So guys. Ive been thinking. Does the color of certain things matter at all? For exmaple clothes. Lets say I wear a green shirt. Does it matter that its green in any way? Or its just to make it look nicer?

And for example.....a chair. Lets say Im sitting on a red chair right now. Does it matter at all that its red?

Personally, I think the color of things doesnt matter at all, only makes things look nicer and more colorful.

Are we talking about colour as an experience here? Because there is a common and interesting philosophical question as to weather the colours that you see are the same ones that I see.

And If that is the case then no it might not matter what colour things are.

We do however project meaning onto colours - traditionally red is passionate, blue is calming and white is pure for example. You might balk a bright red wedding dress which in my mind suggests that it does indeed matter what colour things are. So there you have my vote

Well 1 color on 1 object might not matter, but I know a few people who would have an issue if you wore that green shirt with bright red pants.

Unless you have black and white vision, colour most definately matters. Colour can work inviting, distracting, or offensive.

If you do an interior redesign of your room and make everything black and red, it's going to seriously effect your mood.

In the same way you can ruin a whole movie just by colouring it off. Imagine if Darth Vader was pink or yellow...

An awful lot of that would be cultural, though, learned associations with colour.

If someone were to try and get me to wear a pair of lime green jeans... I... I think I might hurt them.

Maybe, but much of it is also imprinted by nature; The sky is blue, blood is red. And so we associate colours like light blue with something soothing, and dark red with anger or pain.

Depends on the thing in question. If my urine was neon pink or my blood was emerald green I might want to see a doctor. But then something else like the colour of a bag doesn't matter.

Depends on your definition of "mattering". You say colour "only makes things look nicer". Well, it matters a lot to me how nice things look. Colour probably won't bring world peace or solve any economic problems but it is going to be the deciding factor in my next clothing purchase and can quite possibly influence my first impression of a person I just met.

The always applicable answer: depends!

I'm colourblind (not fully, I do see some colours), and my roommate has been commenting on the fact that I not only percieve colours differently, but don't "use" them the same way he does.

Example, my car is (bright) red, whenvere we're heading for the car my roommate will scan for colour first, and shape second. I will scan for my car's shape first, colour second or maybe even third (after license plate or something). And red is a colour I can see... (be it somewhat altered...)

Colour indeed does matter, as it acts as a signifying mark to our psyche, every time we see a colour of a different sort, or a combination of colours it causes some effect, even if we don't acknowledge it.

You can tell an entire story just using colours, how you wear your clothes, what colours you bear, and how you combine them, is an expression of your personality, and it acts as a set of visual clues to others' subconscious mind as to your role, your personality, and how to interact with you.

So yeah, colours matter, in clothing, construction, interior decorating, vehicular identification, everything.

That's a very good example of how colours can completely alter perception. Colourblindness is actually an advantage when it comes to camouflage because you primarily look for shapes and not colour contrast.
On the other hand food colouring plays a big part in compelling you to be more avoiding.
And as with every effect in psychology, there's <url=http://www.csulb.edu/web/journals/jecr/issues/20102/paper2.pdf>colour-based marketing.

So is colour important? I think I've made my case.
If everyone starts only wearing red from now on just remember me as its prophet.

Well yeah it does. I don't like some colours... I don't like to wear blue very much for example, but I like to wear green, purple, red, black, etc. I also don't like wearing white...
