I begrudingly like NGE and fully understand people who don't like it.

The first 14 or 16 episodes run like your usual mecha show only with a few emotional tanglements and from there it goes haywire. But as you're already invested you don't stop watching and when it ends you find yourself asking: "what the hell did I just watch?"

And then you want to punch people. (Though your brother is f-ed up for actually doing it.)

I never ever recommend this show to anyone as it is too much of a hit or miss case. I do shop around with RahXephon if people ask after a mecha show they should watch. And I add Gasaraki for the intellectual types.

I still haven't gotten around to watching Death and Rebirth...
You know why shops don't sell that one?
Shopkeepers get smacked in the face for carrying it.

Really, I like NGE and EoE (and don't understand what people find so confusing about the End-movie, if you just ignore the random images near the end the rest of the movie tells a perfectly simple story. Aside: Anno is still a douche for throwing up his hatemail in a movie, talk about nerd-rage). But I recommend you not to watch Death & Rebirth. Half of it is recap and the other half is alternate universe tripe. It doesn't tell anything new and it goes nowhere.

It did?. I found that what little respect I had for the industry (thanks mostly to FMA and Samurai Champloo) went away with NGE.
You do realise NGE is a good deal older than those titles, right?

Together with shows like Cowboy Bebop, Love Hina, Tenshi, Ah My Goddess and Ghost in the Shell (movie) it was part of the anime boom of the nineties. It's debatable if it opened up new genre's as there were many freaked out titles on the market already.

It doesn't matter what came first as that was not the point I was making. NGE could have come out 2 minutes ago or at the start of dark ages. It just isn't made from the same calibre as those of worthwhile titles.

I thought the film itself was more of a punch in the stomach, despite that I love the series.
Don't think you deserved the punch though.

I honestly cannot understand why so many people love Evangelion (the last few episodes were horrifically boring, lolwutpsychology), there are tons of series out there which are so vastly better, it boggles the mind.
So impending punch for you, sir.

Take Rahxephon for example, similar premise of big stompy robots yet AWESOME.

Your brother's an idiot.

That said, if people punch you for recommending them something you need to throw them down and kick them in the teeth so hard they swallow their whole front row.

The TV ending was like that because the budget ran out. End of Evangelion was, urgh, like a severe head trip through Hideaki Anno's mind when he was at his lowest (For those who didn't know, Evangelion was made by a depressed Anno). As an aside, Gurren Lagann (the polar opposite of Eva, in terms of mood, was made by the same studio.

Horrible series, practically invented emo. Shinji just whines like a girl the entire series, Mei is dysfunctional, and the only character that was likable was Asuka who was borderline psychotic.

If it wasnt for this series maybe we wouldn't have a genre of music dedicated to how kid hate their parents for working their asses off in 3 jobs to support them but didn't have the time to spoil the child.

He shouldn't punch you for watching the TV show Evangelion. However, I would understand it if he punched you for watching the movie. First time I saw it, my head was killing me for the rest of the day cause of being so messed up.

If you didn't like it after the first hour, why keep watching? It's not like one was chained to a chair clockwork orange style. That's like offering someone pie, they eat the whole thing, then attacking you for offering something they didn't enjoy, but continued to consume anyway.
I know, right? And what makes it worse is that he started watching it without me when I left the DVD in his room. Then he turns on me and says "This sucks, imma punch you for recommending this to me" - when he could have stopped watching at any moment!
You should make him watch Serial Experiments Lain.

That'll make him go Texas Chainsaw Massacre on your ass.
Better yet, he should make him watch Texhnolyze

The ending to Neon Genesis was crap, and that wasn't helped much by End of Evangelion (though Asuka had a huge moment of awesome). Still, it was a good series. The problem was that Evangelion couldn't really decide what it wanted to be, robo series or psychological drama. IMO the ending had too much of the latter to make it a fitting and well balanced series. It's why the ending came for me as a bit of a downer after a series that had told its story very well.
Still, no punching people for recommending things you don't like. Though I must say I had an urge to do it to a friend who had me watching Godannar... Curse him.

I've only seen two of the films and a few of the episodes and never really got into it, but I guess if I had nothing better to do I'd sit through the whole thing and give it a second chance. I'd much rather watch One Piece for the pirates and jiggling chesticles though.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a series I admire in what it did for the anime industry and introducing more people to anime, but my anime-non-fan brother punched me in the stomach for subjecting him to twelve hours of Evangelion when he was promised fighting robots on the box art.

I like Evangelion because it is open to so much interpretation, one of the few anime shows that reward overthinking. My brother on the other hand wanted to see fighting robots instead of emoting people so he punched me in the stomach for his trouble, just like Shinji gets punched in one of the early episodes.

It's hard to justify End of Evangelion sometimes, but when I went to see Avatar last night my brother didn't like that either because it "didn't meet his expectations". But is disappointment worth punching your brother in the stomach over End of Evangelion?
I thought NGE was utter garbage, a typically silly robot-fight amine with ridiculous dialogue and lame, sloppily-written existentialist pretensions. I'm all for esoteric-and-meaningful but do it right. I can sit though hours of emotional scenes if written well, but NGE is not written well.

I wouldn't punch you in the stomach though. I'd just make you watch Mulholland Drive over and over and refuse to explain any of it to you.

Evangelion was good, but if I'd gone in expecting giant robots battling it out on a consistent basis I'd probably slug whoever had recommended it. End of Evangelion manages to make a little more sense than the last two episodes of the series, but just barely.

Maybe he be uncomfortable with liking it, or maybe he just be liking to punch. Is this a common thing?
He didn't like Genshiken either, he punched me after that as well.
Well, that depends. Did he read the comic or watch the anime?

Because I thought the anime was crap compaired to the fabulous comic.

NGE is fsking brilliant.

The subsequent movies, however, were/are NOT.

Still looking forward to the live action one, tho...

I mean, I didn't see it but...it's gotta be better than that Dragonball one was, right?
....right?

No, I actually quite liked Evangelion. A lot, in fact; if anything, I'd be the one recommending it, though I'd add a disclaimer considering how much flame it starts (just look at this very thread).

Edit:

I can smell anime viewers. You all reek of Pockey and B.O., and it does in fact create an irresistible urge to inflict grievous bodily harm. So yeah, I'm gonna have to go with you'd get punched as soon as I met you.
Ah, the obligatory "anime/anime fans suck" comment. I not only want to punch you guys, I want to hit you with sharp, heavy objects.

Also, I don't think most anime fans here eat Pocky, I know I never bothered.

I don't have anything against Pocky, I just never really wanted to try it. As for Caplico...

Somewhat more interesting, but I don't really want to try that either.

The post was more about my hatred for the "anime sucks" posters. So much burning hatred...
