Doctor Who is a tv programme on British television that is generally on BBC ONE

After watching the last two seasons of Doctor Who and honestly hating every bloody minute of that tripe. I ask to you fellow escapistians. Do you like Doctor Who!

I personally (and this is just personally) Hate Doctor Who with a passion, it makes no sense and the characters and effects are so poorly done its just upsetting.

For instance.. In the on New Years Eve this person got stuck in a chamber that was about to flood with radiation. Firstly the barrier between him and the outside world was glass and as we know Gamma Radiation works on an electromagnetic wavelength and can only be stopped by high density materials.. like a lot of lead. They tried to explain how this was special glass that doesnt allow radiation to permiate.. okey ill dig...

They zoom into the person in the glass container and you can clearly see that between the door is a very wide GAP, quite noticeable.. so why have the radiation proof glass?

Im probebly just not very good at having an imagination but this isnt really trying.. Also its let down by bad acting and ... Well Catherine Tate... for god sake ...

Also i believe its very popular and want to find out why..

Edit: I have to watch tv with my family every so often.. i get made to watch it. I do not watch it off my own accord.

I've seen like two episodes and loved them both. (One was the weeping angels episode - it was amazing!)

I really don't know why I haven't started watching it properly yet...

Its not bad enough for me to stop watching.

EDIT: Looking at the other posts am I in the very tiny minority in thinking that the weeping angels episode was one of the worst?

I've only seen a couple episodes and they both involved the Daleks, which I'm afraid to say I have a bit of a hard time taking seriously.

So from that standpoint the show already isn't off to a flying start.

I'd probably be willing to try and watch more though.

Due to the show's premise of a man travelling though time and space in a police box, I am about as harsh a critic of it as I am - say - Metal Wolf Chaos. I expect a lot of things that don't make sense to turn up.

Personally, I have good episodes and bad episodes. The series finale's for me tend to fall ever into the bad - especially the third and fourth seasons. Good Episode Twelve, but then we have Episode Thirteen, which more often than not is a let down. I think the only good finale Tennent appeared in was unfortunately overshadowed by this dialog gem:

"Identify yourself!"

"You will Identify first!"

Still, Russel's gone. The last finale we've seen was basically the end of his run. We may not see much of Donna, Martha, Rose, Mickey, Wilf etc. On the more positive side, the man who'se picked it up is Stephen Moffat - the guy who created the "Are you my mummy?" episode. Which is one of the better episodes of New Who.

I think the problem is that Dr Who needs you to kind of...imagine. I mean, you have to just suspend your disbelief to enjoy it. I hated it when I first started watching for the exact same reasons you stated, but when I once watched it out of boredom I realised I actually quite liked the character of The Doctor. Then I started to see surprising depth in it.

Don't get me wrong, the show isn't amazing, but it's something I'd watch if I was bored. It just requires you to use a little imagination.

What's wrong with Catherine Tate? I thought she was the best companion out of the three David Tennant had. She actually stood up to him and treated him as a companion, she didn't just want to shag him.

Other than that, I think you're nitpicking a bit. Just cause there might be one or two moments of inconsistency doesn't mean the whole show's bad. But that's your opinion, I know.

I think the reason it's popular is because it's a British institution, everyone knows The Doctor and the TARDIS, it's historic, going back forty years.

I enjoy it as it entertains me.
As DupicateValue said, the best episode is the Weeping Angels one (can't remember the name) and I'm glad to see them making a comeback in the next series.
As for your Catherine Tate niggle, did you actually see some of the later episodes? If you only saw her first ones, she was pretty bad but I think towards the later ones she got better at the role she needed to portray.

I really like the series. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the assistant from season 3 (Martha, who to me was a little too close to the previous assistant to truely stand out). I think it's both my lack of science understanding, and my ability to switch off my reality sensor; it's just good fun.

I actually liked Catherine Tate as the assistant; she wasn't great at the beginning, but as the series progressed, she underwent some serious development, and at the end suffered a tragic fate because that character development was lost, and she was back to a dislikable character.

I can see why some people may dislike the show, but to me it's got some truely great moments, and it's something that people can sit down together and watch. That, to me, is what TV should be :)

EDIT: To all those who've mentioned the Weeping Angels, I would have to agree wholeheartedly. That is a truely standout episode.

Acting bad? Not really as far as I remember it. There are some individual character's that aren't quite convincing (Donna, surprisingly I hear, was however not one of them), but most of the time it's good.

And really, complaining about scientific inaccuracies? You obviously take the show far more serious that it takes itself. The show constantly lampshade the asspull science it has and it's quite obvious they aren't even trying to make it believable. It's really as much fantasy as it is sci-fi, probably even more so.
And it's okay. Doctor Who could be the definition of campy.

Well, this is certainly an improvement on your last attempt.

I like it precisely for the hokey special effects. And there are episodes which are astounding [see Don't Blink and The Empty Child]. If I want serious science fiction, I go elsewhere.

Edit: I should give my own thoughts on Doctor Who. Which are I like the show, the acting is quite good but far from perfect, the only thing that displeases me, is the new Doctor.

Edit 2: I noticed the thread is different, from your last one, it's the same text but you manged to protray it in a different way. So I guess it won't be locked.

Doctor Who is kinda cool in that cobbled-together, low-budget BBC way. As in you get the sense that somebody was trying very hard to make an interesting show with very little money. It becomes an exercise in minimalism.

Suckled on special effects, I never found it very interesting. Except for the Daleks. Who can't love Daleks?

So you watched two full seasons of a show you really hate? That makes sense. Some people like things and some don't. I try and not watch shows I don't like, but thats just me.

I reckon the cheese factor is an integral part of appreciating doctor who, especially since the Daleks and cybermen are based on their classic counterparts.

Awesomeness does come round in episodes like Blink and Silence in the Library because they make something tangible out of the sinister nature of ordinary things.

All in all, I suppose it's down to personal taste and if watching a quirky thin man stumble around spouting long words and waving a LED wand around for an hour isn't your thing, then it's just not your thing.

If you really want to give the show a shot, definitely watch Blink.

I try to give shows a chance. A couple of eps from s1, then 1 or 2 from later seasons to see if it improves (e.g Seinfeld S1 was very clumsy and looked pretty amateur).

I think it jumps between being god awful and apsolutely brilliant. I stick with it for the brilliant bits.

But yes, Catherien Tate was pretty awful for most of it.

The first and second seasons? You mean with William Hartnell, right?

I suspect you mean season 27 and 28 or so ;)

I don't really care about modern Doctor Who. I liked Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker though. I've seen bits of the Hartnell and Troughton doctors, and they were pretty good too.

Yes! At last! Someone else who hates Catherine Tate and thinks this show is an overated pile of crap.

I absolutely cannot stand that program, the actors are appalling and the plots are predictable to the extreme. Yet everybody loves it, which confuses me no end.
