Why cant I be a plate wearing crossbowmen with a broadsword and a buckler as backup?
Strange that you mention that so specifically, because War of the Roses actually lets you do just that.

I liked the warrior mage archetype ever since playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 as a Sith Lord and facing down Darth Sion. Just that moment where he's running at me and I put the lightsaber away and am all "the force is my ally" and crush him with my mind.

It's moments like that which got me into gaming in the first place. So badass.

EDIT: At the end of the day it's got to be warrior. Badass moments aside; being able to hit something over and over again is sustainable death dealing that you can believe in. Magic means you can run out of mana or spell slots and that's it, stealth means that once you're detected that you're probably dead.

I prefer rogues, rangers and necromancers. However, if the spells are interesting enough, I'll play a straight pew pew mage. Not a big fan of warriors. I find them to be a bit bland.

Though to be quite honest, I prefer battle mages the most. Throwing on a ton of protective spells and wading into battle where I can dish out both steel and spell is just pure fun. If they can carry both a staff and sword, all the better.

Whichever one has dual blades.
If multiple have it, then it all depends on how each mechanically plays.
Some games have Rogues as high DPS fast attackers with low health, other have them as support roles useful mostly just for unlocking doors and disarming traps. If the former is the case, I will choose that. If the latter, I will choose the next closest thing to the former, which is usually a warrior.
I don't really enjoy playing mages that much. Sitting back and just casting stuff isn't really my style, I get bored of it quickly. I prefer to charge in and attack, rather than wait at the back channelling something.

I tend to gravitate towards Warriors, but lately I've been trying to go with Mages as well.

A couple years ago, I would have never even thought about it, it would have been Warrior all the way, but lately I've been trying to use all classes.

Hybrid classes are the best though.

mixture of rogue and warrior. I like to be light and fast, sneaky when I need to be. But being able to use a variety of different swords and sometimes shields is what I love most.

I tend to lean towards the warrior. It appeals to me the most. Living and dying by the sword, hailing gods of war as they march to battle, embracing your death when it comes, being fearless.. things like that. It just really appeals to me. I like mages too, it's hard to be more badass than an ancient, white/grey bearded destroyer of worlds in a robe bending the elements to your will and shit. I have no interest in stealthy/thief rogue characters. They always seemed real slimy and pathetic to me. I like archer characters, though, I consider that more of a warrior thing. That whole sneaking around in the shadows with a dagger thing is just.. ew, to me.

Mage here. I like gibbing my opponents with lightning (Only to have it travel back in my face half the time.) or summoning lots of beasties to fight with me.

Warrior.

more or less by default.
Mage never fulfilled any power fantasies of mine because you're not face to face...and rogue is just a dirtbag version of a warrior.
Depending on my mood and the game I'll pick the rogue...but only because I'm effectively playing as a nimble warrior.

So warrior it is.

I always play rouge. I think it's the closest to how I would fight in a real battle, that is, hide in the corner until the enemy turned away from me and then stab them in the back. Also rouges tend to be weak and run away a lot. That sounds like me.

I like to be a Mage. Do high amounts of damage with magic and stand in the back firing spells while my warrior and rogue companions are the ones getting run through with a sword, dagger, ETC. If the game allows it like Dragon Age: Origins, I like to be a battle Mage like Gandalf. That way I can still stay in the back and fire spells but if an enemy breaks through I can hold my own against them in close combat.

Rogue, all the time - I'm always the hunter, rogue, thief type character. I like stealth, and ranged combat - while everyones involved in the melee, I'm the dude firing arrows into spines from the tree line :)

Obviously I'm enjoying Farcry3 right now.

I tend to switch between being a warrior and a rogue, some times bashing stuff is just to much fun to pass up, though hiding in the shadows and killing people with a stab to the back is always fun.

The one that can move. What I mean is I like mobility, so that means a Rogue or Warrior depending on the game.

warriors and rogues are so boring. They just hit or shoot things. Mages throw fireballs and lightning! And summon firey deamons from hell to do their biding. And raise the dead. And shapeshift. And go invisable. All so cool compared to boring warriors and rogues.

While I mainly like to hit things with my various forms of wood with metal attached, I do get the occasional urge to hurl fireballs and steal from a peasant's pocket. So call me a roguish mage-warrior.

Almost always a mage of some manner. Though I do prefer a heavy armored mace wielding summoner or a magically enhanced thief with a taste for poison.
