I personally have and very recently, I was assigned to do a 500-1000 word fairy tale for my English class. I was drawing a blank so I decided to rip off the most recent game I beat Final Fantasy XIII with a few references to other games as well.

Here my question fellow Escapists have you every ripped off a video game for a short story?

Nope, I've never plagiarized a video game for a story. I did have an assignment in a class to write about a video game, though. That was a fun assignment- would that I could get credits more often for writing about emotional connections and heroism in Kirby.

I've used elements for video game plots when I write up stories for when I DM a game of D&D or Dark Heresy, but never for anything I would have to submit for school, that kind of thing teachers actually check for in college.

I wrote the Starcraft origins story (more or less) that you find in the manual, about how the terrans got to space and how the zerg were made etc for my english exam junior high (or 10th grade). Got a B.

Back when I was about 13, I ripped off the story of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and used it to write a short story that got published in the Neopian Times. That is, the "online newspaper" for Neopets.com. I was quite proud at the time. Now I wonder what the hell they were smoking.

Not exactly ripped off, but in highschool a lot of my fictional pieces were homages/based in dystopian worlds like Fallout and Half-Life 2. But it's more of an inspiration, rather than stealing it's idea, like I once had to write a piece of dialogue, it was an interrogation by overwatch of the NPC in Half life 2 who holds a door, to stall the Metro cops so Freeman can get away at the start of the game.

Yes, Once for English I told the story of F.E.A.R. Got an A.

Calumon: I don't write, except for that blog.

I wrote what was essentially a Megaman fan fiction back in grade 8 or 9. The only lose connection was that it took place in the X universe. It was essentially a group of humans trying to survive using broken pieces of reploids as weapons and armor.

I recall getting a good grade on it, a B i think.

I recall once ripping off, of all things, the original Half-Life. Featuring the crowbar. I think it was for school, but it was quite a while ago.

I can't recall ripping off another story -- be it game or otherwise... then again my memory is pretty awful. However, I highly doubt I ever did as I'm usually too honest with myself and couldn't live with doing so. Hard to explain... and I don't blame anyone for doing so either. I just personally can't do it myself.

So my answer is no, I suppose.

I ripped off an idea from an old FMV game called Rama for a story I wrote in eighth grade...not sure if it's a ripoff (I just took the ideas of machines that required calculations in octodecimal and hexadecimal number systems), but still.

I wish I'd published that story, though, since I might have been able to score settlement money off the people who made Lost...at least if it turns out aliens are behind the whole thing.

Not that I recall and certainly not purposefully. Though I'm sure I borrowed [a href=http://www.tvtropes.org]tropes[/a] heavily from many of the adventure games I loved.

That's right I linked it. You enjoy the black hole.

kaven-recognizable protagonist versus super-sadist-villain in caves

ok, ok, its better than THAT...

to tell you the truth, no, because really see what mr.grey said.

In grade 4 I ripped off the detective story of a flash game called A Case of the Crabs No, it had nothing to do with pubic lice. I didn't even make that connection until just now. (Ah the innocence of childhood)

I didn't even steal the whole thing. Just the first half. Everything after that was my own creation.

I got an A.

Nope, I've never felt compelled to include/steal things wholesale from video games in my writing. For one, most video games have terrible stories so that strikes me like digging through a landfill in the off chance that someone threw away a priceless Faberge egg, and frankly I'm too creative to need that material in the first place.

I have a lot of influences certainly, but video games are a minute portion if any.

I do have a tendency to extensively build upon the fiction found in a game, often branching out into elaborate cross-over mash-up universes... but since I never write any of that down I have not composed fan-fiction and thus have committed no sins against canon (seriously, I don't read any fan-fiction even if everyone says it's extremely well done, just because it won't be canonical). I'm something of a stickler for canon.

Yeah, in creative writing in 9th grade I transformed the entire opening sequence of Resident Evil 2 into a fictional character development story(it was just on character development, so really didn't need to end it) and got an A, plus a spot in the 2003 Artist book for that year from the school. (full of submitted and teacher submitted pieces of literature and art) Only my best buddy got the reference and we shat paint with laughter.
