So, as a gaming community, Escapist is tied to Japan. After all, two out of three dominant consoles come from this country's corporations (Sony & Nintendo), and a lot of games come from there. Consequently, there is a subset of Escapists who love Japan. But... Has anyone of them actually been there? Review of my own visit to Japan... Will wait until I will get some answers.

Nope... and it's annoying.

My sister, curse her, went to the Ghibli Museum... and spent about six hours on facebook bragging about it... *****! I love her really.

That and several of my friends have been there too... repeatedly.

Oh, I would love to go as well, but I would need to take half a year of vacation beforehand to learn some Japanese.

Because the way I figure it it is probably really hard to get around in the country without the language. (Once you leave the big cities that is. I for one am more interested in the countryside than the huge places)

I WANT TO GO SOOOO BAD!!! *sigh* I wish I could go. I made it a goal in my life to go AT LEAST once. But you do know that Japan is behind in the gaming industry, right? The games they do make that are worthwhile I really like, plus I really like anime :3

Yep, went there christmas 09. Stayed until well in January, best part was probably standing there with thousands of people on Shibuya Crossing celebrating the New Year :3

Even in the cities it's already hard, almost nobody speaks a word of English. :p Only people in public service jobs can sometimes provide useful information.

At least all the train signs and such are also in English...

No, but how cool would it be to go? It's up there on my top 5 places to visit list:
Italy
Japan
Egypt (again)
Brazil
The Antartic.

I stopped for a visit in Tokyo on my way to Australia, it was the best place I've ever been to. Shibuya Crossing, gyoza, manga, tall buildings, and extremely polite people. I can't wait to go back, preferably for a few months, if not more.

Yes, I've been there. It was pretty much exactly what I expected.

I lived with a family for about ten days. Got to experience quite a lot in that short time.

Overall it was the best ten days of my life.

You will never be looked upon as an equal.
I went there on a business trip. Some of the software my team developed for a Japanese company didn't work as it should. I've been around the world. Latvia, Norway, Germany, Israel, Russia, South Africa, UK, Spain, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Ireland, Chile, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand... Never I felt so out of place. I felt like an actor on a freak show. Children were pointing at me. What kind of country is that? Made me remember with whom they allied during WW2, it did. I was out of the tourist lanes, mind you.
Never want to see this country again.

PS: I am of course talking from a point of view of a white, 2 m, 110 kg male perspective. I was quite noticeable.

The Japanese don't even accept ethnic Japanese people born and raised outside of Japan as "truly Japanese" equals.

I don't think I would particularly enjoy Japan. Far too xenophobic and far too socially conservative for me, plus the whole language barrier.

OP do yourself a favor and don't go.
They treat foreigners like shit even if you are ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR.
They only way they will treat you if any repsect is if your on R&R from Anders Airbase, Okinawa and you're are wearing your uniform or your service beret.
Or if you're a celebrity.
Or if you're a super rich buisness man looking to invest.
