I choose easy to actually see the story line, the first play through is for the story, second is to actually be in the story, only doing certain attacks or not using my gaming knowledge to determine what happens in a game, rather I try out something and if it doesn't work I'm all "FUUU Let's try this!". By the third play through I'm violently hunting for achievements, special items, etc. on the hardest difficulty.

depends on the game, usually easy or normal, for single player i enjoy mowing down everything and really enjoying the story/lore above the actual gameplay, but if i enjoy that part of the game then my second or third playthrough ill crank it up to hard.

I'm really not a competitive video game person, so unless its online i normally always choose easier modes.

I often chose Easy first time because I always gets very frustrated when I die then I play it on Normal and dose not get frustrated and if I like the game I play it on Hard.

I generally go for normal difficulty and stick to it, refusing to downgrade and stubbornly trying to improve.

I recently went straight into Survivalist (hard) on Dead Space 2 and much rage was had. I finally gave in during the final fight and went down to normal to complete the game. It was a more effective survival horror experience but much more blood-boiling than Dead Space ought to be. I realise why that game has New Game Plus now.

I usually only play on 'Easy' difficulty if I'm playing a puzzle based game - most of those have different difficulty levels, so to play them all I start on easy (the beginning) - which is best to use to get used to the game mechanics.

If it's a game I've encountered before and decent at - like Arkanoid, Tetris, etc - then I usually start at 'Hard'.

All other games I choose 'Normal' first. I like to get the feel of a game before I go all masochistic on myself! ;D

I finish the game on easy to master the mechanics, then play it on harder difficulty settings to test out my understanding and "skill" of the game :3

I usually play on normal or hard, but if the game throws a dick move, or is bugged, then I'll switch to easy if I can. So it does depend on the game.

I play Easy on fighting games and FPS's because I suck at them and the last time I checked, dying over and over and over wasn't that much fun.
Platformers, beat 'em ups, hack 'n' slashers, that sort of stuff's usually on Normal for me.

I always play on Normal or whatever default setting for the game's difficulty. Though if I'm getting my ass handed to me and just want to finish the game/story and work on the difficulty later, yea I'll turn down the difficulty.

I usually play games on easy, because I'm mostly just interested in the story, not the competitive aspect of playing a game. I only ever go up a level if it feels likethe enemy aren't even trying to survive, like in the Battle for Middle Earth games, where I won entire wars with only occasional casualties. On Aliens vs Predator, I also played the Alien campaign on hard and the Predator campaign on normal because they were good fun and very easy once I got the hang of them.

First playthrough always on normal.

If the game is good enough to warrant a second play through then I play on hard.

Games by rockstar, i always turn the auto-aim off.

I always play on normal or hard, depending on the game. I never go to easy. I will always go with a difficulty harder than I feel I can handle rather than one easier than I think I can. I like being challenged.

Usually I play "Normal", except if it's a type of game that I'm not good or experienced in, when I can select "Easy".

Normal to start. Then sometimes Hard if I want a challenge.

But if it's a game like DA:O, and I have played it four times already, and then my PS3 dies, taking all my saves to the grave with it, and then Bioware says, "You can import your DA:O save into DA2"

Well then I scream, ball my fists, and rush through DA:O again on easy.

But usually, that's the only time I use easy. Most games, easy is too easy to be enjoyable.
I know I'm just being a smart arse but solo nightmare speed runs can be done in like sub 10 hour sessions apparently.
Although... that really, really fucking sucks bro.

I usually play on the hardest difficulty available to me. The exception to this rule was CoD, I was told to play on normal by the tutorial, I bumped it up to the next step though because I like to think I'm more awesome than I actually am.

I never play games on easy although the example above would probably change that.

Normal on my first playthrough, then I crank it up to the hardest difficulty and tear my hair out.

I have the xbox set to go to hard difficulty automatically so I really don't notice difficulty anymore. A friend of mine used to play on easy constantly, but after years of convincing, he's finally seen the light and upped his game to normal and above.

I usually play the difficulty just up above the middle of the spectrum, so I guess Hard. I like my first playthrough to pose a challenge, since I'm not likely to replay most games and I'd like for it to last. Especially true of horror games, since I feel there needs to be big threat to you or the game loses it's impact.

I never play on easy, with the only exception being when I'm required to finish a game in a short period of time (such as for uni). It takes the fun out of it when there's no difficulty factor for me.

I start with normal then I either bump up or down the difficult depending on the game, if I'm having trouble getting into it and I just want to get it finished so that I can tick it off my list I will probably lower to easy, if I really like the game I will crank the difficulty up.

It really depends. If I'm just going into a game, I'll pick normal and adjust from there. I'm pretty bad at games in general (except RPG/TBS), so it's rare that I'll play on hard.
