I like metal mostly and I really cannot stand mainstream pop. Lots of people that I've talked to like that kind of music, though. Often it's just one hit song or whatever.

I prefer the 70s and 80s music that my parents listen to than mainstream music. After a while, The Bee Gees start sounding okay.

Yes I do like mainstream music to a degree, it just at the moment there is little to no music of genres I like in the mainstream while at the same time there are alot of styles of music that are in the mainstream that I cannot stand, so I end up looking like the pretentious indie guy who doesn't enjoy anything :(

Actually I'll listen to anything I find pleasing regardless of age and genre, though I tend to lean more towards various Rock and Blues styles of music.

Pop is played at dances because it's a lot easier to dance to then some other genres. And most people don't mind pop, neither like it overly much or hate it.

I like rock and metal and am only slightly surprised that everyone else seems to also... There are some pop songs I like, but most of the stuff I don't.

No reason, just noticed. Haven't been around as much since my son was born.
I remember when you were the guy who would post among the first 3 on any given thread.

Cheers!

I don't see "mainstream". If I like it, I like it. If I don't I don't. Simple as that....I don't go around thinking I'm cooler than everybody else because I know a band or group that not many people know or just started to catch on to.

This has always struck me as odd when it comes to the club scene. There's a wealth of good drum & bass kind of stuff out there that's actually good, but they insist on playing the same banal garbage night in, night out,

That said, Pendulum and Infected Mushroom would probably attract a lot of hallucinatin' folk, which could be bad for business.

I prefer classic and modern heavy metal, rock, and hard rock with a healthy side serving of electronic based music, both classic and modern and avoid the transfats that are modern pop.

I'll listen to almost anything, but the majority of music I listen to is rock. I've found that some pop can be good, especially if someone's made a PMV about it.

These days, it is tough to say what the "mainstream" is even composed of. Since audiences have become fragmented to the absolute nth degree, there are too many sub-genres of sub-genres to choose from and these days almost no one specific band or singer takes home the majority of the pie, even amongst the most popular. I generally don't listen to basic radio, but even that medium has some good stations with interesting content, provided you're in a big city. So which ones are mainstream? All of them? Some of them? I'm not sure.

Regardless, "mainstream" is, to a degree, subjective. Depending on which circles you hang about in, some might consider some bands to be "mainstream" for that genre or habitus, even if others might not. For instance, I like a few indie bands from the Montreal based Arts and Crafts label. Most of that music is classified as indie, but it still does quite well in Canada (in terms of sales and airplay), thanks in part to CanCon laws that allow our bands to get automatic coverage. Some might say that is mainstream music. Others, who are less familiar with the genre, might not.

TL;DR, depends on who you ask.

I don't often listen to the "mainstream" genres such as rap/pop but I often listen to the more popular bands in the genres I do like. I don't care if something is popular as long as it's good. I listen to Metal a lot, usually Iron Maiden, Coheed and Cambria, Dream Theatre, Metallica and Megadeth, a few of which are as mainstream as metal can get, really. In classical music, I listen to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Holste etc. I listen to electronic music sometimes; I like Anamanaguchi. I also like some classic rock. Even then I do have some mainstream pop artists that I like (Lady Gaga, for instance).

I voted metal, but my favourite Genres of music right now are punk, power metal, and progressive metal; with my 3 favourite bands right now being Rise Against, Sonata Arctica, and Dream Theater.

I can't stand 99% of mainstream music, because I look towards songs with meaning and value to their lyrics, as well as sounding really good/cool, and showing musical talent. Modern mainstream pop has exactly 0 of these aspects.

I agree, mainstream artists like Adele are shit. She's a talentless cow who needs to go away.

OH WAIT.

Well, it's all hollow and homogenous. It's not like we could see a mixing of a popular house DJ and a popular R&B singer.

OH WAIT.

I put electronic, since I love dubstep and anything that mixes rock and electronic, but my range really goes from the hardest of rocks to the most European of technos. Overall, I lean slightly more electronic than rock, but I'm still deep in the alternative music genre.

I dig old school hip hop too, but not the pseudo-rap bullshit that's on these days. Party music is cool, but not when there are assholes like Pitbull singing during it. Either stick to rap or die, talentless hack.
