Warrior's always been my default go-to to come to grips with the game's mechanics, but I generally find myself creating a new, differently-focused character after a few hours of play, once I'm more comfortable with things.

One rare exception to this for me has been in Dark Souls. I started out Warrior, and while I'm primarily a melee-focused character, melee is actually damn fun in this game for me. I won't be changing this character any time soon-- and I've dumped a ton of hours in with him already.

It's got to be the first RPG-styled game I've played in a while where a strong defensive melee is so much fun to play. I feel actively involved in my defensive offense at all times, be it blocking or dodging, parrying/riposting following attacks, or finding the weak side of the thing in front of me. This game's combat system is brilliant, even in its basic simplicity. So much fun.

I normally first play as one to get the ropes of it. Then I might replay as something else, but I find it's a good type to learn mechanics with

Eh. I usually And always start off as the default I'M A WARRIOR/ (in the case of Mass Effect) SOLDIER I JUST PICK UP A WEAPON AND GET TO IT OH AND I WANNA TANK BUT I REALIZE THAT I AM TERRIBLE AT IT SO I BUILD THE TANK UP AND PLAY SOMEONE ELSE.

I usually prefer healing in the long run though. Except in DnD... where i've only had 5 different encounters because everyone could only meet like once a month and then people went back to school. DnD i'm a warlock that despartely wants to either Die or become evil so i can reroll into a rogue.

Me likey da smashy smashy!
Rogues and Mages are generally "glass tanks" in that they can dish it out but can't take it. Oh sure they have ways to avoid it through teleportations, magic shields and agileness but if you meet the wrong end of a sword it'll hurt.
Now Warriors on the other hand waltz casually up to the enemy, massive sword in one hand, shield the size of a bus in the other and dressed like a dragon and a tank were fired out of cannons and collided in the middle and laugh in the face of danger, swords and any semblance to speed!
Games where you can create hybrids are even better for Warriors. Grab some magic weapon, shields and lighten armour spells, learn yerself a fireball or two and you're a walking tank with a magic sword, impenetrable shield and the ability to shoot fireballs at anyone who moves outside of your sluggish range.
What's not to love?

Depends on how it?s done but generally I don?t dislike playing the warrior but prefer to play rouge or mage. If you actually have to doge and block properly then it can be fun but playing a meat shield is boring. I like playing fragile classes and having to move around allot; it keeps you on your toes. I also have a love of traps so tend gravitate towards rouges or rangers.

I don't think this is very fair lol. Tanking is important so sneaky classes and mages don't get pwned. Also how is that really all that different from a mage spamming fireball?

I tend start as a warrior when I play an RPG for the first time so I can get all the cool weapons and armor and get to grips with the mechanics. I gravitate towards debuff or control magic after that.
I do love my fireballs...

They fly so good and make a amazing impact.

They seemed to have the Mage version of Hawke in all the promotions for Dragon Age II. Just saying.

But when done decently, the most basic of classes can still be fun to play.

I'll always go for spellcasters myself, though.

The sword and shield warrior type is one of my favourite classes. It's usually the first thing I make in an RPG. I don't really care for caster classes, which the exception of Paladin. Warrior with a little holy magic still works for me.

I always play tanks in MMO's. I'll usually have a DPS alt or two but my main focus will be my tank/s. My Paladin tank got a little famous on my WoW server for a while. That was a lot of fun. Was a little sad when the dungeon finder put an end to that.

I can understand why people might find them a bit bland but give me a suit of plate armor, a shield and a sword/mace/hammer over a staff and robe any day.

As for modern settings, I tend to gravitate to the rifleman template. Pistol, assasult rifle, a couple of grenades, medium body armor and decent mobility.

I ALWAYS play a tank in fantasy RPGs. I love swords and shields and giant hammers. Dragon Age was pretty much my wet dream. So yes... yes I play warriors.

It depends on the game, but in the vast majority of RPGs, I almost exclusively play the warrior equivalent. The only RPG in recent memory I did not do so was Human Revolution. Dragon Age, Fallout, Oblivion, MMOs, etc are all played as beefy tank motherfuckers that hit things in the face.

The only time I divert from that is if I perceive the game to be stealth focused. Deus Ex's mechanics were specifically designed for stealth, or so it seems to me, and so I played stealthy.

Only in poorly designed games. In well designed games, the art of closing in to make the kill, as well as the actual mechanics of the fighting itself can make the class very compelling.

If the warrior is a dumb job spamming autoattack, play a better game.

In general I prefer the rogue class, nothing beats the satisfaction of successfully sneaking up on an enemy and dealing an automatic critical, or maneuvering through the fray of combat to eliminate the enemy spellcaster. Sorry, the meatshield has just never appealed to me. Though I will admit, I also enjoy playing a battlemage, as my main character in oblivion will profess.

You grab a square of metal. A sharpened thingy, and you charge a 10000 foot tall demon-elder-godbeast why everyone puts magic spells on you. Yes its fun.

Or you can be the dual wield type and slaughter things by the billions.

Not a class I play all the time, but I usually have 1 in every mmo.

Yo be honest I don't like melee classes at all, I'd rather be mage in everything, dragon age, world of warcraft, crimson alliance, it's fine when I have no other option but I really just prefer spell casters and standing in the back throwing fire at stuff and trying not to get myself killed.

Yeah I play warrior, not all the time though. Sure magic and stealth are cool, but sometimes it just feels better to smash something to death with a big sword, instead of standing further back out of the action spamming projectiles or just hiding in the shadows. Thats how it is for me anyway.

Unless it's a game like Fallout 3 where melee combat is fooking stupid, I'll always strive to find the biggest nastiest weapon I can and introduce it to the faces of everything I come across.
And this as well, trying to punch a Deathclaw in the face has killed me more often that I can remember...

It depends on how the Warrior is represented, in games like Aion and WoW they're meatheads that can leap 10 meters in the air, relentlessly tearing the shit out of anything in front of them. I like that representation, they're more barbaric and badass. I agree in some games they're dull, there's nothing really special about them, or at least not to the extent of a Rogue or Mage. I'd like to see more games giving Warriors that brutal, Viking-like representation. Until then, I'll continue to make Rogues/Archers.

It all comes down to play mechanics. When all characters essentially operate off the same engine, it just comes down to the combination of effective power, versatility, and visual/thematic appeal. Warriors are typically moderate/low/low on that scale.

Classes should function in fundamentally different ways for equitable appeal. Warriors could function more like a cross between God of War and Dynasty Warriors; wading into combat and just wiping the floor with fast-paced wide-angle attacks and trigger-button combos for "cutscene-ish" special attacks. Rogues could function like a Tactical Stealth game where you're actually trying to avoid combat and go for instant-kill sneak attacks and beat the boss by reaching the magical weak spot inaccessible to other classes. Mages could be an action-puzzle game where you actively arrange glyphs for magic effects both in combat and for more advanced environmental exploration. Ranged classes would function like a FPS. So on and so forth.

I feel people like being archers because it relates to sniping in a way I guess. Magic does not appeal to me at all. Recently since I disowned my love for snipers and replaced it with everlasting hate for them I have been using warrior classes more in RPG games and now use machine guns in CoD and Battlefield.
