I've read one fanfic and that was My Immortal.

Best worst thing ever.

I used to, but I've stopped reading them for some time now. It really is hard to find any of good quality, but when you do find one...

Ive read a few, mostly the old fable game but some STALKER/minesweeper as well.
People Probably avoid them because they get so much stick, plus not many fanfic sites keep all of the crap/needs a NSFW sticker on them.

The best any only one I have ever read is 30H

So very funny and random, a lot of swearing though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2V4VxlsMuQ4&feature=player_embedded#!

Best thing, its put under "Angst and romance" in the website it was posted in.

After this: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5979358/1/Drifting I found a new love for fanfiction.

He's a really good author, but damn, I've found so many other great FF's after my interest was peaked.

So I guess yes, I read them.

I read them from time to time but it's tedious when sifting through the shit to find the gold. I suppose when you find a truly decent fanfic it makes it worthwhile.

I actually wrote some Zelda fanfiction when I was about ten years old. I found it and read it again recently. It was definitely not my finest hour.

Totally agree.
Don't forget DOOM: Repurcussions of Evil!

Do completed Roleplays Count as Fanfics? Some of the ones i've helped write here on the Escapist are very well written and are worth publication even.

The better question would be "Who on the Escapist WRITES fanfics?"

How.... is there an Other in the poll? This seems really black and white.

OT: I read them. I write them too, from time to time.

I find it really difficult to appreciate fanfiction due to my pedantic nature. Most fanfic writers have a tendency to take some liberties with the characters when they use characters from the universe they're fanfic-ing - which, in itself, is something I find annoying - (changing their attitudes, personalities etc.) and some of this is just due to their writing style, but it's something I find irritating. Other times they get really tiny details wrong and it drives me insane.

Other times they're just complete, unadulterated shit written by a total idiot.

The issue with fanfiction is that the writer needs to take a hell of a lot of care with the subject and avoid consistency errors with the actual universe (i.e making sure that nothing written contradicts the actual story) as well as writing the characters well and ensuring that the story has something unique to it (as in they're not just creating a carbon copy of a story in the actual universe). The problem with this is that the only people who will generally bother to take such delicate care with their fanfiction are obsessives, and if a fanfiction is written by someone who obsesses over the series or whatever it will generally be difficult to avoid said fanfiction tipping into the realms of self-insert Mary Sue characters.

Okay, I mentioned earlier that I'd written a fanfic, so I may as well post it here...

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6535664/1/Memories

And don't worry, there aren't any sort of crazy crack pairings or anything, just two friends/comrades-in-arms relieving their previous battles and experiences. Unlike most fanfic writers, I take my writing seriously, even the non fanfic stuff, thank you very much. Though it's unknown when I'll get around to updating this, as I do have a lot on my plate at the moment, almost constantly...

I read fanfiction because some of the fan work is better then real novels I read today. Besides, often after finishing a game I like, I always want more of the characters because I grow attach to them.
If anyone here is a fan of Assassin's Creed, I highly recommend LadyVe on Deviantart. Her writing is amazing and it's not like other fanfiction. There is a sense of maturity behind it and the characters are rarely OC. It much better then the crap novels Ubisoft released for the games.
