Just an honest question stemming from the "nerd" stereotype as being anyone with glasses. Also because my mind wandered during class today and found myself wondering "how many people are wearing glasses today?" and thought i'd ask my favorite forum on the internet

I'm halfway between option 1 and 2 (blind as a bat w/o them and work/class).

Legally, I am required to have my glasses on in order to drive a vehicle. I can see without them but words become blurry and I have a hard time seeing everything I need to see without them. I COULD live without them but it would really suck.

Thought it said sunglasses then.

I will probably need glasses later this year as my left eye is slightly fuzzy, im tossed between getting glasses or bright blue contacts. or both.

Thankfully it doesn't impair my view with driving, but hurts my eye when reading after a while, which I read a lot.

Currently, and can't see worth shit without them. I'm trying out contact lenses on Friday, so maaaaybeeeee that might change soon.

I noticed that there are a lot more people wearing glasses these days, and that glasses are considered much more fashionable than they were even just a decade or two ago. Remember those cartoons where a child would find himself having wear glasses and everyone in school would make fun of him and call him "foureyes" or whatever? That never happens anymore. Like, at all. Or maybe that's just where I live.

Yeah. Just got a new pair, too.
I got a little overzealous when I was drumming the other night and managed to fling them off my face with a stick. So they're already a little broken. >.<

Apparently 14 million Americans [http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/may2006/nei-09.htm] are visually impaired. That's a lot of people that need glasses.

Incidentally, I think the word 'nerd' needs to be revisited in terms of relevance in the information age. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, the guy who co-developed the USB standard [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEDmvTH3MWg], they were all "nerds", and they kick ass.

Do kids still call each other "nerds" as an insult? It's been so long since I've been in school. "You! You're different than me and all of my friends! DIFFERENT!!! [points finger, makes Body Snatchers scream]

Nah, it doesn't happen at all as far as I can tell. If you show up one day wearing glasses around my school you might get a little shit for a day or two and then return to normal.

I don't so much "wear them" as "they're welded to my face."
Only ever take them off when necessary.

If I'm going out, watching TV, or playing a game on my PS3/Xbox 360, then yeah I'll wear them.

If I'm just using the computer, I generally keep them off.

Yeah, and if I ever go down that route, I'm never having the sunglasses thing on my face like Adam Jensen.

OT- I need my glasses. I'm not as blind as my friends, but I still need them. I won't wear contacts as I'm afraid I'll lose them or I'll do some stupid thing and smash them. At least I can see my glasses.

Yeah... Those were kinda stupid. I guess thats why google is developing those glasses that project stuff on them. Once those hit the shelves you KNOW everyone will want them. Just hope that they can actually function as glasses. either that or work as some form of clip-on attachment.

This. Not only do I have to wear them to see anything two feet in front of me (yay for having two almost-blind parents), but I also like the way I look in glasses far more than without.

Also I could never in my life do contacts. I'm terrified of anything touching my eyes.

I used to, and I still keep a pair around, but I only use it at night right before bed after I take my contacts out.

I honestly don't mind wearing them, but my whole family scolds me for looking nerdy (they aren't large or stereotypically "nerdy" looking, but whatever).

I do like contacts though, even if they make sleeping over at someone's house a pain in the ass.

I wear mine all the time, but I'm nowhere near blind if I don't have them on. Things get blurry after a few feet, though.

Yep.

The ONLY times I take them off are to sleep and shower.

Nope, haven't had the need so far.

I say so far because i'm noticing things in the distance getting a bit blurry as I get older.

But so far haven't needed them.
