too me it looks like some of those guns are basic machine guns in the earlier screens and more advanced guns in the later games.

but also i would think that holding a gun would take up alot of your field of vision like in the later games.

I don't mind it if your gun is also your HUD, but otherwise, its one of those things that grinds my gears.
It just doesn't make sense to me- we have our controls on the table or in our lap. Reminding us of the fact that we aren't actually holding a weapon by waving it in our face is a bit of an immersion breaker for me.

And since when is HL2 an old school shooter? How long ago did it come out? 2007, yes?
pretty sure it came out around 2004

OT: I really dont see the problem. It is not that big.

I've only noticed this on one occasion. The bloody chemical thrower from Bioshock. Also that Crysis 2 screenshot looks off somehow. It looks like a much uglier game than what I played. Also that red dot sight wasn't as square as the one in what I played. I'm just going to assume that's from when it was in developement.

I personally enjoy 3PS's because of the added animation of the characters, such as Gears of War. Its adds a whole new dimension of gameplay. And in terms of the guns, I love seeing the guns I'm using. In FPS's, if i want to use an M16, and I also want to see how it fires, the empty casings, smoke, how it reloads, etc. It adds a particular level of satisfaction in my opinion. But then again, I'm also a huge fan of little details. So thats my two cents, hope it helped.

I'd say it's a legitimate design decision that fits in with, first and foremost, iron sights, as well as health regeneration, reduced accuracy when moving/increased accuracy when crouching, limited sprint ability, silent movement while walking, one-hit-kill headshots, &c. &c. It's all part of making the player slow down, rather than run-and-gun through everything. (In this respect, I don't think Deus Ex would have suffered from a larger view of the weapon/iron sights.)

If you were making a run-and-gun style thing, and a gun did take up this much space (without it being e.g. a specific disadvantage for using that weapon), or if using iron sights didn't improve visibility (I'm looking at you, Killing Floor's M14), that would be a problem.
