Monopolies are actually the pinnacle of economy , the problem comes from our profit lead free market systems, means you need competition to keep the prices down and root out inefficiency.
There are natural monopolies that still exist , for example road systems and cable / pipe infrastructure for water gas electric. here the cost of creating everything twice is simply prohibitive to allow competition. we may have our water from a number of companies but it comes through the same pipes regardless.
But then Valve being a monopoly isn't anything to worry about, there's no barrier to competition and if they go evil it will open up the margins for a competitor, now microsoft, google, oil companies, retailers and pharmaceuticals. they are monopolies its worth being concerned about.
