No, no, not Extraordinary Gentlemen. This, on the other hand, is one of my all time favourite British sitcoms. If you've never seen it, rectify that immediately. It's a deranged sitcom that combines sketch comedies, the typical dry wit of Britcoms, and horror. It can be as creepy as it can be funny.

And the main cast consists of three actors - Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton - playing almost a hundred roles each. It's incredible.

Here's hoping I'm not alone in my love for absurd, dark, British sitcoms about inbred serial killers who run a local shop for local people, an immortal travelling ringmaster in blackface, a drug dealer butcher, a family of toad obsessed psychos with extreme OCD...

Really? You thought it was good? It was an absolutely horrid adaptation of the graphic novel... and most who've read the graphic novel would probably agree. I thought it was a *meh* movie at best... ah well, that's just me though.

I loved that it was "horrid" - in the sense of being gross, dark, bizarre and had no time for political correctness whatsoever -, it's the sort of show you'd never see here in North America, where the vast majority of sitcoms are about pretty middle class white people getting into relationships and crap.

For me, the comedy I like is Yes, Minister and its ilk... blatant satire etc. Most of the current comedies currently on air in the UK, I'm rather ambivalent towards. *shrug* Ah well... *goes back to reading* ...(!!)

The best thing of all, is that YM & YPM are barely more than mild caricatures of what the civil service/government dynamic is really like. The Thick of It, in some ways, is actually a bigger caricature, even though it appears more 'candid'.

You know, I've been meaning to get into The Thick of It. Is it any good, is it worth watching? Or is it too similar to Yes, Minister that it can be sort of detracting from its actual quality?

Yeah...it even got a mention in WHFB, Roistone-Vasey (or whatever it was) is a town in Sylvania in one of the Vampire Counts books.

I only ever saw bits of it, and I didn't think it was funny at all, nor particularly daring. Shock humour is the basis for American teen comedies, after all, and they pump those out year after year.

Always saw it as less shock humour and more playing with the sliding scale of comedy and horror, myself.

Freaking loved this show. Creepy and cringey, and very British. I loved the vet character, although he got a bit predictable after a while, the scene with the two sheepdogs killed me.

The Apocalypse movie was utter bollocks though. Tarnished their good reputation somewhat with that.

Oh yes I do remember that series. It was very special for me to watch it as only a certain german tv channel woul show it very late at night just before they switched their place with a childrens channel.
yeah I watched it in german and it was one of the first series I tried to watch in english, its not good for starting with that...

I do remember it yeah but I was too young to really get it. I thought it was funny cause of how silly I thought it was but I probably couldn't appreciate it for what it actually is.

They're very different. Where YM/YPM is genial and witty, tToI is crass and arrogant (in that caricatured way). Where YM/YPM is civil and high brow, tToI is confrontational and blunt to the point of being quite base.

The Thick of It is still quite funny, though I don't find it, personally, as funny as YM/YPM. However, it's still one of the best TV comedies in recent years, IMO. It doesn't rely on wordplay as much, and has more shock value, but it just drips with cynicism and the driest of dry sarcasm you can't help but snigger. And a lot of laughs come from 'holy shit, she actually went and said it!'
