I'd say Skyrim was incredibly weighted to be played by a melee character.
Mage - Well, the fact almost any Mage guide starts out "Make 100% spell cost reducing gear" points out the obvious issue. You either use that trick, or get drowned by encounters that you lack the mana to handle with (or do inanely silly kiting tricks)

Thief : Play Dishonored (A generally similar game). Now go play a thief in Skyrim. Skyrim rarely (mostly on the thief guild missions) bothers to leave any sort of stealth paths in dungeons, leaving you with a ludicrous suspension of disbelief as to how your skill is working. Assorted pre-scripted detection encounters throw even that out the window. (I tried a thief challenge run upgrading only Stamina, and the results were not pretty when bosses that auto-detected you one-shot kill)

Tangent aside. I'd give it to Fallout. Not as expansive, but its more consistent and cohesive. Its alternate playstyles tend to work better as well, and the fact that some choices exclude other options adds to replayability.

Well mages are entirely viable without 100% cost reduction, and your missing the point of thieves, but that's not really the point of the thread so I wont spam the thread with my explanation as to why.

But I have to ask, why is Fallout's FORCING you to be unable to do everything, better then Elder Scrolls letting you choose to be how good or bad in a skill as you want to be, better?

I have never understood why people want the game to force them to do something, or to be unable to do something, when the exact same results can be done simply by letting the player choose what they want.

I have heard complaints from people that being able to do every guild on one playthrough kills re-playability, and that you should be unable to join all the guilds to make re-playability better, and all I can say is, why did you join every guild on one guy?

Yeah you can do everything in Elder Scrolls, and be a super god who is great in all skills, but why would you chose to?

Every time I hear that all I can think of is that everyone is a power-gamer who doesn't actually RP anymore.

Defenatly going with Fallout.

For me it started back in 1997 - 1998, when there where so damn many Fantasy games (And Diabolo, wich you can get tired off pretty fast after a month), that it was a nice breaktrou, cause it wasn't shooter No.: 128, had a good setting and a Story you wanted to follow.

And lets just say: they kept trhat Formula all the way... with a ten year break (Exept for Fallout Tactics, wich was just Jagged Alliance in Fallout and the Fallout game on PS2, none of the old lovers speak about.... for damn good reasons).

Fallout.

Why? It's more interesting than the Elder Scrolls' generic fantasy setting.

Fallout has an inviting and depressive atmosphere that most games can't even hope to achieve. The weapons are a blast to use, there are more awesome and unique places to visit, the characters are quirky and have personality, it's just so good.

Plus, the music. Oh sweet lord, the MUSIC.

It so magnificent...

I prefer the Elder Scrolls. It's just more fun IMO. There's more ways you can roleplay and I find the lore to be more interesting. I also like the setting way more. Fallout is great but the depressing environment can really drain me after a while.

I do like the combat in the Fallout games way more though.

TES, because of the Warp in the West.

Yep. I'm voting for something because it has a canon-shattering three days of pure WTFery in it.

Seems reasonable to me!

Fallout. Absolutely Fallout. I find it so damned hard to care about anything in The Elder Scrolls games. I don't know why, but the characters are never anywhere near as engaging, the setting (excepting Morrowind) is just so much boring generic fantasy setting, and the average blasted townscape of the later Fallout games is so much more interesting visually speaking than another tract of forest or mountain.

I should add that out of the Elder Scrolls I've only played Morrowind, Oblivion, and just got Skyrim in the Steam sale this weekend, while I've played nearly every Fallout game ever made.

Also, what's with all the people saying stuff along the lines of "TES 'cos dragons"? That makes nearly no sense at all. Nearly every fantasy setting ever made has dragons, and most of them are a good deal more awesome than the ones in Skyrim. Unless done very well indeed, dragons are just boring, and I'm afraid Skyrim does not do them particularly well.

Morrowind has a special place in my heart, but I prefer the Fallout Series as a whole to TES series.

I can't remember a game where I felt more immersed in the experience than Fallout. Maybe it was growing up in the shadow of the cold war, but the imagery of DC in ruins was powerful to me in a way few games manage. The nuclear threat felt so real back then (the 80s) and Fallout tapped into that brilliantly. It's 50's aesthetic was a good choice because if it'd been done in 80s art deco it would almost have been TOO real.

Not to slight the Elder Scrolls series of course. They are fantastic games. Worth every bit of love people admonish upon them. Fallout (specifically 3) just resonates with me.

I'm going to say The Elder Scrolls, even though I believe Fallout is better designed. When it comes down to it, I just love the lore and the world given to me by the Elder Scrolls.

That's like choosing between Marilyn Monroe and Scarlett Johansson, or pizza and tacos. Both, dammit!

...but Fallout if I am absolutely forced to choose. In Fallout you tend to have a lot more choices offered.

Fallout for world, lore and combat; TES for mods and sandbox.

I genuinely can't decide between the two.

For console, Fallout. For PC, TES.

There, I did it. I made a decision whilst maintaining contact between my arse and the fence.

Voted Fallout.

Fallout has better humor, atmospehere, and characters in my opinion.

I also prefer the combat system over the Elder Scrolls games. Fallout allows you play the way you want. Want to shoot people? Go ahead. Want to throw grenades at people? Nothings stopping you. Want to punch people in the face until they die? Go beserk!
Excuse me sir the king of Sweden would like a word...

cookie for the reference.

Fallout hands down, considering Skyrim is the only Elder Scrolls game I played.

I like the Fallout universe more then the ES one. Why...I find that the story, gameplay and setting are much better and suited to my style...hell I am more of the sword and melee guy, but I like doing that in Fallout. It is much more satisfying. :D

I hope Fallout 4 will be announced soon. :/

Also I still love the ES series. ^.^

Both, really. When I want an in-depth and immersive sci-fi RPG I play Fallout and when I want an in-depth and immersive fantasy RPG I play TES.

For me Fallout is the best sci-fi RPG series out there and TES is the best fantasy RPG series - I see the two as separate and distinct categories. Sometimes I'm in the mood for lasers and mutants, sometimes I'm in the mood for fireballs and demons (or daedra in this case).

I'm gonna go with TES.
While I did enjoy some Fallout games, they simply lack sorcery. Even if they do have swords.
Also, not medieval fantasy like enough to compete with TES.

I could never get past the combat in any TES game. Tried 'em all and I couldn't see the allure in first-person real-time slashing/bow/magic with (extremely linear) RPG stats behind 'em.
S.P.E.C.I.A.L. is just a better system all around (but then, I started my RPG career on AD&D 2E, so I like base stats that help define your character rather than just increase as time goes by), and Fallout's setting (as well as an actual roll-to-attack combat system in the form of V.A.T.S.) allows for much more dynamic, engaging combat. Tactical, even... as an RPG is supposed to be.

So yeah, Fallout by miles. I really tried, really wanted it to be (from Arena to Skyrim, every time)... but TES just isn't my cup of tea.
Also, if I get tired of first-and-third person 3D perspective... if I long for a turn-based tactical RPG with an overhead isometric view, Fallout can deliver on that too.

Fallout for me, for a few reasons. I had played Morrowind perhaps at too tender an age, and then Oblivion again I played while I was on an action game binge. One thing I will always recall about Oblivion is working my first job out of university and this ~45 y.o. coworker says to me 'You like games? Try Oblivion'. I'm thinking -- if this middle aged dude is plugging a game it must be serious.

But Fallout (and when I say Fallout I mean 3/NV, I'm part of the unwashed masses who've never played the originals) has a better mesh with the Bethesda game type in my opinion. Being primarily a shooter takesaway the combat complaints. Being futuristic allows great stuff like audio recordings and radio on your PIP boy. The soundtrack to FO3 is (perhaps I'm being a bit presumptuous here) iconic. Now I know some of the songs my grandparents used to hum because of a video game. I'd never have looked up The Ink Spots on my own. Whereas Ragnar the Red is merely a comedic little ditty I can't even remember the lyrics to, despite it being all of 3 verses long. I'm sure there are some lore lovers who really delve into each Elder Scrolls text they find, but the only reason I ever pick up books is to fill empty shelves in my multitude of houses. I think I've fully read 1, maybe 2 books in Skyrim. But in Fallout I get the recording playing and go about my business while some voice actor dictates the proceedings for me.

Fallout also has the luxury of a great spread of weapons. Energy, Explosive, Melee, Melee(fisticuffs), guns, big guns. The Elder Scrolls on the other hand get magic, which is nice, but aside from that you're stuck with melee or arrows.

For whatever reason, even as someone who typically reads Sword of Shannarah over Ender's Game, I prefer the futuristic wasteland to the medieval setting. I think it has to do with it being post apocalypse 1950's, so it leads me to believe I'm learning a little bit, and it's reminiscent of silver screen movies.

One thing I love Elder Scrolls games for is using the engine to do more than render brown/grey wastes and run down buildings. I love the wasteland, but those mod screens that came out recently show just how nicely Skyrim can portray nature.
