Abso-friggin-lutely it does. I buy games for the single player. Multiplayer is hit or miss mostly thus far. I love the MP in Uncharted 2, but found it lacking in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. But as far as the campaigns go, I loved them both. So for me, it's about 90% about campaign, 10% multiplayer.

Me and my friends were getting in a argument recently about whether campaign really matters anymore to make a game great. The argument was about the soon to be released Modern Warfare 3 and I was wondering that if all the developers working on it will actually spend as much time on it as they should. Having a Xbox myself I was always into the more of the story myself but he honestly doesn't care. His opinion is that it doesn't even need a campaign as long as the multiplayer is good. However, I strongly disagree as I always play the campaign first and always go back to it. I am not saying that a game with a bad story is bad, just not great. Please post of all your responses in the poll and I would love to hear your feedback.
Thanks.
I notice whenever I get a new Call of Duty game for example I go straight to competitive multiplayer. I will play it for weeks upon weeks before I even bother with the campaign. I play through it once just for the sake of doing so and rarely touch it again. Because my playtime on the campaign is such a small percentage compared to how long I spend on multiplayer, I could probably go without it.

Well yes since not everyone have online access to multiplayer so campaign have to make up for that unless the game is internet only like Team Fortress 2.

If you mean the single-player campaign, certainly it matters.

I like an evening where I can actually get into a game without being shouted at for being a noob.

Immersion in an atmosphere is somewhat lost when you can hear/read people going on about what happened on SGU last night.

I play multiplayer so preposterously rarely, largely due to my crappy internet, but also for the reasons listed above.

I don't really care for multiplayer in most games; if there's no good SP campaign I won't buy the game.

If you're gonna add a campaign mode then you better damn well make sure it's good. Or they could just be honest with themselves and not have a campaign mode anymore and make it multiplayer only and drop the price.

That's my thought about games that have multiplayer. If the single player is terrible I'm not gonna waste my money that obviously is selling for the multiplayer.

Many big budget games have no multiplayer so for them it would be all that mattered other than mods.

Personally I think the Call of Duty story lines are fun as hell to play but not the best. I'm currently enjoying Crysis 2's campaign it's spectacular. YES campaign matters if you buy a game and only play multiplayer you are firstly a bit of a douche...seriously.... Some poor sod put effort into that story and you're playing the multiplayer which has more flaws and problems than...a thing with a lot of problems (drew a blank there). Play campaign it's an essential part to the game besides you'll find that a lot of maps are based on campaign (although I guess it could be the other way around but makes more sense for maps to be based on campaign)

Come for the campaign, stay for the multiplayer- unless the campaign is so good that I don't stop playing that. So, you see, campaign is more important. I would much prefer a game with no multiplayer but a great campaign over a game with no campaign but great multiplayer.

I'll only even play coop online multiplayer anymore, and even then, only occasionally. If you don't have a story, and I paid more than $10 for your game, the campaign is going to be more or less the only thing I judge it on, no matter the budget or genre.

Unless they make MW3 entirely Multiplayer, then a single player campaign is important. Even though they are getting smaller each year, there are plenty of people that will not play multiplayer.

That is the main reason why I hate Starcraft II. I do not give a shit about what people say, the game is only a third finish. I like having a story in my games. I am not interested in perfecting my strategy to the point that it is rote memory. I want to know how the Protoss and Zerg are doing after the last game. I am not paying full price for a game that was a third of the way done.

Yes, even in cod, the campaign is awesome. Although, im not a fan of bfbc2s campaign. The characters are unintresting.
Agreed. Even though CoD's stories are now completely outrageous, they've got a certain charm to them.

Bad Company 2's characters are way too heavily exaggerated, and just reek of trying too hard.

The game I'm making is multiplayer only, because I don't have the time/patients to make a story. (Though I might make a free story only chapter based thing later on) But the game is based on a book that I'm writing, that has a really diverse story...

But story really does matter in games that will include it. I love COD campaigns, there just too short... maybe I should have a COD marathon- and then maybe it will size up to a normal campaign...

but with games like Mass Effect, story is the only reason for it.

So yeah, Campaign good.
