Nope. I haven't even been outside Scandinavia. It would be fun to visit Japan someday though.

No, and I never will. Because they're racist. And they hate white people. And their culture is really annoying.

I hope that's sarcasm.
It is right?
I'm not good at detecting it.

If by "been to" you mean in Narita airport for about a grand total of nine hours, yes.

I do intend to have a full visit there, though. Sometime after my other places to go (Germany, China, U.K., Taiwan again).

If life has taught me one thing: all cities are just cities no matter what language they use. Tokyo should be a breeze.

I will go there someday, mark my words. Whether it's for work or for pleasure I will find a way to get to Japan, and then... I shall go to Akihabara. I hear that place is like some kind of gamer heaven.

Yes, in fact I was born there (father studied there and took my mother there to live for a while). I left before I was 2 I think but I returned after my 20th birthday. It truly is a crazy and amazing place.

On a side note if someone could ever find a link to a study of how many caucasians are born in Japan that would be helpful because I've been trying to google it for a while with no luck.

If you're talking about the pop culture, you could make that argument for just about any nation.

Can't argue with the rest of your reasoning though since I've never been personally and have only heard this through a Japanese history class and people who've been there.

No and to be honest, whilst some elements seem cool, I can't help but think "another crowded place where people will be people, which means I'll hate them".

It's not sarcasm. And the intensely racist and xenophobic culture is well documented.

No, and I'd like to, but there's other places I'd like to go to as well. Luckily, I get to travel a lot, and so have been to many places already.

was stationed there for about a year and a half during my brief time in the navy. It was....interesting to say the least. They are incredibly obsessed with american culture, but at the same time, they don't seem to "get it". What do I mean? Okay, imagine 3 young adult males driving around in a "pimped out" car, trying to be "gangsta", and if they weren't in said car, you could see them walking around with their pants around their knees. All of this is fine and all, but it's the fact that they're playing Justin Bieber that just confuses me.

Other than that, the ones who aren't obsessed with us, seem to just be incredibly xenophobic and outright racist. I'd say if you want to go there, do it, as it is an interesting place, but don't do anything stupid like moving there, or going on vacation there for an extended period of time. Yea, it has a very unique feel at times, but it isn't as different from the US as you're probably hoping, and while the people there are very nice to each other, and foreigners wearing miltary unifroms, they tend to act snobby to everyone else.

Oh, and going ANYWHERE not knowing the native language, atleast a little, is just not a good idea.

No, but I'd like to go, though I'd most likely be avoiding larger cities and take a look around the country side. I know someone who has been for a guided tour.

But... Has anyone of them actually been there? Review of my own visit to Japan... Will wait until I will get some answers.
Been twice - absolutely incredible. I was told to expect a culture shock, but what I didn't expect was a culture smash to the face. Both times I went to Tokyo, but the second time I spent some time in Kyoto as well. First time I was only *just* 18 and it was my first holiday alone so I was a little timid, second time was last year and I was a bit more outgoing so probably had a bit more fun. Some things that stand out in memory:

- Both times I came back with a shit load of Hentai. It wasn't aggressively in your face, but I found Japan (Tokyo especially) be be super sexual in a lot of ways, and I totally bought into this. Porn and sex shops, huzzah!

- Alcohol is ****ing expensive. First time I went it was 250yen/£1, so the country was actually dirt cheap to be in - beer was still pricy. Second time it was 120yen/£1 and everything suddenly became expensive as all hell, going out especially so. £10 a pint? Ewww. I love the bars, though.

- Food was (by and large) terrible. I ate some delicious stuff, but that was the rarity - in Tokyo if an eatery looked even a little like a commercial chain I found it served shit, and I'm not a fussy eater. I thought maybe I was doing it wrong the first time, but second time I didn't enjoy eating any more than the first. Sushi is awesome though, obviously.

- Oh my God the rail travel is so good. The first time I went on a Shinkansen it was so much better than the British rail system I literally shit myself. So much room, so comfortable, so punctual. Even the prices compare favourably - on the second expensive time it was only about £80 - 100 or so to get a ticket from Tokyo - Kyoto on the day. If I tried to buy a ticket to London tomorrow it'd cost the same and I'd have to go through Doncaster.

-Everyone is lovely as all hell. I dunno if it's cultural and they actually hate me, but none of it seemed fake and I don't think I've been too a friendlier place than Japan. The football fans are mental, though (which is also good!).

As an interesting aside I actually went to Fukushima the first time for a day - picked it as a location at random just because we wanted to ride the bullet trains and it had the funniest sounding name. It's probably one of the most boring places I've been too, and good god it became a struggle not speaking Japanese having left major cosmopolitan areas.

In short... I love Japan! Now it's your turn! :D

I've read about the xenophobia too, and I was actually pretty worried about it the first time I went. Like I said, I'm not 100% sure that everyone I talked too didn't hate me (in fact being an English tourist I'm almost certain a lot did!), but not one showed it. I'd especially expect trouble if I'm no the streets wasted at night in some of the dodgier areas, but I didn't encounter any at all.
