If you have to choose one of those, go with Dragon Age: Origins. If you can afford it, get all of them. I personally think Oblivion is complete crap, and requires a shit-ton of modding to even be okay, but a lot of people call it one of the best RPGs ever, I'm probably a minority there.

Either way, Dragon Age 2 isn't as bad as some people say, if you ask me. I think it's great, but Origins is still easily the best game out of the three.

It depends on what you prefer, if you want a large open world and don't mind a few bugs then go with Oblivion, or if you want a non-linear adventure with very few bugs and more strategy-oriented gameplay, then go with Dragon Age Origins. Just, whatever you do, do NOT play dragon age 2.

I like the ideas behind Oblivion but for me the game was just too dull and the gameplay bored me pretty bad, melee combat was unsatisfying and magic was OP as hell without really looking cool. Quests in the majority were uninteresting, those that were required a different character build. Dialogue system was very poor and non-immersive.

If other people like Oblivion that's cool but I just can't get into what's supposed to make it great.

Dragon Age Origins on the other hand plays like an MMO, that is to say something I don't normally like but the story and characters kept me interested in the overall experience. Not the finest Bioware RPG to have come out but definitely engaging and immersive.

Elder scrolls an almost universally loved series, which even some haters tend to fall in love with one of them.
Dragon age (ignoring 2 which I liked but many here despise) a throwback, which while good feel dated to some.

I expect most to say Elder scrolls with ease with some on dragon age as this is a web site containing "gaming connoisseurs"

Dragon Age:O if you really want a new party based RPG.
It's either that or small time indie RPGs like Avadon. There's not much choice from the last few years, so it's a choice between some half-decent games or nothing

Oblivion is just crap.
Broken gameplay mechanics, unresponsive controls, no challenge, too much grind, terrible animation, ugly talking heads and worse dialogues. It's the blandest sort of cookie cutter fantasy.
The only points in it's favor are a big world and the rural scenery looking alright.
Fortunately, aging first person RPGs are common enough, so you could do so much better with old gems like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Gothic 2.

Voice acting, Characters, and storyline in Dragon Age are brilliant, but for basically everything else (considering technology at the time of Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age) Elder Scrolls is the greatest!

I like both, and would prefer it if they learned from one another.

I want open world without load screens, an interesting story/characters, with complex fight mechanics, I want companions for random banter so I never get bored, and I want them to comment on the world we explore, why is there a cave here, why are there skeletons, what's up with this town, what is that tower for, what happened with this dungeon, I don't want to go read up several books on the lore to bridge the gaps when it would be a far superior experience if a companion would just go "hey I remember what happened here..."

And I never want them to take away choice, have a "casual" mode if you must but I don't want to slog through railroaded games where I'm constantly poked in the eye with all the butchered choices.

Origins, for me.
Oblivion is good, but I love the level of polish and work that has gone into Origins.
Deep, developing characters and all sorts.

Oblivion. That said, it's pretty old right now, so you might want to just consider waiting a couple of months for Skyrim.

Either way, and saying this as a massive Bioware fan, Elder Scrolls either way. They're just much more interesting games.

Both have their benefits, Bioware does better story and character developement where Bethesda create much more expansive and open world for you to do your own thing in. Why not just play them all, they are all worth the money and time.

I hated Dragon Age: Origins and gave up playing it when I discovered that the intricate RPG I wanted was, in fact, an incredibly linear corridor-based slashfest which pretty much forced you to play the game in a specific way to avoid getting stuck at certain combat-heavy sections which took you away from your party in a game that focuses on your party. Dragon Age II was pretty much the same but with slightly less tedious boring combat. Another problem is that the game has a heavy focus on characters, but all of the characters are pretty much cardboard cutout archetypes.

The Elder Scrolls games, on the other hand, you can play any way you like and also have just a lot more stuff to do, sporting hundreds of hours of gameplay as well as repeat playthroughs rather than DA's tactic of "PLAY THE GAME THROUGH AGAIN" for increased time/money value.

I would take an Elder Scrolls game over a Dragon Age game any day of the week.

After playing Oblivion, Dragon Age made me feel as if I wasn't so much playing the game as being walked through its story on a leach.

Besides: When things started to get tough in Oblivion, I'd go somewhere else and find something new to do for a while. When Dragon Age gets too tough for your character, there's pretty much nothing to do except start over.

I say open-world gameplay is where it's at!

I've decided I want my RPG fix, but I cant decide if I want dragon age: origins, Dragon age 2 or Oblivion. Which one do you guys prefer? why?
Depends, do you prefer open world sandbox type rpg? Or something more linear/story oriented? Both games are massive fun but it depends what you are looking for . But don't buy DA2 , unless you play DA:O . I voted for DA:O . Because although i had loads of fun with oblivion i couldn't tell you what to story is , and I play rpgs for story.

If you like RPGs stay away from the shitfest that is Dragon Age 2.

Out of the other two. It really depends what type of game you prefer. Oblivion being more open world vs. Origins more linear (but not completely) and party based tactics
