While i might not agree with her taste in fashion or her mannerisms, NO ONE can deny she certainly knows her instruments VERY well and is clearly, a very qualified musician.

I'm one of her little monsters.

No, I don't adore all of her songs(some are fucking awful), my absolute favorite is Born This Way because of it's message and it's catchy, but she's a very good performer(has some of the best music videos out there, Bad Romance makes me jizz in my artistic pants) and supports good causes while being very outspoken about it.

So yes, I like Lady GaGa.

She's better than most other pop-stars, but at best i'm fairly apathetic towards her music.

I probably sound like an old man, but I have no use for most pop music today. It's mechanical and soulless and stands for nothing but having a good time, and I was never really into party music, even when I was younger. I preferred Ozzy to Van Halen, for example. I think there is plenty of good music out there, and I have found it, but very little of it can be found on a Billboard chart.

That said, I like about half of Gaga's stuff. She tends to use more interesting beats and riffs than most of today's pop artists--I include "Judas" here. I know she has musical talent, because I've seen her old Stefanie Germanotta videos on YouTube. Also some of her songs are actually about something. I agree with the Nostalgia Chick that Gaga could write better, more meaningful songs if she wanted to, but is shrewd enough to know she wouldn't be anywhere near as successful. She's making a cynical commentary on modern pop music, and being a cynic about modern pop, I appreciate the sentiment.

I am kind of depressed that Lady Gaga is seen as "controversial" when she hasn't done anything Madonna didn't already do 25 years ago. That says to me that cultural progress has backslid or stayed the same, which frightens me.

(Incidentally, I grew up on classical, swing, thrash and goth metal, goth-industrial and the whole early 90s grunge/alt-rock era.)

I actually liked Bad Romance, Paparazzi and Poker Face, but I didn't start to hate her until after she flipped out over Weird Al.

[sub]I can still like her ass, right?[/sub]
Did you read the conclusion to that story? http://www.torontosun.com/2011/07/15/weird-als-gaga-feud-a-short-one
Turned out it was her sucky manager that apparently turned it down, but he got help from people online and she let him have it on her album.

OT: I do like her a lot. Maybe not 'love' (yet) but give me time. I think she's actually talented unlike the shite that's out at the minute. I respect her for writing her own stuff (inb4: omG!! she doesn't!!!one1!!) like I do with any musician who write their own songs. I like how she's trying to get jazz popular again with The Edge of Glory too.
I don't join in with the over the top worshiping thing though.

I like a lot of her music (it's catchy), and her crazy, uh, ness. I also enjoyed the Paparazzi music video solely for Alexander Skarsgard and I loved her Alejandro video, for basically everything.

I'm no fan of hers, but I don't think she's bad. Seriously, does no one else remember the days when the radio divas were Britney, over-the-hill Madonna, J-Lo, and Christina Aguilera? And Smash Mouth was everywhere too...

Be thankful for what you have today. It could be much worse.

I'd argue it really hasn't, you're just looking from the wrong angle..

There has been a massive change in the years between Madonna and Gaga, but I'll sum it up in one literary movement. Queer Theory. Basically, people, gays and lesbians in particular, looked intently for the first time at how visual style is gendered and concluded, ultimately, that all clothing was essentially a drag performance. You determine who you are in the social world by controlling what you wear.

I'm summarizing and not doing a very sophisticated movement justice. But I don't want to go on and on about it.

Dressing up has been a part of music for a long time, it's true. But do you think Madonna could ever have dressed in ways which deliberately undermined her own sex appeal? Could she have bound her breasts to make herself look more flat-chested than she was? Could she have used contouring makeup? Could she have dressed like a stereotypical femme (in chains) and had a video in which she made out with some kind of revamped butch icon? Could she have framed an entire video around the concept of her being seriously disabled? Could she have openly acknowledged a rumour that she had a penis by thrusting her crotch at the camera?

Noone could have done, not until the mid-90s. In fact, a good example of how far we've come is how much this very obvious gender fucking (which is really obvious when you think about it) can slip under the radar.

She's crap.

I mean, I've passed my "fuck all mainstream music" phase so I do enjoy some stuff by Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse, Scissor Sisters (lol), Katy Perry etc among my usual heavy stuff, but Lady Gaga's music isn't particularly interesting even in pop music terms (especially on her most recent album) and she pretty much just recycles her image and fashion from previous people, most notably Madonna of course. And her over-the-top risque presence is only a continuing publicity stunt.

To be fair i've heard worse.

I'll never go to one of her concerts but her music is tolerable.

It could be worse .... these 2 could have made it big and still be going now..

The horror.....
Urgh, Daphine, and Celeste.

The Ear torture that those group of girls gave me when I was younger was terrible, never again.

I personally have a rather big love, and hate affair with lady Gaga. I mean, her music is good enough, it's easy to listen to, and it has a lot going for it, especially in this me too pop scene nowadays. What I don't like about her however, is her (like many other female artists) who have a notion that sex sells, and this isn't always the case at all. It's rather degrading, and I feel that it destroy's respectability in female artist's, and in their music in general.

*Point's to Avatar* For example, I'm a huge fan of the LA All-Female indie band Warpaint. They are not as popular as say Lady Gaga, but they have a huge growing number of fans who like their music. They are an extremely unfashionable bunch of girls, but they seriously don't give two shit's. They continue to make good music regardless of their different approach to their music when compared to other female artist's. They have the notion of "the music comes first", and I respect them greatly for it, and I feel that many female artist's (pop music, or not) should follow this example.

It's not just because pop music has always been like this. I mean, I can name a few female pop artist's who haven't resorted to their sexuality to sell albums (Lily Alen, and Amy Winehouse for example). Women like Lady gaga also don't make good role models for young girls. Mainly because that it might make them think that to get anywhere in adult life, you need to be an anorexic, boob flashing whore. I personally feel that people such as Lily Alen, or a band such as Warpaint, will make better role models to young females than people like Lady Gaga or Rihanna.

To me, my dislike for Lady Gaga goes beyond her music, and more about what she stands for in music culture in general.
