[I reckon you should still play it. I'm arachnophobic and I'll still give it a shot. I can't even put up with a daddy long-legs in my room, but I reckon the spiders in Skyrim just don't move or behave like spiders do. Granted we've only seens snippet of them, but I still won't stop it from playing a game.

. . . Except for Resident Evil 2. The giant tarantula in that game that burst when you shot it to release hundreds of little spiders? FUCK. THAT. SHIT.
Funny thing, I leave daddy longlegs and huntman alone, DLL can't break your skin with their fangs so they can't poison you and Huntsmans dont have venom, but they kill household pests like mites and cockroaches. Just be sure to scare the DLL's out of their webs occasionally to vacuum them up and you will actually have a more healthy houshold because of it.
I'm just saying of course, I realise most people wouldn't like this.

im an arachnophobic and yet i still play as many games with giant spiders for one simple reason, i get to kill them and nothing sooths a fear better than unleashing a fantasy equivelent of a tac-nuke on it. also: SKYRIM FTW!

Spiders do in many cases work well in games, but they are vastly overused.
And especially in mythological games. It isnt just recently, i remember
seeing spiders or spiderlike creatures in alot of games all the way back
to the 80s.

They need a break, but i tell you, Giant Amoebas should not be standing in!

I won't be getting Skyrim cause I'm arachnophobic and there's fucking massive spiders in it. That's seriously my reason, and it really pisses me off.

But the Diablo ones never bothered me, so I guess I'm lucky in that regard.
There will be a mod within the first week that will remove them from the game. Guaranteed.

Don't really have a problem with them, or notice them in games for that matter.
Although Minecraft spiders scare the shit out of me.
Probably won't be available for 360 though :p
The perfect opportunity for you to join your PC gaming brethren! ;)

Spiders in games can freak me out, but in a good way, kind of the same way you enjoy the scares in games like Amnesia.

Spiders do seem to be a staple tier of enemies in games. But for some reason I haven't noticed a sudden influx of them recently.

Also I'm lucky my arachnophobia doesn't affect me in games.

I love giant spiders(not really)
As far as I know they are not being overused with only game to have them recently is minecraft and Skyrim will have them too.
In fact Skyrim would be featuring spiders after a long time considering both morrowind and oblivion had none. (mecha does not count)

The problem is, I can't tell what's gonna distrub/frighten me and what isn't. For instance, like I said the Diablo ones didn't get to me at all. However, in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the Skulltulas scared the shit out of me. Weirder still, the fucking massive spider boss in the same game didn't bother me at all. I only saw about a second of spider in the Skyrim trailer, and the eyes creeped me the hell out.

Still, I'll play it at a friend's or something to see if it's bad.

I usually get something on the 360 if the option's there, but I think I might go for PC this time around. I have enough 360 games anyway, and I do feel like I'm missing out on the mod scene...

To the OP and any others who are scared of spiders in games: is it just spiders? Or, say, do Radscorpions in Fallout scare you as well? I have to say, I always thought Radscorpions were creepy enemies, they make a really weird sound when attacking. Just curious as to whether it's specifically spiders, or if other arachnids and giant insects are included.

For me, it is just spiders. I kinda like scorpions. However, Radscorpions are mildly creepy, but only cause of the eyes.

Only minecraft has me scared of in game spiders (Im scared of real life spiders) But then again, minecraft is the only thing media wise (thats games and movies) o physically scare me the way it does. I took like an hour to drop down into a cave I found, cause I was too scared to check.

I have a mild fear of spiders, no phobia or anything. That's probably why I enjoy games with spider-like creatures in it. A little fear can make a game more fun, like coming over a ridge in Fallout 3 and end up right in front of a Giant Radscorpion. Whaaaah! And then the satisfaction of unloading a shotgun in its face.

Seriously, you're a complete wuss if you're terrified of PIXELS!

Sorry for the harsh truth, but do not fear I will give you some advice my dad gave me...

"Toughen up, or would you rather me go get you your Princess dress?"
^This guy probably hasn't played Amnesia.

Then again, I don't get why people are so afraid of spiders. I'm careful around them, sure, but not enough to be scared. They're not exactly hard to kill.

And they're cute, too ^^

Oh, and they make your thumb look badass.

Spiders appear common in many games because they are an enemy that is both easy to see as being a threat, but with enough player knowledge of their real world features that they can be put in the beginnings of games as a sort of stepping stone towards more fantastically defined creatures built for the slaying. If you define your protagonist's capabilities with a real world barometer (i.e. I know how much it takes to kill a spider of this size, so proportionally I'm pretty sure how much it would take to kill this giant spider), its a good indication of how far the player needs to progress to attain any worthwhile strength. I'm sure a person with a fear of rats would find similar discomfort in many games.

I considered posting the picture of the giant spider here, but then I remembered that I'm not that evil.

It's a shame that you're going to miss out on what looks to be an awesome game just because you don't like spiders. You should really learn to overcome your fears.

i think the amount of spiders in games is more or less constant.
of course if you really are afraid of spiders you will notice every single one while i just rip them to shreds with the rest of the enemies.
concerning skyrim if you wanted to get get in on PC(although is may also apply to consoles if they manage to get mods on those) you can still hope that somebody mods the game arachnophobia friendly and cuts out all the spider.

even the diablo 2 spiders (which barely even look like spiders) scare me so much that i need to be with a group of people in order to keep from freaking out.
Kind of off-topic, but that's a pretty interesting personality trait. "I can take on Kel'Thuzad, ruler of the nine wastes, with both hands tied behind my ba- oh GOD a spider, it's the size of my whole body!! Get it away, help needed over here!!" In the right game, I can see your guildmates (or whatever) rallying to help you whenever giant spiders are involved.

has anyone else had their fear of something specific, prevent them from playing a game, or am i just a massive wimp...or both?
Urk...
Just thinking about it is giving me the creeps, but I have an irrational fear of not spiders, but fish. Living fish, that is, I don't mind dead fish as much, especially without their heads. Maybe that's part of why I enjoy seafood so much... I can savour every part of them being dead and never bothering me again. Mmmm, revenge. My other fear is deep, dark water, which is much harder to combat.

It depends on the game, because in bright, colourful games like WoW, I can handle fish (is it because I can always insta-kill them if they get too close?) and swimming is actually rather fun; but then you have games like Shadow of the Colossus. I swear the scariest part of that game is crossing the river to get to the ruins that house #8, because there are huge fish in the water. Apparantly you can grab on to them and get a little ride while they swim around... I'll never try it myself, I'm actually feeling sick at the prospect.

I feel your pain. I too get unnerved every time I have to fight spiders in a game. The only game I haven't been able to play because of it though is Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Props to them on their spider design, but I wasn't too happy when I saw one.

I'm scared of the dark but I still love to play games where you spend all your time in the dark, the reason I play games is to be able to do stuff I couldn't do in real life, even walk down a dark alley and that is the reason I always play as a rogue in roleplaying games.

I don't think there's been MORE spiders now than there used to be though. The spider design is this quintessential monster design that shows up in everything with monsters, all the time.

Arachnophobia is an extremely common phobia, so what better way to give your monster some guarantee of frightening people than to base it's design on one of the most feared animals on earth?
