Of course I'm meaning not a blatant rip-off more of take a small story element then infuse it with your own ideas.

My family's church once decided to have everyone write meaningful parables or whatever to put in a book that they would hand out. I used Arthas from Warcraft III. I didn't even try to pretend it was my own story and I still got compliments for it.

Well, I wrote a scary short story back in grade... 6? 9? One of the two. Anyway, It wasn't really a rip-off, but it was inspired by Eternal Darkness. Kind of. Mostly just the book.

I wrote a story quite directly based on Ratchet & Clank Going Commando, several years ago.
I received praise for my imagination...

I don't think so. After a point I had so many of my own ideas buzzing around that I never needed to rip anything off. Never got a chance to use most of them, as creative writing was sadly an extreme minority of the various types of essays we wrote in high school, as well as college (so far)

Don't know if it counts, but I used the Seal of Rassilon as a company logo in my Game Production class.

I've never really ripped off a game plot, though. Certainly written the extension of the plot in the form of fan fiction, but never had to steal the story.

Indeed, I once wrote an awesome story based on God of War. I got an A. :D
I've used games in text's several times though, but never actually ripped it totally off.

For my HSC (Australia's University entrance and final exams) I had to write peice of creative writing in under 40 minutes. So instead of using my brain, i ripped off the story from the "Clannad" video game, pretty much without any alteration. Nobody knows of this game except for anime fans and japanese nerds, so i got away with it :D
Passed my exams with high results.

Why would you rip off a video game plot for a writing assignment. Not only is that dull but you're likely to get caught.

Maybe I just preferred using my own premises, but I always found it more interesting to come up with my own ideas.

I once used Metrpoid for a story, something about Samus blowing up Mother Brain...

I think I used Spyro for a story once. Christ that was weird...

I wrote a story for the quest "The Power of Atom" in Fallout 3 for a grade.
I made it clear that it was from a game and I was just writing what I would have done in that postition.

Ohh most definitely, did this all the time for short stories in school, never a direct rip off, just used settings and certain elements from it to do so, hell I did a Killzone battle scene thing for my English Language GCSE and ended up with an A*. Heh there was another kid that did Metroid but in all seriousness Space Pirates just sounds tooootally moronic on paper.

"Ripped off?" Absolutely not. Gathered inspiration that got me my own ideas? Absolutely. But i'd consider that something that is only natural. Emulation and plagarism are not the same thing. That's what I think anyway.

Aww Yes. I ripped off Soul Calibur for an English short story. Not like, reference it. Just blatantly rip it off. I did have an original story though, just the characters were the same. And to make it worse, I then posted it on FanFiction.net. What the hell was I sniffing?

You mean Barney? That's Barney.[/hopelessly nerdy]

Using game stories as inspiration is a great idea, wish I'd thought of it for my creative writing courses. Oh well, I enjoyed getting into the story that I ultimately wrote anyway.
