I never play easy mode. TO me easy mode exists for people new to gaming or the genre itself, and being that I am quite experienced, I rarely have to fall back on this. In Fact I played Devil May Cry 3 on normal mode even after it suggested easy mode, and before they nerfed it to make up for the fact that somehow it became 100% more difficult when the game jumped continents from Asia to North America. Apparently I'm just L33t.

Normal and then move up to hard.
I hesitate sometimes when the game says "once you pick this difficulty, it cannot be changed."
Makes me think I'm gonna fail ><
But regardless, normal mode.

I usually play on easy first to enjoy the story and universe without risking the game becoming frustratingly hard halfway through. If the game is good enough for a second playthrough, I'll try a harder level. In games that allow you to change difficulty, I usually switch to normal when I feel things are too easy.

When I have trouble in a game, I switch to easy. Usually I just play on normal.
However, I played through Dragon's Age on Casual, and intend to do that on my first Skyrim playthrough. Why? I just wanted to feel like a badass. Easy mode isn't evil, it's just a route for people who want to get done faster (playing for the story) or just want to charge into a crowd of tanks with a hammer and win (Red Faction Guerilla, and that gives me such a warm feeling inside. Oh, that's just EDF blood)

when i play a game for the first time i'll usually start out on normal, but as soon as i have the faintest idea as to how the game works i'll crank up the difficulty as high as it goes, unless of course it's the kind of game where the top level is designed to be completed by the superhuman alone, in which case i'll just have it as hard as physically possible
Is it even humanely possible to do Realism mode by yourself on L4D2? I did a search a few weeks ago and I can only find people either

A) Cheating
B) Doing it with friends.

Of course it's probably because the AI is too busy jumping off balconies at every possibility for them to actually help you.
hmm, hard to say, ive never played that game

I very rarely play any games on easy. I start on normal and if that becomes too easy, I go up from there.

I have to say though, difficulty elitists irritate me. For instance, while I enjoy playing STALKER on maximum difficulty because I like the challenge and acute sense of fear that comes with it, that doesn't mean I think everyone should play on that difficulty, some people may not be quite as good at the game, and would find it too difficult to the point that they died repeatedly, whereas others might be capable of playing on a high difficulty, but not want to have to try that hard, which is understandable since different people play games in different ways. I enjoy playing games like STALKER on hard difficulties because I find it very satisfying surviving despite great difficulty, but if I was just playing to mess around and have fun, I would want to play on a lower difficulty.

This reminds me of the people who ran servers for Operation Flashpoint. Almost every one I encountered would always run the server on veteran mode (which removes most of the HUD elements, meaning that as a squad leader you can't tell where your people are unless you can see them personally, for one thing), because it's "realistic". That may be, but the result is that people in your group run off and dick around, and when you need to find them you can't because they're 500 meters away joyriding in a tractor.

No, it's not realistic to have circles around your men showing you exactly where they are, but it's also not realistic for soldiers to wander off like Alzheimers patients and ignore every radio call sent their way, because organized military units have something called discipline that generally precludes that behaviour.

I usually start on Normal, but usually tend to finish on Easy... I suck at games but I love the stories generally. Mind you when it comes to switching over to Online play I get screwed.

I always go for normal, unless I'm playing Saint's Row 2. The only change I notice is how long you have to revive your allies if they die.

I almost always play on Easy first, then crank it up when I feel comfortable with the game. I also play on Easy if I'm just trying to grind through a 2nd character in an RPG or something. Mass Effect is a good example. I play on easy until I reach max level, then swap to Hardcore/Insanity for achievements and such.

If I'm completely unfamiliar with the game, I'll usually play on the easiest difficulty (unless it's something insultingly easy, like Beginner mode in Guitar Hero/DJ Hero games). Then, once I understand it and start to get the hang of it all, I'll bump it up to normal.

The exception is strategy games. I ALWAYS play on easy for those.

I've recently lost my higher-difficulty virginity to Modern Warfare 2's Hardened mode (which is generally considered quite easy, but still). Normally I always play on easy, because I'm self conscious of being quite an average gamer and not wanting to test my abilities. Unlike with horror films, which I can watch dozens without flinching, games (especially horror games) provoke some weird preservational instinct in me that makes me very leery of danger and dying. And with free-roam games being more enjoyable the more freedom and power you accumulate, it makes easy or normal (rarely) my favourite setting. I only play horror games with trainers or god mode. =(

I generally play on normal, because I figure that's what the developers expected. That is what "normal" means, right?

The one game I played on easy was Bioshock, simply because the controls felt awkward for some reason.
