I'm not relgious in any way, but the Norse had the right idea. Ragnarok (Teatime of the gods), a war so big that it destroys the entire world except for the tree of Life and a pair of humans. Gods and Heroes on one side, Giants and villans on the other. Moon being eaten by the wolf. Kraken rising. World serpent, a snake so big it encircles the girth of the world, comes onto land. All preceeded by a winter lasting three years, one of unnatural acts (Incest, etc), one of swords, and the final one of Wolves.
