Because, I gotta tell ya, as much as a fan I was of the first game, I actually thought the FPS looked interesting. It certainly is XCOM in name only, but on it's own merits, it had a fantastic aesthetic and some interesting strategy elements that could have made it a worthwhile game. But, because it was half-heartedly slapped with the XCOM title for brand recognition, it is perhaps doomed to an eternity of scorn from the fan community.

What do the rest of you think? Are you glad that it appears to be gone?

I looked really interesting to me, I said it once and I'll say it again: they alienated their audience by calling it Xcom, it would have been an unusual thing that peaked interest if they said it was "inspired" by Xcom, rather than being Xcom

I'm kinda mildly uninterested in it. I do appreciate that they are trying something different with it, but I don't like the setting/aesthetic. It's just not a time period that appeals to me. All in all, I haven't seen much about that game that would get me excited in any way, shape or form...

No thanks, I prefer strategies over shooters, infact the only shooter I play nowadays is DayZ (And the WarZ in a couple weeks)

I feel that since the only simillarity with the xcom series is that there are aliens and you must fight to turn their superior technology against them, the co use probably win over a lot of the detractors with a simple name change.

Project blue book sounds attractive to me.

Nope. I have enough shooters, I'm full on the things. I'll be fine if one doesn't end up coming out. Glad we're getting a strategy game instead. Yeah it sucks for the people who wanted to try it, but I'm not too bothered. There's plenty of shooters already, I'm sure they'll find something else that tickles their fancy.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Since a true xcom game is about to come out I no longer mind the direction that the fps was taking. I think that annoyed me so much about it was that it didn't seem to be xcom, I'm not against doing an fps based on another game world, but if your going to then don't ignore everything from that world. But as I said before, they are making a real xcom strategy game now so even with how different the fps was from the series, its ok, long as they don't forget there are still people who like strategy games.

I think there's a lot of potential in it to make a more unique shooter than the average ones we've been getting over the last few years, so yeah, I was a little interested in it. Mostly because I have no ties to the franchise anyway. I'm not really all that big on strategy games to begin with, especially turn-based ones.

I'd love another good squad-based shooter that gives you full tactical command over your squad. (Not implying that was what they had in mind, of course. It just seems like it would be the way to remain the most faithful to the style of the original games while still making it a first-person shooter.)

I think the game has the potential to be a very interesting game, but the negative hype regardless of quality is going to be huge because of the comparison and the FPS/strategy rivalry it will create. I don't feel like I've got the emotional strength at the moment to defend a game from all that fuss.

... so I guess I would rather they don't try to introduce a potentially innovating game to the market because they chose an IP which is just going to screw them over even if it is good. It's sad, but that's the way it is. Maybe if Syndicate was good we'd be more open to the Fallout 3/New Vegas are good games argument, but it wasn't so this game will fail.

The problem is if the dev team had put a lot of work into it, that works probably gone to waste, because breaking in a new IP is hard enough and the game probably won't have enough support to make a lot of money, so the publisher would have to push the game out whilst it's still buggy and unpolished.

Just maybe they might hope that the XCOM strategy game builds up some public IP awareness amongst non-game-forum-posting people, because those are the sort of people who could be sold on the idea of a shooter sequel probably, but I don't imagine the XCOM strategy game is going to particularly sell in that demographic anyway

This, basically.

What do you think of when you think "XCOM"?

You think geoscape, balls-hard turn based battles, and soldiers who tend to always die in 1 shot despite having the best armor in the game.

In the original reveal trailer/gameplay walkthrough of the 50's XCOM, we saw UNARMORED men in suits and fedoras absorbing MULTIPLE laser/plasma round with no ill effect.

I'm sorry, but saying that something like THAT is XCOM is like saying Banjo Kazzoie Nuts and Bolts was a Banjo Kazooie game.

I'd look forward to it. The game looked great from what I saw. Hopefully the old school Xcom fans will pipe down now that they have their strategy game and the FPS can get made.

I was always convinced this was the problem. The fan outcry shitstorm would've never happened if they called it something else. Curiosity would've surely risen if the devs mentioned that they were inspired by XCOM, rather than just slapping XCOM on it for no reason.

The game itself looked like it could've been interesting too.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the x-com fps it looks a dam site more interesting then most of the shooters that have come out recently, but then again I never saw the problem obviously people have forgotten about enforcer and interceptor not that I can blame them.

Leave the XCOM FPS alone!

Seriously, the original devs already bastardized the franchise with interceptor, enforcer, and they were even working on their own FPS game before it got canned, which I was excited for as well.

I think the 1950s aesthetic is awesome and the overall look is pretty kickass, people who are working on it either have more talent or just care more than Starbreeze/Syndicate, so there's definitely potential. Not saying that the potential won't be squandered, but if the reviews are good enough I'll definitely pick it up.

If they made the game fit into the lore and included important xcom features, like perma death, then I would say that it could work. The trouble is that the game that was displayed years ago was just another generic shooter that they promised had an RPG backend. Those already exist, but that doesn't make them xcom. The fact that a real xcom game is coming out this week however makes me not care about it whatsoever. :)
