You know, that is something I have never been able to understand.. People getting dressed up and attempting to "show off their wealth" at church, where they are supposed to be going to worship " Jesus" who is against wealth and greed and tells people to give all wealth away to the poor because hoarding wealth is one of the worst things you can possibly do? Isn't that a bit counterproductive? I mean if they really want to go to church to be offensive, why are they going in the first place? I see people do this all the time and I have never understood this concept.Parasondox said:Nope and never again. My mother would put them on my for church when I was younger to show as if we have some sort of wealth and I hated it. It has put me off them ever since.
"The more money you have, the more God has blessed you". Some said that to me in the past and I've heard preachers say it themselves. That's the best answer I can give really. I know, it contradicts everything Jesus was about but they still follow that mindset. My family and relatives, not including me because I no longer consider myself part of any religion, are Christians and believe they have to dress smart or look wealthy in order to gain some sort of higher status in the church. I see it a lot at black churches. I even questioned why we has to wear suits to church if God/Christ only cares about whats in our hearts? Shouldn't it be about whats on the inside? In response I was either told to not ask that question again or that we shouldn't look bad in front of others because they look and judge. Once again another contradiction because they shouldn't judge.Lil devils x said:You know, that is something I have never been able to understand.. Not even sure how a pastor or any person who has read the Bible for that matter could say that when the Bible stated repeatedly and quite clearly that the wealthy can't get into heaven. In fact, you are not even supposed to dine with someone who is greedy. LOLParasondox said:"The more money you have, the more God has blessed you". Now, this isn't all churches. So churches dont demand that you give in the offering or have a dress code or anything like that. They just ask that you come with a good heart and even if you are of a different faith, you are still welcome to join in. Your clothing and wealth shouldn't matter.
But hey, that's my family. They do as they wish really.
Cor:5:11: But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
Cor:6:10: nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Luke:12:15: Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."
Matthew:6:19o not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Matthew:6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
Matthew:19:21:" Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.?22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
Timothy:6:9: Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Timothy:6:17: Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
timothy:6:4:he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. Ephesians:5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a person is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Hebrews:13:5: Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

It is unfortunate to be so true. Religion can often be a bit of a potent catalyst for capitalist desires due to its' malleable philosophical nature and has succeeded oh so well already. To plaster the blessing of god onto selfish goals is something we shouldbe aware enough to avoid, but not for all people. The feeling of 'success' is all the sweeter when you tell yourself god willed it so, how special that must feel. Sometimes the best parts of our family can offer are lessons on how now to be, as with much of society. My own is bad enough.Parasondox said:John Oliver did a segment on it on his show and even before he did that piece, I already knew some of the shady shit so churches got up too.
