Mostly doesn't bother me because I'm not hung up on it. I probably don't even notice for the most part. Text speak however annoys me to death. I know it's not strictly the same thing but this whole discussion reminded me of this paragraph:
"I cnduo't bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. Unisg the icndeblire pweor of the hmuan mnid, aocdcrnig to rseecrah at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mttaer in waht oderr the lterets in a wrod are, the olny irpoamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rhgit pclae. Yes, because the internet is starting to go into texting zone of misspelling every word for zero convience. Texting works on phones for one reason, you don't have all your speed with your fingers, only your thumb, making fast texting with correct punctuation and what not somewhat redundant and more or less not wanted. However with a computer, there are tools available to cancel out this effect, and everyone at some age learned how to type properly would know that its quicker to type out the full sentence then to not do so and text it out. The reason that its faster to type out a full sentence then to text it out is the fact that you have full hand to completely spell, while texting is thumb based.
Main reason it pisses me off is because the computer LITERALLY tells you when you misspell a word, and its easy as pissing to spell correctly using the computer. Internet should be safe from this taint.
Only when they do not try. I mispell alot. Either because I am typing fast (or angry) or because I do not know how to spell a word. When people are just being lazy (txt talk) however, it pisses me off. (More so because pop music is promoting it now too, and rap always has)
It depends. Typos I can abide, because everyone mistypes at some point. Although it is easy enough to read back through your post before you submit it, so there should be minimal mistakes.
But when people confuse there, their and they're, or to, too and two, I get annoyed, because I see that as basic errors that can easily be avoided. But overall, if the post is understandable, I don't get too worked up over it.
No, of course not. When it is so bad I can't even tell what words people are saying, then it slightly irritates me, but any other time I just don't care. It's not something to get worked up about in my opinion.
It doesn't annoy me too much, as long as you can understand what they're saying and you can assume it was just a typo. What irritates me more is when I see someone making the same mistake over and over without learning. My particular pet peeve is incorrect use of "they're", "there" and "their". It really isn't difficult! A friend of mine always writes "loose" when he mean "lose", despite then number of times I've attempted to correct him. Although I do enjoy it when he refers to someone as a "looser". Haha.
As an English gent, it also doesn't bother me when Americans alter the language (as it does many others). Obviously the language evolves and that's fine. But it irritates me when English people use Americanisms, either in speech or written. Ass instead or arse, trunk instead of boot. Fine if an American says it, infuriating if an English person says it (to me!)
I think it shows that the poster actually thought about their post. Does it bother me when someone doesn't know how to spell a complicated word or adds in an extra vowel accidentally? Nah. It's the thought that counts. (Though I do hang out on a lot of primarily british forums, they tend to be better at grammar and spelling than us Americans.)
If I know what they mean it really doesn?t bother me. I think it?s pretty sad to correct other people's small errors.
It would be like an annoying smartass guy in your group who keeps correcting grammar while having conversations.
I also hate it when, in a thread mostly, someone is just clearly speed tying to counter-act an argument and in their haste there's a typo. And of course the smartass focuses on the typo instead of his reasonably valid argument, even though it was clear what that guy meant.
I hate when someone types "your" as "you're" and vice-versa. It just renders their argument invalid for me, no matter what they are saying. I am Russian and I type better than someone whose native language is English!? Something must be wrong here!
Other than that, I don't mind typos (though I do try to correct mine, as opposed to 90% of the people), unless they render the post unreadable.
I only react to stupid mistakes like "They're, their and there", but typos usually go unnoticed by me. I try my best to use proper grammar though, I feel that people take me more seriously that way.
Bad spelling and punctuation annoys me yes. It all depends though. If the person writing is dyslexic, tired, not a native speaker, drunk - then I understand why their spelling is all over the place.
As others have pointed out, language is not static; it's a living thing. It changes and grows and nitpicking over things like American vs British spelling is pointless. Both are correct. Makes me wonder if European Spanish and South American Spanish have the same fight going on. I prefer British spelling, but I'm not going to penalise an American for spelling colour "wrong".
Texting abbreviations are fine to use if used sparingly, and in MMOs I totally understand why you can't write everything out all the time - I'm a slow typer myself =P - and I'm not that bothered with the occasional 1337 speak. I use it myself sometimes for the lulz.
However, I do think you can make a bloody effort in making yourself understandable. If you're bothering to make a post you obviously want people to hear you, listen to you and, in a sense, see you. If your post looks like this:
hi guys i saw this graet game today i think your giong too laik it y not clik teh link and cheek it out its the best gaem ever srsly i had so much fun to play it and its so gross but its hilareous
(et cetera)
... then why on earth would I want to play this game that you're promoting? Or whatever it is you're writing about.
Typos happen even with a spell checker (they're not perfect). But if you're obviously putting as little effort as possible in your communication with the rest of us, then personally, 8 times out of 10, I can't be arsed to care about what you have to say.
What's that saying? "70 percent of what people react to is how you look; 20 percent is how you sound; and only 10 percent is what you say." There's probably an equivalent to writing; something like, "70 percent is your grammar and punctuation; 20 percent is how you spell; and only 10 percent is what you write." Or something like that.
TL;DR: Yes, I find it annoying with a few exceptions.

Yes. It really, really annoys me. Checking your own posts isn't that hard to do, and it makes it much easier for the rest of us to understand what you're trying to say. But spelling doesn't bug me as much as punctuation. If I tried to type an entire post that neglected to use any commas or periods or anything and expected you to understand it at a glance that would be really hard and unfair we would be unable to tell what you are saying and it just adds unnecessary confusion to an otherwise easy post so basically what I am saying is use proper spelling and whatnot it isn't that hard and more people will take you seriously and actually read to the end of you post and you would be a better person for it.
I kind of have to pick you up on this and I feel that irony is pretty much what is going to drive this thread. But because you fell into the punctuation catagory. I felt I should let you know that your last sentence should be split into 2. Don't hold it against you or anything, just thought it was funny.
(Uh-Oh 13th post. *holds on to horseshoe* Not a triskaidekaphobic or anything. >.>)
Well, for me it's all about context. Whenever I talk to my friends over an instant messenger we sometimes default to our own bastardized version of the English language just for the fun of it. It's what we call "Derpy English".
For example:
"Wen yew tahp owt yer sentenses lahk dis ownly yewzing teh fownetick spellerings."
It's basically to highlight the point that what you're saying isn't serious, since sarcasm doesn't translate well into plain text alone. So I don't mind bad spelling if it's on purpose and has a reason or some form of logic behind it. However, its when people are too lazy to type out full words is when I get a little bit irritated; like when people type "U2" instead of "you too".
I'm also fine with acronyms, I use them all the time and they're a great time saver for when you are repeating something with a long name and need to shorten it down to make re-typing it easier. Like when you type Devil May Cry for the first two times, then shorten it down to DMC to save you having to type it out completely and still get your message across.
Yes, it bugs me. There is no logical reason to not spell correctly - Your lives aren't so important to warrant not spending a fraction of a second spelling like a human being.
Obviously, it's no big deal if English isn't their mother tongue. That's fair enough.
