Poll: Does Wreck-it Ralph count as a "video game movie"? (Spoiler-free)

It's a "video game movie," sure. It is not, however, a video game adaptation.

Key difference, that is. Although that's just based on personal definitions, and in order to talk about "video game movies" to someone, we'd need to define our terms.

I would argue that Wreck-it Ralph is more of a video game movie than the kind of stuff you're describing. Sure, other movies might be based off of actual video game franchises, but they aren't actually about video games. The Resident Evil movies, for example, has no connection to video games beyond the fact that Resident Evil was a video game first.

Wreck-it Ralph, on the other hand, is, without a doubt, a movie about video games. Also, it is excellent, which is more than one can say about a vast majority of movies based off of video game franchises, if not all of them.

This is a surprisingly tricky question; when I hear "video game movie" I think of video games adapted into movies, rather than movies about video games. Ergo it's a question of definitions. I say that Wreck It Ralph is a video game movie in the same way that The Wizard [www.imdb.com/title/tt0098663/] is a video game movie which is to say, not really.

War movies are about War, Zombie movies are about zombies, Video game movies should be movies about video games. Like The King of Kong, Gamer, War Games, Stay Alive, Tron, maybe Scott Pilgrim.

Otherwise half the movies that have ever been made would be "book movies".

The film is about existing VIDEO GAME characters in a fictional VIDEO GAME arcade.
I'm pretty sure that qualifies it into the 'video game film' category.

The fact that it had the imagination to change the names and game scenarios just shows it's a video game movie.

Not like Resident Evil, they kinda did the opposite...

I'm pretty hyped about seeing it, if only for Dr Robotnik and the Pacman ghost.

I haven't actually seen it myself (don't really plan to either, it doesn't seem like my type of thing), but I've read up on the film. I'd say that based on the first part alone (Beginning up to Hero's Duty) I would agree that it is a video game movie, but after that not as much. I don't think it not being based on an earlier franchise/game disqualifies it from classification. That said, I'm not sure I would necessarily classify it as such. Can't really express why that is, I think it's one of those "gut-feelings" where it looks like a video game movie, it acts like a video game movie, it even sounds like a video game movie, but something doesn't sit right with me calling it one. Maybe if I saw it I could get a better reading on it, but as it stands I'm remaining cautious on both sides.

No, Wreck-It Ralph is not a videogame movie. Just like how Monsters Inc is not a monster movie.

"Video game movie" is it's own sub-genre that applies to movies of differing genre's that are based on video games.

Well yeah, of course we brought up The Wizard. Watching it does make me feel old though, as did quite a few scenes in Wreck It Ralph.

On the one hand you have sports movies: movies with plots that revolves around some form of sporting event. In that case you definitely have a videogame movie with Wreck-it-Ralph.

On the other hand consider the term comic book movie: movies whose plots are adapted from plots found in pre-existing comic book franchises. This is the way that we've been using the term videogame movie up until now so in that case, Wreck-it-Ralph is not a videogame movie (and for that matter there has never been a "comic book movie" in the same usage as the above either.)

The difference is of course whereas sports can only be subject matter, comic books, novels, and videogames can have plots to be adapted, and that's why when those nouns are used in conjunction with "movie" the general feel of the term would be that it is an adaptation.

No, not really. I think Wreck-It Ralph would need to be based on an actual video game in order to be called a "video game movie" - similar to the way a "comic book movie" has to be based on an actual comic.

Plus, it's actually a good movie.

I'm going to say no, but I'm going off of the definition that a "video game movie" is a movie based off of an existing video game or video game franchise (as stated before). That's usually when I've heard the label "video game movie" used.

That said, I'm not sure what it would be called.
