insult for gay people when he uses those words? Do you think that whenever he calls something "gay" or "homo" he's thinking "homosexuals are an affront to the Lord and must burn"?

NO. He's joking around. He's calling something stupid using admittedly more colorful language, but all he's doing is calling the OBJECT stupid, not the lifestyle.

If he is, I'd agree to calling him a prick. If you're saying stuff like that though? You're just as bad for assuming people from the southern USA are all redneck inbred bigots. I've met people from the fucking boonies there, the most poverty afflicted places there, and they have more dignity in their pinky than you have in your entire fucking body.

So, kindly, grow the fuck up, you horrible, horrible person.

As with many words in our "english" language, "gay" has a few meanings. I use gay as in insult to describe actions that could be used to describe someone who's so happy/goofy that they're acting in a stupid fashion--i.e. dumb--basing this off of it's first use.

Gay, as a homosexual desciption, is slang.

A homosexual person may be described as "fruity," as can a very "raunchy fart." Why is it okay to use "fruity?"

A word is, at the end of the day, only a word.

Absolutely not. I find it deeply offensive when people use that word as an insult. Not for myself, but for others that I know.

You may not be inbred, but that comment shows that you're quite obviously way more of an asshole than anyone I know that uses "gay" as an insult.

We use it out of irony. We use it out of irony with our gay friends. Our gay friends use it out of irony. Why?

Because given the right situation, it can make things funnier. Being politically correct has it's place, but when it comes down to humor, sometimes you need to push those boundaries.

Now, don't get me wrong: we don't outright use it to describe something. But let's say that we're joking with our friends, and one of the guys say:
"Oh, god, yeah, I love Taylor Swift!"
"Pfff, gay."

And we all have a laugh, because we all either love or have a respect for Taylor Swift. She's just, when looking at a purely "chick or guy" view, more for chicks.

So stop being so gay and get the stick out of your ass. Even most of those that do use it as a synonym for "bad" were just raised in a different environment. If your response to that is to call them inbred, you're just as bad as those who KNOW it's insulting and still say it in an insulting way.
I'm fully aware that some people use it jokingly, but see how things can be easily misunderstood? You, for instance, thought my comment was something worth writing an essay over even though my intention was to rouse a few giggles. Funny that.

I find this acceptable because while you are associating the word "gay" in a negative context, it in no way means you feel that gays are something to be viewed in a negative context. Take a look at the Harley driver episode of Southpark. No one calls each other "fags" because they hate gay people. The original meaning of those words has been subverted to general use for everything, and only the bleeding heart liberals think that you are disparaging a particular section of the population when you use those words.

Just remember folks, it's not the words but how you mean them. Y'all have a fucking nice day!
This is how I feel about it. Words have multiple meanings, especially when slang and other "informal" uses are allowed for. Like it or not, "gay" is slang for bad, stupid, unfair, etc. It has a meaning as an all around negative feeling. It probably started off as an insult in this form, but the two meanings are now separate, and for most people, completely unrelated. It's kind of gay, but that's just how it goes.

"Inbred" has never, ever been used as a joking insult. Ever. It's been used to talk down to people and call them retarded.

"Gay" has been used as a joking insult for years, about multiple things, and even though it can be used as an actual insult, the fact that a shit-load of people use it as a joke makes it more forgivable. Yes, the majority matters.

There is a VERY big difference.

In my native language, many people use a kinda similar word to gay, wich is "puto" and it more or less means gay, but there's also another similar word, "maricon". I have an entirely different interpretation for both words but they both mean more or less the same as gay. I sometimes use the word "puto" or "puta" when I'm chilling and having a nice conversation with my friends and I rarely use the word "maricon". It entirely depends on the tone you're saying it and the meaning you want to give to that single word. Spanish is a complex language if you don't fully understand it, specially mexican spanish.

As for the word "gay" itself, no, I never use it as an offense, but I do use it's spanish equivalents, rarely, to insult someone.

Where you live maybe, but me and my friends use the term a lot to reference stupid people. Again, it's the intent that matters, we use it against each other when we do stupid things. Get the fuck off your soap box.

^This. I don't use gay as an insult per se, but I do use it as a negative adjective. Let me demonstrate:

You live in a strange place, then. Though I mean no offense by that. Let's just agree to disagree and bash the guy that actually means it as a horrible insult?

I do occasionally but I'm trying to curb it as it's not a laughing matter and stories of homophobic bullying and the recent suicides and the like absolutely sicken me so I should distance myself from anything remotely similar.

No. I used to, but then I realized (as someone with several homo and bi-sexual friends) that I was being hypocritical. Now, as a teacher who often discusses sexuality with his (college) students, I fully realize just how NOT acceptable it is. It doesn't matter how individuals you know react. Even if they really are "OK" with it, it still doesn't make it OK.

As a transgender individual (not open about this on xbox live, obviously... my voice is male and I cant disguises it), I do find the use of it as an insult infuriating and offensive.

My general response though is to ask/reply 'Why, are you looking for a boyfriend/Sounds like your looking for a boyfriend.'

Yep. My town has a total of 2, maybe 3 homosexuals. I completely support gay people and gay marriage. But I use the word sometimes, but I am ALWAYS completely joking around. And to be offended by that is a tad bit rediculous.
