Neon Genesis Evangelion is a series I admire in what it did for the anime industry and introducing more people to anime, but my anime-non-fan brother punched me in the stomach for subjecting him to twelve hours of Evangelion when he was promised fighting robots on the box art.
I like Evangelion because it is open to so much interpretation, one of the few anime shows that reward overthinking. My brother on the other hand wanted to see fighting robots instead of emoting people so he punched me in the stomach for his trouble, just like Shinji gets punched in one of the early episodes.
It's hard to justify End of Evangelion sometimes, but when I went to see Avatar last night my brother didn't like that either because it "didn't meet his expectations". But is disappointment worth punching your brother in the stomach over End of Evangelion?
