I never understood why in pretty much every friking poll an arbitriary option such as (What is SP?) or (I just hate EA) are included. Those just plain mess with the other serious responses.

Anyways, its pretty obvious than it is going to affect Single Player games, but only for EA. I dont think all the companies are going to follow this.

Besides this is really kind of irrelevant, I mean most games already are pretty much single player with some kind of Multiplayer on it anyways...
Well I added it since some people really don't take this topic seriously. I tried to have poll options that tried to reflect what people would want to say. Considering that 38% of people voted what you call arbitrary options, I believe that it was beneficial. Hope that helps.

Yes, I understand what you are trying to say. But What I meant is that, the people who voted for those options may have voted on those for the sake of it without thinking about the other options (particulary the hate on EA one. I bet more than a few just saw the poll and voted on that randombly because "hey, lets hate EA!", instead of actually trying to think about the thread´s subject) and thus, therefore some of those people may have voted on one of the other options, so it isnt really reflecting what the people in general wants to say...

Oh well, either wat its just a little detail, I didnt meant to come off as a jerk, sorry.
I agree with you on all this. I feel like it always undermines the polls a bit. You don't really get a feel for what people think of the situation. I especially hate when threads have varrying degrees of yes or no, but I hate it either way. I'm actually interested to see what the escapist thinks of things, and when 20% of the people in a thread have essentially thrown out their votes it is kind of frustrating.

OT: It's pretty bad, although I don't think its surprising. Only thing that worries me is what this is going to do to Bioware. I'm not their biggest fan, but Pandemic was one of my favorite studios of all time and I'd hate for EA to do to Bioware what they did them for the sake of the Bioware fans.

This makes me sad :(

EA have a history of publishing genuinely good games; I really enjoyed Dead Spac 1 & 2, Dragon Age: origins, Kingdoms of Amalur and the like, but I mainly enjoyed them because they didn't force their online on me...I felt like I got a full single player experience for my money. Why must you now tack on online components to everything, EA? Why!?

Looks like I have no reason to give EA any more of my money from here on out. Granted I still haven't played ME3 but I could always wait until that's pre-owned (still plan on waiting for the Wii-U-Lease).

It's not just online passes. It's the CEO saying that they are no longer publishing single player games.

The fate of singleplayer games is a sensitive topic at this time, with campaigns getting shorter and shorter, multiplayer being tacked onto games unnecessarily, or even replacing a previously singleplayer title, and less and less original singleplayer games getting released.

Other developers recognise gamer's angst, and are coming out to call multiplayer a cancerous growth [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.386549-Spec-Ops-Multiplayer-Is-a-Cancerous-Growth], and a necessary evil.
Skyrim was heralded as the saviour to singleplayer games, because it proved that a dedicated singleplayer game (albeit from a previously established franchise) could still get the sales needed to not only break even, but top the sales chart and become a success.

The fate of singleplayer is a huge issue, and is being watched carefully by many, many gamers.
For EA to come out and announce they are not publishing pure singleplayer games any more is a very important development in this issue, and not in a good way.

Yes we do tend to bash EA for everything they do, because pretty much every executive decision they make is having a direct or indirect negative effect on gaming culture.
Pretty much this to anyone thinking this is just another 'waahhhhh, I hate EA' thread'.

Also, I shudder to think what this means for DA3...
Sounds like its just another "We hate EA" thread.

I'm curious when video gamers became akin to political parties. "This person/company is destroying our way of life..." No, no they're not. Single player games will always be around. They're not going away. Bethesda, Activision, and Nintendo still exist along with a host of other developers. EA does not hold the keys to video game development. Not to mention, a "tacked on multiplayer" doesn't diminish the quality of a single player element. I still liked Dead Space 2's campaign, and didn't once feel I had to play the multiplayer.

And yes, multiplayer is what a lot of gamers go by to justify buying a game to ensure they get their 60 dollars worth. Hell, I know I typically just rent single player games unless they're really really good. Not every developer can make some massive open world environment that tricks players into thinking its really good just because its got a shit-ton of random stuff to do.

It seems Mister Gibeau was a little bit misunderstood.

And at least it seems they actually remember Mirror's Edge exists.

Yup, this seems about par for the course for EA.

All aboard the TitanEAc. Next stop, collision course with the iceberg of failed customer relations.

"Let me clarify," Gibeau began. "What I said was [about not greenlighting] anything that [doesn't have] an online service. You can have a very deep single-player game but it has to have an ongoing content plan for keeping customers engaged beyond what's on the initial disc.
so we've gone from

"No more singleplayer games"

to

"Every game has pay-for DLC to milk customers of every last penny"

What. a. Fucking. Improvement.
Erm, yes, that's precisely what I got from the OP. I don't understand why (almost) everybody else didn't, though. Although the title is a tad misleading, I give it that.

yes

it will also mean games that would have been just fine with no mp will now have a cheap/crappy barely playable mp component...so it will damage the overall value of mp as well

If EA won't make quality single-player only games, others will be glad to fill the void created by them.

Wait where are all those people who ***** every time people whine about EA? They seem oddly absent in this thread. I mean it couldn't be that EA is actually doing something really stupid, this is all just because everyone loved to get on the EA hate train right?

any publisher that cuts out a significant, relevant, and successful portion of the gaming industry seriously needs a reality check. pretty sure last year's Game of the Year (by pretty much every place giving out game of the year awards) was an only single player game.. Skyrim. While EA didn't publish it, it still goes to prove that single player only games can and ARE a success. While I would normally say EA is shooting themselves in the foot with this, in all honesty, I kinda hope they do.

As a fun side note, VALVe has also said it intends to no longer produce single player only games. Which I find curious. But there is a HUGE difference from a studio saying they arent doing single player games, to a publisher saying it refuses to publish games that are single player only.

Just like I said in the other thread.

So they want to be more like Valve, eh?

Fuck all.
Just because I like seeing things fleshed out.

Care to take this to fruition?

If nothing else I'm sure it'll be a good read.
