Look, as someone who has seen a bit of the original Doctor Who series from the 60's to 80's, I can safely tell you that the new series (prominently featuring the best Doctor so far, David Tennant) is a hell of a lot better than the old series. Yes, sometimes the effects in the new series aren't up to par with something on say, the Sci-Fi... sorry SyFy channel, but they are still a helluva lot better than the cardboard tubes they used to make into Daleks. At least now the series has some decent production values. And as for the acting... well, most of the main cast (The Doctor and his various companions) have generally been pretty good... though I will admit that I did find Rose Tyler pretty annoying, but even she was better than the pants-on-head retarded damsel-in-distress companions The Doctor used to hang around with. And the writing is actually a lot better this time around to. Think that radiation-proof glass was rediculous? Try watching the "Time War" episodes. I mean, its supposed to be this epic battle between the Timelords and the Daleks, so why aren't there more actual battles being shown? Out of all of the Time War episodes, only one of them had an actual battle, and they cheated out on the whole thing by showing it from the Daleks' point of view (which meant that you couldn't see the beam effects as the timelords in the room are being murdered).

And one other thing... for those of you who think the new series isn't good... just be glad they only brought that annoying robot dog back for one episode, and then promptly killed him off again. Before Jar Jar came along, that fucking dog was considered the most irritating science-fiction character ever.

I've never liked any version of the series.

Ever.

I have to qualify those statements by admitting I've yet to see the newest version of it, but I suspect it will be more of the same: apathy, confusion about why it's popular and, eventually, boredom.

If you don't love Dr Who, youre dead inside, a bleak dull nihilist with no connection to your fellow man.

Seriously though man, stop complaining about dodgey effects and enjoy the drama, its the BBC, its Dr Who for gods sake, not the prequel trilogy. It tells moving stories in an intelligent manner, and thats why its so popular.

There's more genuine human understanding, more actual proper popular art in one good episode of Dr Who than five seasons of Stargate.

First, it's science-fantasy, not science-fiction. If you're worried about handwavium glass and a bit of an air-gap, you are definitely not watching it for the right reasons. Funny that you nitpick the radiation-proof magic glass box, but completely gloss over the single largest goofy non-science underpinning of the show; HE TRAVELS THROUGH TIME.

Second, the tenth doctor was awesome. Better than many others, and I'm sad to see him go. Given the negative reaction against him, I'm wondering if folks just can't appreciate understated dry wit any longer. He pulled several episodes through that would have been complete rubbish without his performance.

Third, the supporting actors/actresses have always been hit and miss in this series. Actually, in just about any made-for-TV sci-fi series. They have constrained budgets, like everything else targeted for TV, and there's no chance for them to pull the FX or talent that you are used to seeing in the theatre. This obviously doesn't come up as often in a drama or sitcom, which typically deal with less expansive plots. They either get to pick a core cast and stick with it, or at least use pretty standard villain/sidekick archetypes for their recurring minor roles.

Fourth and last, I was pleasantly surprised by the finale. They actually came up with a plot that was worthy of the "a big bad evil is prophesied" setup, which ordinarily leads to a complete let down and a generic "shadowy dark evil monster coming to destroy the universe, for no particular reason". Also, considering how little the previous incarnations touched on the actual Time Lord origins, it's nice to see them taking on the challenge of exploring that, and so far in doing so in a not-completely-stupid manner.

You're complaining that a science fiction show about time travel and fighting aliens isn't realistic enough?

This baffle anyone else?

I personally enjoyed the Doctor Who seasons with the Doctor portrayed by David Tennant but it hasn't interested me enough to look for the previous seasons to watch.

You make a good point about the glass thing. I thought that was pretty pisspoor. They could have had ominous naval port doors instead.

I actually do like Doctor Who, though, but I'm really glad Russel T Davies (head writer) has left, as though I'm grateful for him ressurecting the franchise, he wrote the worst stories out of ALL the writers

You can tell it's his because the first half (or first episode if it's a two-parter) seems to build up to something really secret, mysterious, universe-changing and epic. Lots of awesome things pull together and come to a climactic cliffhanger at the end of this segment

The second half (or episode) starts when the cliffhanger is dispelled in a dismissive and "meh" fashion, and the rest of the episode spirals out of control as Russel tries to make it even MORE suspense-ish, before ending with an even bigger anticlimax that leaves everything just the way it was and all the villains DEAD THIS TIME NOT COMING BACK...OR ARE THEY "DUN DUN DUUUH" (They WILL come back, garanteed)

The new head writer is the creator of "Are you my Mummy" gasmask episodes and the library with the shadow-predators episode. Oh, and the Weeping Angles statue-assassin episode.

My three favourite episodes, actually. And the most "behind the sofa" scary.

Strangely, this.

I've never really thought about it, but Mr Wednesday has summed it up excellently. This is exactly why you should watch Doctor Who, it is a moving drama.

For instance.. In the on New Years Eve this person got stuck in a chamber that was about to flood with radiation. Firstly the barrier between him and the outside world was glass and as we know Gammar Radiation works on an electromagnetic wavelength and can only be stopped by high density materials.. like a lot of lead. They tried to explain how this was special glass that doesnt allow radiation to permiate.. okey ill dig...

They zoom into the person in the glass container and you can clearly see that between the door is a very wide GAP, quite noticeable.. so why have the radiation proof glass?
So yeah, I noticed the gap, which was kind of funny but I don't think it mentioned specifically it was GAMMA (no "r") radiation... also it doesn't really get stopped except by a LOT of lead, but it had to be glass otherwise it'd be pretty fucking hard to film.

Anyway, I watch it for the acting and story. Except for Catherine Tate who I can just about bear because she doesn't have a catchphrase. Besides John Simm was fucking awesome as the Master in that episode. And all the rest of the episodes he was in.

Its become far more child friendly, which is a bad thing.
And there are far too many "We are doomed!" episodes where the villian will be on top for the entire thing then for some fucking retarded reason everything is fine a minute later.
Like the second episode where John Simm was the master and everyone shouts the word doctor and poof! Everything is fine.

That's not the biggest problem with that scene.

The biggest problem is that the perspex box that protects him from Evil Master Rays doesn't block his mobile signal.

Doctor Who is classic. I love it for the same reason I love Pixar films. You can watch it when your 6 or 60, and enjoy it in many different ways. Yes, its not perfect, but thats because it has such a big demographic to cover. It is primarily a kids show, but there are lots of adults who like it too, so some episodes and creatures are retarded (case in point, the Juddoon, space rhynos who speak the least imaginative alien language ever), but they have their classics, like Blink, with the Weeping Angels or the gas mask zombies from series 1. Luckilly, Stephen Moffat, the writer of these episodes, has taken over the show, so hopefully, we'll get some more.

A lot of people have moaned about the New Year episode, and the show in general, but at the end of the day, its the only show where you can see Coronation Street actors playing vampires and the like, and the New Years episode featured Bernard Cribbens on a laser turret. Name ONE show like it.

Bottom line, Doctor Who is the only horror themed show that I can watch with my younger siblings, making it a highlight and probably the only reason to pay for a TV licence.
