I usually like magic-wielding classes, even if they wield magic that lets them hit harder, but there is certainly something satisfying about playing a character who's powerful, not because he can summon fireballs or is really clever, but because he can bash your face in really, really well.

Dragon Age is the only game in recent memory where I've gone for a warrior class, unless you count the Soldier class from Mass Effect.

It's not that I've got anything against the warrior class or anything, but playing as one usually makes me feel like I'm missing out on all the cool toys that the other classes get to play with.

I always prefer the thief/rogue/assassin/stealth class more than any other class but after that I'll take the warrior before the bow and arrows or magic guys

Well Warriors are important... they exist in every fantasy scenario.

I see it like the main helper. A warrior can Tank damage or even protect his teammates. Like his group the warrior is a vital and utterly important teammate in every adventure.

I like to be the warrior. They are brave, know how to fight, and depending of they're karma (good or bad), they will be protective to they're group, or merciless against they're enemies!!!

You have to be more specific about what you're talking about. Warriors differ in many ways in many different games in different genres. I'll just mention a couple specific problems that grind my gears in the wrong direction as well as a reason as to why I just can't bring myself to playing other classes until later on in whichever game I'm playing.

First problem is the typical styled warrior in almost every single mmo out there, the combat rarely changes and when it does it's too little to matter, the actual goal of a warrior or in this case a meat shield doesn't change at all. It's still gain the attention of every living target, tank all it's damage while waiting for your allies to kill them off. Now that is a problem in itself but not as big a problem as it is for a pure damage warrior, you know one of those glass cannons.

To go a pure damage warrior is pretty much a death sentence brought on by a death wish. In most cases if you're trying to solo you're most likely an outcast of society that hates the human race and would rather go everything alone and quit shortly into the game than actually look for a party. However that is also a challenge since no one ever really wants a pure damage warrior because there are other classes that are far better at dealing damage making a pure damage warrior entirely irrelevent.

MMOs have a bad habit of giving slight freedom of how you want to play but then kicking you down and beating you senseless on the ground when you actually get into the game.

Now with that little rant out here comes the up side to playing a pure damage warrior in an mmo. It is the most challenging thing to do. For one you'll have to focus on watching your hp and your mana, avoid getting surrounded and destroyed by respawning aggressive mobs, not have the luxury of ranged attacks, being able to kite damage strong opponents or wipe out so and so with aoe because most of the time you don't get aoe and even if you do the damage is quite weak.

Now games like oblivion and such, they make attempts at making melee tolerable. Personally I've found that two worlds 2 and it's warrior based content is actually a step in the right direction. Hell the combat is a total step in the right direction even with it's flaws, if mages are constantly hit their ability to cast spells that would kill a warrior instantly are rendered irrelevent, rangers arrows don't follow the target like heat seeking missiles giving everyone time to evade, same goes for most spells and even the summons aren't that strong even when massed. Even with that said all classes are balanced.

Speaking of balance I just remembered that most mmos suffer because their classes are not balanced properly, one game I really want to rip on is Luna Online. It has by far the most overpowered mages in any mmo I've play. They can one hit kill everything, have aoe that one hit kills almost everything, has spells then render them invulnerable for a long period of time, heal themselves, tank hard. Pretty much jack of all trades except jack wouldn't be the word I'd use. I'd use something along the lines of juggernaught of all trades of jackass of all trades because they're so god forsakenly unbalanced. And don't get me started on the ignorant people playing that class.

I like being a Warrior. Its just so sweet to clash blades or shields or whatever you have instead of being a pansy. Magic and stealth, pfft.

Rogues and Mages are generally "glass tanks" in that they can dish it out but can't take it. Oh sure they have ways to avoid it through teleportations, magic shields and agileness but if you meet the wrong end of a sword it'll hurt.
Now Warriors on the other hand waltz casually up to the enemy, massive sword in one hand, shield the size of a bus in the other and dressed like a dragon and a tank were fired out of cannons and collided in the middle and laugh in the face of danger, swords and any semblance to speed!
Games where you can create hybrids are even better for Warriors. Grab some magic weapon, shields and lighten armour spells, learn yerself a fireball or two and you're a walking tank with a magic sword, impenetrable shield and the ability to shoot fireballs at anyone who moves outside of your sluggish range.
What's not to love?
I believe you mean "Glass Cannon." But generally a hybrid is what I go for in RPGs, if possible. I always prefer the "Battle Mage" of sorts, over any other character. Whether it's a warrior that can cast magic, or a mage that can fight in close quarters. Even if that fits the name Arcane Warrior, better. I just prefer the name Battle Mage. xD

Nope never a warrior ... On my first playthrough. I prefer glass canon to brink wall. The exception to this is in dark souls , i refused to play a mage because i guessed it was going to be over powered and right i was . I started as a bandit and having no clue what a bandit does , i accidently made him a tank/warrior . I didn't touch magic till i was about soul level 100 and was on my second playthrough . But honestly i always go as mage if i have a choice because i remember the black mage in FF1 being so cool!
i've recently played FF and i have to ask, "are you sure it's the Black Mage class that was cool or are you confusing it with Black Mage of 8-bit theater fame?"

but yeah, they definitely have the highest Cannon:Glass ratio in the entire series...

I think it's a big of a trend of people who like to play as mages as there is for people who like to play as a warrior. Like me for example. I love being a warrior, especially in games like Oblivion and (I expect) Skyrim. There's something so satisfying about being able to rush in and deliver a lightning blow to someone with a longsword, whilst having the visceral feel of dodging, blocking and parrying someone in combat.
I guess a comparison I could pull is that there's just as many people who love lightning-bolting someone from across the map with a sniper rifle as there are CQB hogs who enjoy shotgunning anything that moves within ten feet of them. It's actually funny, really, since in shooters I much prefer sniper rifles, but in RPGs I'll always go the melee combat expert. Hell, I've been playing D&D with my girlfriend and some friends and I just automatically went for a warrior with a longsword.

I guess, there's nothing quite like seeing the whites of your enemy's eyes.

I ALWAYS go with mage because it gives me the most options to mess around and are usually incredibly OP by end game, but I think most people actually prefer the warrior. Look at ME2's stats. More people chose soldier than all other classes combined.

I cannot, off the top of my head, think of a game with a choice of classes or specializations where I really liked the warrior archetype/class. I tend to sneak about in Fallout 3/NV, I always stealth around in Deus Ex, I got so bored with the Soldier class in Mass Effect I quit and switched to Biotic, melee in Oblivion was also soooo dull but then again so was everything else....

Hmm. Let me take a few minutes to think about it.

Ah ha! I've thought of one. Nox [http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/nox] had an enjoyable Warrior class. Bouncing a Conjurer's Force of Nature right back at him and killing not only him but a bunch of people behind him==awesomeness. Nox was a very well-made game with a lot of cool features, some of which I've not seen duplicated since. I kinda wish there'd be a Nox 2 or remake... I lost disc 1 of the two disc set, so I can't even play it solo now. :(

Edit: Oh yeah. In Mount & Blade, I prefer melee because I suck with the ranged weapons. >.>

I love being the unstoppable juggernaut class in games.
Unfortunately, most games don't let you be that unstoppable juggernaut until:
- You are a certain level
- You have certain gear
- You have certain skills/talents
- You get to a certain part of the game

Take Diablo 2 for instance. You have to usually run in and out of combat if you are a melee class, or kite enemies if you are a ranged class, because shit hurts. But when you get to a certain level, or get certain gear, you can just steamroll through everything no matter what.
Or take Oblivion for instance. The first time I played, I was the warrior class, and it was fucking hard. My attacks didn't do much damage, my gear was shit, and repairing it took so long because I had so little money and my skill was crap. But as I got to learn the game, I found out it's best to choose a stealth class first, be a ninja assassin until you get good enough gear and skills, and then you can be the unstoppable juggernaut.

The Warrior is a quintessential character in every game that has classes, because he is the damage soaker and/or primary damage dealer. Most people try to deviate from having warriors or being warriors, because they like thinking differently or doing things differently, because they like the challenge, or have found a better way to do things. But the warrior is still a staple to any game he is in.

To answer your question, I like being the juggernaut more than the warrior, because the juggernaut is what the warrior becomes after a certain while =)

A "berserker" style character is by far my favorite in all Wrpgs. I just like the concept of your rage and anger fueling you to compete with magic wielding people and dragons. It feels innately epic.

This may also have something to do with me being way more into Jrpgs though, since in those the "warrior" or "hero" style char is almost always someone with an epic-looking sword.

Class, generally no. Archtype, in a sense. In RPGs I play the person that wields one sword, not with a shield, not akimbo swords, not a two hander, and not anything that's not a sword; but a sword. And is damn good at using it. Rather than playing as a "Warrior" per say, I play as a Blade Master. And in FPSes, I don't generally play as the Assault, or Soldier class; but I play as the Recon/Pointman class, or Sniper/Marksman class and use them in a very up-front combat-heavy way. For example: Bad Company 2, Recon (Sniper-type class) with a shotgun. And without slugs...I'd prefer Magnum Ammo and more grenades/motion mines or movement speed (Depending on map), thank you.

Why play the sniper in an assault position? Simple: First, he's a Recon, not a Sniper. More fitting. Second, it's an excuse to use a pump-action shotgun and that revolver magnum I love oh-so very very much. Third, I get a gillie suit and what seems like quieter movement noise (I hear it less in-game, and people seem to flip about and blast me while I'm closing distance less often.), so I get the elements of stealth and surprise. Fourth, I get mortars/C4, and that's OK by me. Fifth, motion mines. Beeps whenever there's an enemy in it's radius (Great for making sure bases/houses are clear of bad guys), and you get bonus points if someone kills an enemy in it's radius. With this set-up I get to act like a lone wolf, force multiplier, personal assault, and support operator all in one; and rather effectively, too.

I usually go for a mage with a high damage output. (Red mage or black mage)
If that is overpowered or underpowered, I go for a healer that's not made of glass. (Paladin)
Again, if that's over or underpowered, I go for a warrior with a high damage output. (Warrior?)
I might then try a class with a different or challenging playing style (summoning, stealth, disable/debuff, etc.)
Then everything else. Finally stone wall/tanking kind. I hate them for some unfathomable reason.

I think there is a trend among games with warriors as the easiest character to get used to. Mostly because they have:
Straightforward skills
Good HP amount
Good damage just by throwing normal attacks
Not heavy on active skills
And all that.

I actually hate being a Mage. I think I have a legitimate prejudice against magic users.

That said, I do prefer being a rogue any day of the week. Not necessarily stealthy, but I do enjoy that very much as well. I typically go with Hunter or Ranger types. Guys who just know how to survive. In other words, I tend to play as Bear Grylls.

On the first playthrough of an RPG I'll pick a Warrior-esque class more often than not so that I can "learn the ropes" of the game. But my preferred class is usually a Spellsword or a melee/mage hybrid.
