Hardcore to me equals having to use your headbone while playing. While I love FPS's, most nowadays require little thinking and are nothing but running around shooting everything that moves, or doesn't. The games psrdirector mentioned are along the lines of what i'm talking about. IMO playing a game and becoming really good at it doesn't make you a hardcore gamer, which is a stupid phrase to begin with, what's so hardcore about pushing buttons real good like?

No. I don't like most of the games that people call hardcore. There is too much unnecessary violence in games at the moment. I enjoy playing many shooters, but I find that the newer ones focus too much on showing blood and gore flying around in ever improving graphics. I don't think it adds to most games.

If you take most modern shooters (and RPGs as well) they are very much focussed on the blood, organs and unmentionables that are being blown all over the place. It seems to be the focus of most horror games now, instead of the atmosphere. I personally think that it detracts from the other gameplay aspect of many games and does not at all help the cause in Australia. It could be that a little self censorship is required or better still focus on something other than graphics.

The exception to this could be L4D2. That game has dismemberment, body parts flying around and blood covering the screen all over the place. It does it in a way that is entertaining and based around good gameplay, good narrative (feel free to disagree with me here but I think it shows valves classic tactic of putting the story in the game for you to find rather than spelling it out) and good interaction between players. The focus is not on the gore, although it is there, but on the game as a whole.

No, just look at these RPGs and the such. Or even Assassin's creed 1+2. Sure, AC2 had a gun, but that doesn't count, does it?

Any way, I'm pretty sure things like Oblivion, Dragon age, AC1+2, and many other games are classed "hardcore" without the presence of guns.

If hardcore games, as in games with punishing difficulty and an unwillingnes to wait for you to grasp the core mechanics of the game, existed as a subgenre in the industry, then fair enough. But it doesn't.
I agree with you on the whole, so don't take this the wrong way, but you just described Demon's Souls. Great game BTW. The game doesn't pull any punches (or wait for you to grasp the mechanics). But with practice, the game is quite playable and fun!
I've heard nothing but good things about Demon's Souls. I'll have to check that out in due time.

I don't think I've ever used hardcore to describe games... For me, a hardcore gamer is one who games because it's almost an obsession. Who realises that it's even more than escapism. That it's that awesome feeling of taking down that god damn dragon, or the satisfaction of seeing your character develop. Anyway, I would say any hardcore game would be one that comes down to skill, not luck. So God Of War. How about Oblivion and Morrowind? Assassins Creed? I suppose AC2 has a gun, but it's a musket for crying out loud. That shouldn't count. The Prince Of Persia games. Plenty more.

I am just so sick of these debates that are basically only about "how do you define something/someone to be hardcore/casual/gamer/adult/cool/annoying/whatever?". Everyone has their own opinion, because they are so loose definitions. Bleh.

OT: No

Both of the terms hardcore and FPS are a big turn off to me. I'll have a cup of tea and a game of Civ IV, thanks.
For real. I like FPSes now and again, but if you want a challenge you play Master of Orion, Civ IV, Sins of a Solar Empire or other games that require more thought than "lol shoot it"

Just at a quick clance towards my game shelf, Ninja Gaiden, Oblivion, God of War, and Tekken 6 come to mind. Though if you consider "Fable 2" to be hardcore game material than I could probably extend that to include games like "Assassin's Creed" and "Brutal Legend." I'm assuming the wii is the root of your perception by the "open world FPS" comment. If this is a hidden "why do people say the wii has no hardcore games" post, it has nothing to do with the lack of guns, but more the lack of games that offer a remote challenge or some sort of decent competitive online multiplayer. It's just that the latter happens to be mainly associated with FPS.
