Biased poll, voted the bottom for lulz.

Middle answer is really me.

"I tend to be suspicious of popular things, but if it's good, it's good" sums me up quite well. One thing I'd have to add - I can't keep track of all the good popular things that have been completely ruined for me by people going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about them. Bands, songs, video games, YouTube videos, movies, whatever. People don't seem to understand the words 'saturation' and 'overkill'.
As I scrolled down to the bottom of the topic, the last post on the last page says it all perfectly.

I tend to form my own opinions, but I'll usually go with stuff that's popular because then there are people to play with who aren't elitist wankers.

Also, I'm wary of things with a large "alternative" base. The "alternative" crowd tend to put me off something faster than the "mainstream" one...

I tend to stay clear in general of popular things cause I know how stupid the genearl populace is nowadays when it comes to anything good being released. Jonas Brothers saying they're better than Metallica? I hated them before they said that but that just put the nail in their coffin, are they fucking serious? Granted, I don't even like Metallica that much but how are you going to tell me that some pop(masquerading as rock)group is better than basically one of the pioneers of heavy metal as we know it?

It's that stupidity alone that puts me off popular stuff, cause it'll be watered and dumbed down for the masses, and in the above case the artists just get too goddamned big for their boots and think they're the shit, that makes me angry. It's more to do with the fact that nothing good comes out anymore, everything is just a rehash of something before it, where's the creativity and individuality? Lost, that's what it is.

Anyway, I'm getting a bit off track here. Basically, my point is I tend to like it, until the stupidity of the masses affects it.
I hear ya on that, some say it's elitism but it's not really, it's cause the random person who knows nothing about it comes and fucks the whole thing up, I completely understand now why skateboarders get so annoyed with the younger kids who do it. I mself have this too now with Parkour in my area, only me and my mate train seriously, I'm talking every other day(once we trained everyday for the week, couldn't move afterwards)and there are about 15-20 other tracuers/freerunners who "train"(and when I say train I mean loiter about places giving us a bad name, littering and getting us moved on from spots)and get in our way, they piss about and do nothing, maybe a few vaults here and there and fuck off to ruin another spot. It's not good for the image in our town, it's bad enough as it is without them making it worse, luckily people know us around the town, shopkeepers, security guards etc, they know we don't cause trouble but when they're with us we all get moved on, which is fair enough, but these other people don't have to be dicks and ruin it for everyone else.

Mercanary said it in less words than I did but it's true, when you like something that no one else has heard of and then everyone gets their hands on it they taint it, cause then it's not as good cause you have those people tell you different things, they make a mess of what it was that was great before they got their hands on it, then they have the nerve to turn around and call us "elitist" when we were there before everyone else liking it, knowing everything there is to know about it before them and they call you elitist.

The media warps everything it touches and ruins things for people who have known about hidden gems of entertainment for ages, then the media gets their hands on it and now everyone knows about it, and ruins it even further. So I'm not hating on popular things but, not all of them are bad, but the things that the people do to them are bad. People are stupid.

I just base whether or not I like something on whether or not it's good. It's just that a lot of the popular stuff I find I don't really like.

In turn, I will base whether or not I discover it less on its popularity as well and more just if I hear of it, I probably only discover popular stuff first because it's popular, and I hear of it somewhere first as a result. That's why my music collection is quite a balance between popular stuff and obscure stuff.

To a certain extent. If all my friends like something and are like "omg you MUST watch it" I'm obviously going to have big expectations and will most likely end up disappointed. If its something I randomly came across and its awesome then its just awesome. There is no expectation.

I don't give a toss about how popular something is. I do my research when I need something and I buy whatever meets my needs best, or has the best functionality fit for the purpose it is supposed to serve or whichever is best value.

As an example if you look into it IPods are not as good as some other brands of MP3 player for the purpose it is supposed to serve. So I personally went with a Cowon S9 as it is critically acclaimed to have the best sound quality available and very good support... also it has Bluetooth which is useful for me.

"I tend to be suspicious of popular things, but if it's good, it's good" is what I chose. I try to forget the hype so I have unbiased standards. Though I occasionally can't be bothered to check it out

I'm not fussed about popularity - if I like it, then I like it, regardless of what anyone tells me.

I guess a good example is the band Kings of Leon. I like them, don't get me wrong but then I didn't enjoy their latest album, and I found their single, Sex on Fire, particularly dull, but not because of the popularity - I just didn't enjoy the song or album.

I don't avoid popular things because they're popular, I gave that up a while ago. In high school, having the right shoes, jeans, cd player, whatever was a sign of status and how cool you were. Now, I couldn't really care less. My clothes are comfortable, my truck's beaten up but still my baby, I own no Ipod or any mp3 player for that matter. What bothers me is the lack of respect with certain popular things. Like Ipods. I can't tell you how many times I've had a conversation with someone who can't be bothered to take out both earbuds. They'll take one out and keep listening to their music. Have the fucking decency to respect who you're talking to and take the damn things out of your ears! That being said, there are things I will buy that are popular, not because of that fact, or a sense of, oh my god I NEED to have that, but because it's a good product. [sup]/old man-sounding rant[/sup]

I sometimes tend to avoid the popular things, as I associate it with the other popular things my friends like, and assume that they're just as shitty. Sometimes I've been wrong, but most of the things I like have I found from my siblings, close friends and myself.

I do what I want. I would say I'm Indie but that would put me into a catagory. Even though I get mainstream stuff, I am not mainstream

I usually don't follow fads because, most of the time, they suck. But if something's good, its good, no question about it.

I choose independently. Just because 11 million people play WOW doesn't mean I like it. Sometimes popular stuff is Total Cr.a.p Not WOW, the game is okay.

I chose "I tend to be suspicious of popular things, but if it's good, it's good".

In general I'm neither for or against things are popular, but I am suspicious of popular things, because the masses are quite stupid, and what's popular is often overpriced. I can't care less about what brand my clothes are, as long as it's not too expensive, as I think spending hundreds of dollars on a t-shirt is stupid.

In regards to what I buy, I did have an iPod, but the battery died just after the warranty expired, so f*** 'em, and I won't buy any apple computer, they are too expensive and not for games. I just bought a wii to play stuff with my girlfriend, my comp is a nice, black, homemade beast consisting of pretty much as many brands as possible, and my taste in games has nothing to do with what's popular. :)
