Poll: English dubs for anime: good or bad?

The last time I went to the US, the anime I watched were horribly dubbed. I honestly preferred watching the Japanese version. the opening sequences were way better and don't have these "gimmicky" songs or openings. In the dubbed version, they pronounce Japanese words differently. Now why do they dub them like this? Is it better to watch them with subs or dubbed? (this is my opinion about the topic. If you like dubs, don't take it against me I am just asking about what you're opinion is on dubs)

Agreed. I normally watch half of every series I watch in English and then half of it in Japanese so that I can compare the two. I got through one episode of Higurashi and had to stop. The dub for that series was lethal. On the other hand, there are occasionally some rather good ones, such as the dub for Death Note or Dokkoida.

Dubs are alright in showing the anime to more people.

If its done well and they translation is very good, then dubbing is fine, but if they continually go "Believe it" constantly, it can be bad.

Some are good.Some are bad.Like Elfen Lied is well dubbed while some other random anime i watched once was horribly dubbed.

On youtube I saw 2 clips. that's all it took.
one of Rika saying "Ni-Pah!" in English, the other of Rika and Hanyuu conversing.
it was soul destroying.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6503-Anime-Review-Higurashi-When-They-Cry]. second season, same title, ends with Kai, third ends with Rei. if you can call it a season.
then there is a Second Series, Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I prefer Higurashi.

I personally sub them, but the dubs in the big-name ones (Spirited Away, for example) are OK.

I prefer subbed, as sometimes the lines get changed in the english version. For example, I recently started watching Dragon Ball in Japanese, and wow are there some diffences. That said, if it's a good dub I'll watch it, usually when I'm cooking, 'cause using a knife when reading subs is a quick way to start bleeding.

This i agree with, i also found the dubbing for Full Metal Alchemist was the best i've heard...One Piece was horrible. If i'm honest i dont really know any of the more obscure anime titles out there.

Like with movies subtitles are just fine for me. I don't need dubs (Dragonball!) or remakes ([REC] into Quarantine and Das Experiment in The Experiment for instance).

Since it's anime. . what's the difference? The mouth is going to move in it's jittery stop-start motion anyway so who cares whether it's been dubbed or not. It makes no difference because the mouth moves the exact same way regardless of the sounds being produced by the character. The few times I have had the misfortune to watch an anime, I actually enjoyed the subtitles. It's almost like watching a written version of MST3K.

I almost never watch dubs, but yeah the Fullmetal Alchemist dub was excellent, so there's hope
Oh wait I like watching Excel Saga dubbed, just because it's supposed to sound cheesey and rediculous

I lack the attention span to read the subs all the time, especially I usually lie on my side while watching them. So good dubs I appreciate.

Naruto´s english voice acting and translations are utterly and completly HORRIBLE. same goes with most others.

only Dragon Ball had better english voices than the japanese, because Goku sounded like the Angry German Kid on helium.

i prefer japanese with english subs, because there i can atleast ignore them when they are wrong.
