Lets take a look at some old-school shooters.

Now lets look at some of the newer FPS titles.

Notice a changing trend of how the gun seems to take up about a quarter of the screen these days? I dunno about you guys, but I find it incredibly annoying. One reason why I dislike TPS games is that a whole character is blocking my view, but now FPS games are just swapping that with a gun sticking up my nose.

So, whaddya think?

You, my friend, are very picky. I've never noticed this, and to be honest, I don't really care.

In all honesty, I think the modern shooters have a lot more problems compared to some of their predecessors than just the larger guns. It does however imply a rather strange perspective, which is odd.

I agree. Too much screen (un)real estate is being consumed by the weapon. That should only happen if a) Accuracy is a non-issue,or b) It's a ludicrously powerful gun, then it usualy falls under object a) anyway.

To a certain point yes. BF3 looks like the only game listed above, and at all, for that matter, that accurately portrays how someone holds a gun. I'm especially annoyed when your character holds their pistol right next to their face, rather than outward.

I don't think the gun is too big, it should just be lower. Shorter might be good, too.

I'm pretty sure its because of console gamers sitting further away.

If you'll notice, Crysis has a much smaller gun size than Crysis 2.

I guess it's for Realism maybe? I dunno, i mean when you're holding a real gun it takes up quite a bit of your Point of View/Vision/Perspective/whateverthehellyouwanttocallit. That's the only reason I can think of for the guns becoming larger

I actually never noticed that, but now that you point it out, I just found the reason I enjoy old school shooters more. But to be honest with you, I think modern shooters have that out of necessity. The game is so fast passed paced because most of it is geared towards online gameplay, there is rarely anytime to look around and enjoy the environment, you need to be able to ADS at a moment's notice. Which is what I don't like.

It might be related to the ability to aim down the sights.
I've got to agree here. It's probably to encourage looking down the sights; it wasn't an option in the games you mentioned as well as many other older games, and now it's just considered good practice in FPSes.

Meh. I guess I just never really noticed. Maybe its just one of those "Look! Look! A gun!! See how well animated it is? Isn't it pretty? Are you looking?!? Look at how many pixels we can render!!!" things. They could just be showing off. Older games really couldn't boast about how well animated their guns are.

The little guns look weird to me S when i was a kid was more into strategy games. The m16 is a little over 3 feet in length so guns aren't really all that small anyhow.

When I looked at the pictures, I thought you would say that you miss the good old days when we had a health-bar that we needed to keep somewhat full at all cost, instead of hiding behind a rock and regenerate life like the little cowards gaming companies have made us xD

It is getting quite annoying that I can't see the bottom quarter of my screen, especially when playing splitscreen
