I think it could have turned out to be a good game, but I am not a big fan of fps games so I wouldn't want it. The problem people got with it is probably that it's not what they want from Xcom more than that the game looks crappy.

I know a lot of people treat their favorite franchises with more zealous distaste for changes in cannon or reimmaginings of it than the roman catholic church does the bible, but honestly, if people would stop being so damn uptight about things like this we might see more cool shit, and you never know if a game is good or shit until it at least comes out or releases a demo, to me enforcer was fun, fun in a chaotic alien slaughtering funhouse kinda way, and co-op was fun... I enjoyed the original, and I think it's awesome that they actually made a new version of the original concept...a "true" xcom game, but honestly, I want to see how the FPS plays out before I judge it as being an abomination.

I'd rather it was called Xcom: Generic subtitle rather than calling it Xcom. They only called it Xcom for brand recognition and if you are doing that just call it a spin off and be done with it.
Was it announced/demoed before or after the Syndicate shambles?
Would have left a bad taste in anyone's mouth, more so for fans of older IPs.

From the demo I saw, it looked as if it could have some interesting mechanics, and being made by 2K, who made Bioshock (and Bioshock 2, for better or worse), both of which I enjoyed as FPSes; but ultimately, it comes down to what Yahtzee has said before; the standard template for this generation of AAA games is FPS, and it's become so stale it's powdered, like platformers before it.
I think they were announced relatively close together or something similar so there was a bit of that going around.

I couldn't care less about it, but that it threatened to drag the XCOM brand through even more mud. (This, after Enforcer, Interceptor, and Terror From The Deep, mind you.)

The game didn't look terrible and I'll probably pick it up when it hits the bargain self. That being said, I think it was a mishandling of the IP and a cheap attempt to ride Fallout 3's successful coat-tails by latching any old nonsense to a beloved older title.

The better question at this point might be, Do you the Xcom FPS is vapor ware?

I don't think it's so bad. Granted I've never played an X-COM game and haven't played the new XCOM, partly because while I dig the base building and macro strategy element, I'm not to into the turn based tactical stuff they have for the actual battles.

The new XCOM game to me seems like basically an FPS that gives you greater control over your squad mates while in battle, with some watered down strategy elements surrounding it like buying upgrades and choosing which missions to do, which sounds pretty cool. Also I really like the aesthetic.

Xcom: Enemy Unknown is the turn based strategy game that was recently released.

This is a thread about the FPS Xcom that received a lukewarm response when it was announced.

Yes. Forget the damn strategy Xcom, I grew sick of strategy games years ago. The Xcom shooter looks like an interesting new direction for the series.

I really did like the original concept. An FBI grunt goes on a series of investigations and discovers black goo from outer space is attacking the populace. Tense pacing and the atmosphere of 1960's American suburbia, where anything can happen in the privacy of one's home, gave it a feeling like a mix of Bioshock and X-Files. You don't see many detective games on the market, and the fact that this would have taken place in the midst of an alien attack would have made it a game that couldn't fail. Even if it was one more in a crowd of FPS games, at least it had a sense of style you could appreciate.

This is one of those times where a project with great potential is snubbed only because it wants to do something different. Because the fans were upset it was first person and not a strategy game, 2K cut out the detective angle and put more focus on squad-based gameplay. Now XCOM looks like it's trying too hard to be Mass Effect, deriding the sense of style it used to have.

If the rumors are true and the game drops as a $30 download, 2K is being smart and cutting their losses. The way it looks now, the game is set up to fail.
