I did. Then I grew up. It wasn't really a matter of being offensive; it just seems like a useless word to use to insult anything. Calling something gay is either to some extent homophobic or just plain meaningless beyond saying "THIS IS BAD." I guarantee regardless of situation that there is a more apt word to use that won't make you out to be some fucking mongoloid.

I'd only use it sarcastically, like in this clip:

I only call something gay/fag if it matches the gay stereotype, but I don't mean it in an offensive way, but as homophobe as most people my age can be they take it as in insult.

I don't mind people calling me gay, since they clearly don't know that I am A-sex. Since I know the best what I am, I want and what I like.
I call people gay if it fits to the moment with humor. I almost never insult anyone. Hell, my Gaming group got 2 gay people (And one that has not confirmed, but he keeps trying to hit me up...) and we call these people gay time to times, they are ok with it. They even sometimes say: "Don't let me gay catch you", or describe something graphic they did last weekend in extreme detail on vent while we are trying to do some hard fight, the amount of wipes are countless.
So, I call people who don't get offended and are OK as gay now and then, and they call me, I am ok with it.
But using it as a random insult to someone doesn't really cut my edge, since great deal of the people around me in school and hobbies are gay or bi so...

ive had a pretty good share gay, lesbian, and bi friends over time. there were a few exceptions, but the vast majority of them have used words like gay, or even ******, whether jokingly or as a genuine insult. and while ****** is one of those words that i find offensive enough that i have to force myself to even type it, when someone else uses that f-word, so long as it isnt meant to be an insult to a gay person specifically for being gay, i usually dont get worked up about...espesially if the person speaking is gay.

but the word gay, yeah, totally use it from time to time, sometimes jokingly, sometimes as a genuine insult.

if its good enough for almost every homosexual person i have ever met in my entire life, its good enough for me...except sleeping with boys...thats just fucking gay, dude. XD

EDIT: wow, at first i got bored with flipping through everyone elses opinions, so i just posted my own and moved on. but eventually i came back and scrolled through. some of you are reeeeeally super-sensitive, even to the point of almost being hateful, about this.

well, im gonna try and nip any defamation in the bud: if any bleeding-heart wants to call ME a homophobe, among other mean words (that probably pale "gay" by comparison, lol), let me say i have actually experimented before, and may yet again if the opportunity presents itself and i feel so inclined, because while i love women, im still not entirely sure where i stand on dudes.

i dont know if that makes me straight, bi, or bicurious, but im fairly certain it shoots down any claim of me being homophobic before it ever makes it off the runway. :p

Not to people, but when I'm playing Blazblue or something online and I lose a match I know I should have one, I've been known to let loose a few "GAAAAAAY" shouts.

I've also shouted "STAAAAAIGHT" once or twice though, for the lulz.

Pretty much, if it has a strong A, I'll shout it.
Let us AAAAAAAAAA, may the Fonz be with you. That will never leave your head now and will be said every time you win a game.

Anywho, I've used it generally as an exclaimation to something bad, but I use all manor of words to describe that. Any word that's short, easy to say, and said in a tone meant to portray my anger, distaste, sadness etc. is fine.

Never as an insult, at least not a serious insult, past the age of 10. Jokingly to gay friends I still use it. "You gay! Wait..."

I'd like to say I didn't but I'd be lying. I don't often say it when refering to people, mostly just things like "thats gay". The only time I use it when refering to a person is "don't be gay" when they refuse to do something.

I use it as an insult all the time, but not out of any intolerance of gays. The same with retarded. I also use the word ****** as a greeting sometimes, despite being white.

Language changes, and I see no problem in using words like these if there is no malicious intent behind them. They're just words, and I would even go as far to say that jokingly using them is an affrount to intolerance, as it trivialises language, one of their weapons which remains more effective if you put it on a pedestood as a big shock word.

My gay housemate and I call each other gay all the time.

I also have Indian friends that when I'm with we call each other "paki".

Take away the biggot's weapons by blunting their language, not banning it.

To paraphrase John Green, an insult is meant to make someone feel bad about themselves. There is nothing bad about being gay (gayness? gayosity?) so it is not an insult.

I used to use it, then I realized that some people might find it offensive, and I guess then I sort of stopped. It wasn't particularly difficult to stop, it wasn't even a conscious effort, it was just something I didn't do anymore.

I've never used gay as an insult, but I have used queer as a negative description. That's less intended a jab at people, and more that I tend towards using anachronistic words in speech. (queer originally meant strange or weird)

No. I only say gay when I am referring to a person who is gay. I don't get it being an insult. Why is that?

It is not for me to say. People will just take offense at something new.

In my mind, no word should be viewed as offensive (I understand why some do find them that way). All words should be available to all people. A use of freedom of thought and speech. I do not have to agree with you but I will respect your right to think freely.

wow this got quite a couple of replies. I try not to because you never really know who is gay and who isnt unless they come out and if they hear it as a insult then they might not want to come out

My boyfriend has some very camp habits. Occasionally i'll call him gay in the sense that he fabulously fits the 80s stereotype of a homosexual, but never in derogatory terms... Because he's lovely.

Totally, I call my best friend a homo all the time. Then he tries to say it back and it just doesn't have the same effect...
