What I fucking hate is the modern conception that fanservice is somehow a genre unto itself and that shows in this genre (i.e Maids Versus Butlers, KissXSis etc) don't need anything else. This is garbage. Fanservice is OK as a bonus (Evangelion) or when the series doesn't feel the need to make a big deal out of it or draw attention to it (Spice & Wolf) but when a series has literally nothing to it but wall-to-wall fanservice then the end is nigh.
KissXSis especially is possibly the worst anime series EVER MADE as a result of this and the concentrated embodiment of everything that is wrong with the modern anime industry. What's it about? A high school boy has 2 stepsisters who want to fuck him. The end. That's it. That is LITERALLY the whole point of the series- these two teenage sluts throwing themselves at their brother (because incest is HOT)... sorry I mean their STEPbrother (because REAL incest is too controversial and might have to be taken seriously a la Koi Kaze, which is actually a really good series) and there's steaming great mountains of explicit fanservice and semi-sexual activities. And yet for all that, they never actually HAVE SEX, partly because that kind of development would actually involve PLOT and developing RELATIONSHIPS and CHARACTERS and partly because the creators apparently want you to believe this is a "REAL anime" and not just a cheap hentai. No. I've seen real hentai better than this. The writing is a joke, the plot is non-existant, the characters are lame and the "humour" is worse. This is a series with LITERALLY no redeeming features which thinks that merely fanservice is enough to make it worthwhile. Worst of all is the number of drooling retards who actually LIKE this stuff, which only encourages anime companies to make more cheap, shoddy garbage like it, rather than the kind of intelligent series which used to be the rule rather than the exception.
So while fanservice in and of itself is not inherently bad, these days it seems no-one knows how to use it properly or with the slightest restraint and it's choking the life out fo the industry.
