So i picked doom 3 special edition(for 10 dollars), upon hearing it had something it should have had to begin with, coop. I'd heard this was a horror game, and even played a demo. Personally i don't think of myself as an overwhelmingly brave person, but when i have the arsenal of a small well funded militan army, and there are only a few starved looking demons between me and the credits, i'm not exactly pissing myself.
Ok so i start up the game, i wonder around waiting for all the characters to realize i'm not playing this game for the damn plot. Eventually everyone shuts up and instantly turn into zombies. Finally... for a second i'm having fun just plugging various zombies and the occasional imp. at this point i'm playing a mediocre shooter... So jump forward about 4 hours and 8 empty coke cans later, and i'm still waiting to even jump out of my seat. I wasn't expecting much, but damn it, i was at least hoping for my heart rate to increase a twinge. The monster eventually just become "how many bullets this particular guant... thing takes to die". thus the experience dulls for me. The only genuine moment of true bliss was when i picked up the minigun. This ended as soon as i accidently, while reaching for my flashlight, hit the goddamn PDA button by accident for the 5778th time and have to wait through all 4 loading screens it takes me to put the damn thing away. Oh, and who holds a PDA so close to their face that they can't see anything but the screen. That's damned unhealthy.
OK admittedly finding the chainsaw was a change of pace, but still, nothing that really over excited me. OK so i eventually find my friend Dennard, who i decide is a worthy teammate in my now 2 man battle against the legions of hell.
Unfortunetly i learn that there is in no fact no coop. The game misled me, the only coop there is is for the old retro Doom 1 and doom 2 that they have in the Extra menu (this is only in the deluxe edition). In all honesty, i had more fun jokingly blasting through the old retro game with a friend then i did playing doom 3.
Ok to wrap this all up, this game is not anywhere approaching condemned:criminal origins in fear. It also doesn't beat titles like Halflife 2 and painkiller in monster killing action. The plot they also try to feed down your throat is not nearly as good as the developers must have thought it was(judging by how seriously they seem to think the player must be taking it). All in all this is a totally skippable purchase... ok maybe if it's $10, but personally, i'd just go play system shock 2 again.
