Personally I think its a bad idea, I have been a fan since Morrowind and I still am but im not getting the mmo, they had a really good thing with singleplayer games but now... remember when Skyrim came out and everyone said "HA! see we dont need mmo's!" I wonder what changed, and chances are it will fail, the fanbase is divided, and people who haven't heard of it (they exist, I know its strange but they do) will just see another wow clone

Realistically the only correct answer is "cake", or "none of the above", because the game has not been released yet so we can weigh whether or not it's a quality product.

All you're going to get in here is people snap-reacting to screenshots, descriptive blurbs, or their own biases regarding MMO vs single player.

If someone close to you said "I'm going to put a knife into my eye" would you wait to see the result or?

Still, I can't imagine it working, but I expect that, like me, most of the naysayers are jaded with the genre in general.

But just think of how much time you spend on an offline TES game, and how much of that experience they could appropriate for an online experience. If they did a lot of phasing, upped the number of random overworld encounters and had hundreds of instanced mini dungeons, ruins and the likes, it wouldn't have to forsake the existing Elder Scrolls formula. What I am concerned about is the balancing.
I mean, what's an Elder Scrolls game if you can list all the ways of breaking it on one hand?

Now, I want you to sit quietly for a moment and ask yourself if "Elder Scrolls MMO" is a quality analogue for "Knife in the eye".

I saw this Kotaku article linked in another thread a few days ago. After reading it my interest withered and died.

GASP! you mean people are speculating about the quality of a game before it is released!? how dare they? and on a gaming forum no less. man, the nerve of some people.

It doesn't matter what analogue I use, ok take any other bad idea and do the same, because as I said I see it as a bad thing because I think it wont work, because as I said above the fanbase is divided and people who don't know Elder scrolls will just see another wow clone, I see it as a pure flop, if you disagree then lets just agree to disagree and end it, I have no wish to enter a flame war

We don't even have any fucking information to speculate WITH. There's like, ONE press release and a half dozen hazy screenshots. I guess we can speculate about the Elder Scrolls MMO that exists ENTIRELY IN OUR IMAGINATIONS.

I can see it now! It's amazing! The mechanics are fantastic!

Of course it matters what analogue you use. "Knife in the eye" is ridiculously hyperbolic and you knew it when you started typing it out. It's not a functional analogue whatsoever.

Again, without actual information upon which we can engage in EDUCATED speculation, all you're doing is imagining what an Elder Scrolls MMO might potentially look like, and then leaping to uninformed conclusions.

It's just too early for this, man.

And for gods sake this is not a "flame war".

I always wanted to play TES with friends in coop. "Diablo 2"-like coop, where you can create and join games with a limited amount of players and partake in the quests.

But I don't think this MMO will provide the kind of experience I want. I already see forced 3rd person view, action bars, raids, grinding, tanks, healers, dps, cooldown abilities, auction house, guilds, etc. In short, everything all the other MMOs repeat ad nauseum, but with argonians and khajiit. It's like videogame-themed playing cards : the art changes, but the game remains the same.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it will be exactly what I want : The same Elder Scrolls we love, only with other people to play with.

Bad idea and from what I can see on the Bethesda forums the majority agrees with me.

I've always wanted to see a MMO with true action combat, responsive AI, environment interaction.

The TES series is notorious for that, and yet that's exactly what's lacking in the announced MMO.

Alright, here is a bit more thought out analogue. Lets say you are a military commander (or something else that has this power) and an engineer comes to you and presents you with an idea for a new weapon system, and asks you for money to make it, you look to your soldiers, half say yes other half says no, then you look at the civilians and they say it looks exactly like another weapon system, would you give him the money? hehe feels like a question from the pick your class screen in Morrowind

Limited multiplayer = good. Massively multiplayer = eh....the entire system would have to be remade. How would pickpocketing work with 10,000 people? EVERYTHING WOULD BE GONE WITHIN A WEEK, all npcs would be dead, all the dungeons would be cleared out. EVERYTHING. You would have to make it pretty linear to be honest, which is not very Elder Scrollsy.

Also mods. I only play with a couple mods at the moment, but its one of the core reasons TES has been so popular, to overlook that for the sake of a mmo cash grab is a foolish business move.

Yea yea yea we're hating on a game before its even got any information on it, but unless its completely different from traditional mmos, even more than Guild Wars 2, then it will fail as an Elder Scrolls game. You can't take the freedom out of Elder Scrolls and leave Elder Scrolls. It just ceases to be Elder Scrolls.

Can you just cool your jets for one second? You've made it painfully clear that you think this is a bad idea, alright? Now let the other people voice their opinions. There are two other major responses that are going to happen in a thread about a game that we know this little about: "I think its a good idea" and "there isn't enough information for one to accurately judge yet."

Show some respect for these opinions, because they are just as valid as yours.

What opinion? I don't have an opinion! There is insufficient information to form an opinion!

And really, please. I do not need to be told to "cool my jets". I am pushing keys with my fingers, not flipping over tables. I occasionally use caps to emphasize single words or sentence fragments as an alternative to bolding, as I'm not always in the mood to type in the appropriate coding. No one is freaking out.

The very, very tiny bit of information we've got is a mixed bag. Three factions = promising, the screenshots look ghastly. But it's way too early to say anything for sure. A lot of people dislike MMOs on this forum, so they're going to reflexively vote "bad idea".

You seem to have misread my post.

I totally get how seeing a favorite franchise doing what looks to you is to be a terrible move is upsetting, but kudos to acknowledging emotions. Still, you're only passionate about this because you care. And caring is good and stuff like that.
